"I felt an obligation as an American to do something for this family. If I was going to try to do something (for any family), this was it." Howell, 55, was on a mission to protect a gathering of Iraqi women and children last November in Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, when he first saw Mohammed. The women, widows of Iraqi policemen, were collecting government support. Mohammed's mother plunged into poverty after her husband was killed three years earlier by insurgents because he was an interpreter for American military forces, Howell said. She brought Mohammed to the gathering to show the women his injuries in hopes they would give her money. Mohammed made eye contact several times with Howell, who was serving as a physician assistant. POPSKennewick woman, 78, meets family for first time She doesn't think her parents ever planned to tell her she was adopted, but it came out when her mother was going through the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. Howell was about 11 years old at the time. Both her parents died a few years later, when she was a teenager. Howell didn't know anything about her birth mother, not even the woman's name. She tried over the years to find out more but came up empty until recently when a relative used her birth name in an internet search. Thousands of miles away in Canada, a great nephew of Marian North Brown -- Howell's birth mother -- was doing an online search of his own. He knew Brown had given a child up for adoption and wanted to see if he could track down the long-lost relative. The searchers happened on each other. In no time, Howell was on the phone with Schulties, 59, of Saskatchewan, one of her seven younger half-brothers and sisters.

In the South Carolina primary, anonymous McCain opponents used a telephone "push poll" across the state, asking voters what they thought of McCain's "illegitimate" black child. McCain lost South Carolina, and the Republican nomination.

POPSChristo Wicca I believe in the acceptance and respect of all religions. I lean towards The United Church Of Christ but find this concept of a blend of beliefs enlightening. I have reverence for the earth and feel the materials of the earth are placed here by a superior being for us to incorporate into our faith based practices and religious rituals. POPSDenzel Washington's Ministry of Movies I knew there was a reason I liked him, but I had no idea of his Christian faith. I liked him in Deja Vu and The Preacher's Wife. I liked what he said about never wanting the 'bad guys' to not receive their rightful end in his films. He acknowledges that 'the wages of sin is death' and he wanted that portrayed. His words about his life and his attitudes reminds me of those I read expressed by Justice Thomas.
