POPSBloomberg calls for a new New Deal A great piece by Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg. I think this man is one of the country's greatest assets - i sure hope we find a way to empower him. He has, in my opinion, been a great mayor for new york city.

POPSThe True Cost of Rewarding Greedy Bankers Note the names of some of these great institutions that rewarded greed. Note the immediate cost to UK taxpayers. I would be interested to see figures relating to the taxes of US citizens' tax bills compares. (Oh, meanwhile, Barclays in London have just guaranteed 2.5 billion dollars in bonuses and salaries to a firm called Lehmans that they just bought a bit of.)

POPSMonsanto to Charge as Much as 42% More for New Seeds "Despite 20 years of research and 13 years of commercialization, genetic engineering has failed to significantly increase US crop yields." Still Monsanto is going to claim yet a bigger piece of the non-existent pie. What greedy bastards. GM Fails To Boost Crop Yields

POPSSinister Plot To Bilk U.S. Taxpayers a $7.4 Trillion Success! It should be noted that the amount of money pledged is equivalent to $24,000 for every man, woman and child in the country. It’s nine times what the U.S. has spent so far on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Congressional Budget Office figures. It could pay off more than half the country’s mortgages.

POPSRepublican War Hero - "Bush Administration Are Losers" More: He would be open to the idea of either working in a Democratic administration or even running as the vice presidential nominee on a Democratic ticket -- though, he conceded, "I probably won't have to worry about it" because he's unlikely to be asked. "If there was an area that I thought I could make a difference and influence policy, leadership, outcome ... then I would entertain" those possibilities, Hagel said. He called Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton "capable." As for the speculation that he and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg might form an independent ticket, Hagel joked that "Bloomberg's got the money. I think it'd be Bloomberg-Hagel" ticket.

POPSBush loses ground with military families From the article: "I don't see gains for the people of Iraq . . . and, oh, my God, so many wonderful young people, and these are the ones who felt they were really doing something, that's why they signed up," said poll respondent Sue Datta, 61, whose youngest son, an Army staff sergeant, was seriously wounded in Iraq last year and is scheduled to redeploy in 2009. "I pray to God that they did not die in vain, but I don't think our president is even sensitive at all to what it's like to have a child serving over there."

POPSFollow The Money - Republican Execs Going Democratic Jeffrey Volk, a managing director at Citigroup in New York, says he grew disenchanted with Republicans after the federal government failed to provide more help to the Gulf region after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He says he's supporting Clinton. It was absolutely inconceivable to me that after 9/11 another catastrophe could hit a major American city, and the United States government was not prepared. John Canning, a deputy board chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago and CEO of Madison Dearborn Partners LLC, expressed similar misgivings. He described the Republican Party in an April interview as neanderthal for its positions on stem-cell research and global warming. He says he liked Obama's opposition to the war in Iraq and his approach to reducing greenhouse gases. I no longer find myself on the same page as Republicans.

POPSMichael Phelps Has No Business Apologizing for Taking Bong Hits Pot Use Doesn't Discriminate, but Our Pot Laws Do While society has made some progress on tolerating pot consumption, there are still many laws on the books that cause more harm than the smoking of marijuana. Close to 800,000 people were arrested for marijuana last year, and the vast majority for only possessing small amounts. Harry Levine and Deborah Small put out a report last year that found that between 1998 and 2007, New York City police arrested 374,900 people for low-level, misdemeanor marijuana offenses. That is more than eight times the number of arrests on the same charges for the previous 10-year period (between 1988 and 1997), when 45,300 people were picked up for having small amounts of marijuana.

POPSToy Helicopters Hover Over Whales to Monitor Health The findings aren't enough to establish patterns of illness because years of monitoring are required, she said. `We can't really say that animals are sick: finding bacteria or a fungus or a virus doesn't imply that an animal is sick, it just implies that it's infected,'' she said. ``That's exactly why we need a long-term study..."

POPSWhat the heck is going on here? I've noticed this word co-conspirator occurring with much more regularity over the past few years. It sounds ridiculous to me. Does it annoy anyone else? Isn't it redundant? Like saying someone is a co-team-member? Doesn't the conspirator part automatically imply the co part. For example: A and B are conspirators. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

POPSBillions being raised for clean energy In many parts of the world, new sources of energy hold the promise of bringing power to people who desperately need it. I expect solar and wind to play a major role in this.

POPSThe Imperial Unconscious In the U.S., "covert war" has long been a term for wars like the U.S.-backed Contra War against the Sandinistas in Nicaragua in the 1980s, which were openly discussed, debated, and often lauded in this country. To a large extent, when aspects of these wars have actually been "covert" -- that is, purposely hidden from anyone -- it has been from the American public, not the enemies being warred upon. At the very least, however, such language, however threadbare, offers official Washington a kind of "plausible deniability" when it comes to thinking about what kind of an "American face" we present to the world.
