POPSConvention Overkill Jack Shafer of Slate, whose Press Box column I never miss, argues that the conventions are covered way too much. As we wrote last week (and Shafer mentioned us, so he gets bonus points), some news organizations go all out, even as they're budgets are breaking: http://www.forbes.com/media/2008/08/12/newspapers-media-conventions-biz-media-bw_jz_0812newsbiz.html

POPSHow To Stop Putin What we can do is alter Putin's cost-benefit calculations. We are not without resources. There are a range of measures to be deployed if Russia does not live up to its cease-fire commitments: 1. Suspend the NATO-Russia Council established in 2002 2. Bar Russian entry to the World Trade Organization. 3. Dissolve the G-8. Putin's dictatorship long made Russia's presence in this group of industrial democracies a farce, but no one wanted to upset the bear by expelling it. No need to. The seven democracies simply withdraw. (And if Italy's Silvio Berlusconi, who has been sympathetic to Putin's Georgia adventure, wants to stay, he can have an annual G-2 dinner with Putin.) Then immediately announce the reconstitution of the original G-7. 4. Announce a U.S.-European boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi. The most crucial and unconditional measure, however, is this: Reaffirm support for the Saakashvili government:

POPS Answering Russia 10. Announce the creation of a new information network, much larger and better funded than Voice of America or Radio Free Europe to deliver Internet, TV and radio broadcasts into neo-Soviet Russia so that Russians can learn the truth about their country.

POPSO'Reilly is Just So....Funny! I never had seen this until someone posted it on youtube the other day. I don't watch Bill very much, once in a while I catch his shows and find him to be seriously funny, yet somehow also think he is sad and pathetic, since he seems to actually BELIEVE the crap he is saying. But here he is in yet another humorous yet pitiful moment! Enjoy!

POPSU.S. Position Complicates Global Effort to Curb Illicit Arms Ever see the Nicolas Cage flick ‘Lord of War’? At the very end, when his character has been caught after years of dealing weapons to anyone who could pay, he is given a ‘get out of jail’ card by a shadowy US military officer, and told he was ‘allowed’ to do what he did because it helped further US imperial aims. At the end, just before the credits was a list of who is selling what to whom. The US leads the world in the illicit arms trade. And the US will do nothing that will endanger the profits from these transactions. No matter who dies as a result.

POPSCalls for Boycott of San Diego Hotelier It seems to me that Manchester's allowing his "Catholic faith" to turn him into a bad businessman. After all, more marriages = more honeymoons = more money spent at hotels. Besides, his Catholic faith requires a Catholic wedding -- does this mean he'd spend money to outlaw any wedding that wasn't Catholic? In the end, it's just spin to excuse his bigotry.

POPSNew fears of Anglican schism over homosexuality About 280 bishops and 750 lay people, including bishops' spouses, are expected to meet in Jerusalem from June 22 to 29 for what they are calling the "Global Anglican Future Conference," organizers said. They include a majority of the bishops from Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and parts of Tanzania, who plan to boycott the Lambeth Conference this year. The rest of those at the Jerusalem Conference are from England, the United States, Australia and some countries in Asia and Latin America.

POPSOr Maybe it WAS just a scarf! Sunk to new lows... Then again, if you are really rejected from Dunkin' Doughnuts by Rachel Ray in a scarf, then maybe you are just that stupid

POPSTerrorist Racheal: America's Crisis Continues! First, the news came out that Food Network's Racheal Ray was a terrorist , wearing a keffiyeh around her neck to show her solidarity with Palestinian terr'ists -- in a Dunkin' Donuts ad. Yikes! Then Michelle Malkin announced she was considering a donut boycott. Now, Dunkin' Donuts is covering up for Racheal's sympathy for evildoers. But sharp wingnut Jon at Exurban League isn't buying it:

POPSPhotographic Proof of Rachael Ray's Terrorism Wonkette has the photo that has the right wing blogosphere reaching for their tinfoil hats . Wingnut Michelle Malkin is apparently considering a boycott. Have you ever seen Shelly Malkin? She's like three feet tall and weighs ten pounds with her shoes on. It's hard to see how she could possibly be eating enough donuts for Dunkin' Donuts to care if she quits. On the bright side, at least the wingnuts aren't freaking out of anything that matters one way or another. Let them waste their time with BS like this and maybe they won't have time to actually try to screw up America.

POPSA REAL Issue.... Where have all the US Jobs gone? And where will they continue to go until we wake up and smell the coffee? While we have become so distracted by some trivial and not so trivial issues, our economy and prosperity has been given away to the Chinese. We are IN DEBT to them, and they manufacture goods WE USED TO MAKE. Pretty soon, when we say NO to China they won't listen because they won't need to. We have given away all of our economic power.
