POPSHealthy Monday: Canada Joins Meatless Monday Movement Could this happen here in the biggest meat consuming countries in the world? Don’t we care enough about our health to cut meat out of our diets at least one day a week? Most of our health costs stem from eating red meat. Most of our food costs stem from feeding cattle. Doesn’t it make economic as well as heatlh sense to cut down on our red meat consumption? Red meat again linked to cancer risk: http://www.foodnavigator.com/Science-Nutrition/Red-meat-again-linked-to-cancer-risk-Study How to reduce your red meat consumption: http://www.causecast.org/news_items/8699-how-to-reduce-your-red-meat-consumption The growing case against red meat: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1887266,00.html

POPSVintage Rio These pictures came into my possession by way of a friend whose father came to Brazil as a missionary in the mid 1930's. They come from postcards he gathered while in Rio. I have others from the city of Belem, as well as pictures he took of the region where I live, but these shots of Rio in the '30s are spectacular.

POPSNew row over Colombia-US accord Venezuela has broken off diplomatic relations with Bogota and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has warned that Colombian military bases could be used by the US to attack his country. Other countries in the region, including Brazil and Chile, have also expressed concern. The BBC's Jeremy McDermott, in Colombia, says Colombia is increasingly isolated in the region, but does not seem to care, just so long as it has US support.

POPSHonduras leader could be restored The military grabbed him from his home at dawn and deported him to Costa Rica. He sneaked back into the country Sept. 21 and took refuge in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa, where he has remained, the compound surrounded by Honduran troops. Zelaya's removal from office has been viewed worldwide as one of the most serious challenges to face Latin America in a decade. The coup was both a throwback to the region's dark past of civil war and military takeover and emblematic of a struggle underway today in Central and South America, where several leftist leaders with authoritarian tendencies have risen to power through elections and tested the bounds of democracy.

POPSConvert The UN Building Into NYC Homeless Shelter
wallowing in desperate poverty, with crime so rampant and violent that the police won’t even venture into them. And you have the nerve to come here and investigate us ? The United Nations has become nothing less than a shabby podium used by corrupt third-world demagogues to do what they could never do in any other way - attempt to destroy and bring into disrepute the United States. We’re being nibbled to death by ducks. And we’re letting it happen. Not only that, we’re paying for it. I’d like to see the Obama Administration tell the U.N. to pound sand (but they won’t). Take your investigation to somewhere that needs it, and that list is endless. North Korea, Darfur, Tibet, Cuba….I could go on almost ad infinitum about third world hell holes where people have no rights whatsoever, where food is something that may or may not come your way today - or tomorrow. Where “housing” consists of whatever you can scrape together to try to keep out the cold, where women . .

POPSBites of passage Over the course of the past two or three decades, however, the Asian tiger mosquito has become considerably, prodigiously more mobile. It has circled the planet, emerging in Trinidad in 1983; Mexico in 1988; France in 1999; Cameroon in 2000; Nicaragua, Greece, Israel and Switzerland in 2003. It has colonised North and South America, Africa, and Europe, until it has become a great nuisance in Brazil, Albania, Nigeria, Mexico and Italy – “the most invasive mosquito in the world”, a team of researchers wrote in 2007, in the journal Vector-Borne Zoonotic Disease. The mosquito from the Southeast Asian jungle is also now a great nuisance in Trenton, New Jersey – the greatest present-day mosquito nuisance in a wetland state whose history is written in waves of mosquito infestation.
