AMERICA'S IGNORANCE ON RACE

Sad, but let us hope that those who still hold on to their xenophobia and complete unfounded fears of anyone who looks different from themselves. Will, at long last, get so fed up with the status quo of the almighty greed and corporate powerbrokers, who use any tool to hold on to their powers. Consequently, making them realize that they are just pawns to the GREED GODS This "awakening" will end the long reign of power by those who only care about themselves.  Do women care more about having a token example on any ticket over finding a woman who won't support a women's right to choose? Someone who has limited experience? Blacks won't vote for Obama just because he is black, and women won't vote for women just because of token gender. I hope we are all SMART enough to look at the issues beyond race or gender.

Plantation Politics
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-24-2008
Cont..Ultimately, the theme continues for liberals: "self-hating" minorities who deviate from liberal orthodoxy are attacked because liberals view them as turn-coats. For more recent examples, see the treatment Miguel Estrada and Janice Rogers Brown received when the president nominated them to the D.C. Circuit, while the white guy, John Rodgers, sailed through to confirmation. And, recall Justice Thomas' words: "And from my standpoint, as a black American, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. " The "old order" is liberalism. Mr. Obama's cheap shot against Justice Thomas, which would be applauded in Cambridge and Hyde Park, is the most recent example of the stereotypical left-wing effort to keep minorities on the plantation.

Mostly African American Children are Assaulted Legally in Schools
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  8-20-2008    3
Just as slavery, Jim Crow laws and the subjugation of women in the USA are looked upon as primitive and embarrassing practices, I believe that corporal punishment in schools will someday be looked upon as a strange and inexplicably cruel practice. It will also be looked upon as another vehicle of racism as this study indicates. What will the conservative critics say in response? That African American children misbehave more in schools and, therefore, deserve the punishment? But isn't that what they say about higher incarceration rates for African Americans? So what is the picture that emerges from those who rationalize these institutional racist practices? In my view, it tells us that (their denials notwithstanding) conservatives believe that from childhood to adulthood African Americans are naturally more disposed to violate cultural norms, to act out in an anti-social manner. It's a racist orientation masquerading as a pro law and order stance. Corporal punish

Bush and Blacks

The message—both in words and action—is clear, consistent, and stirring . This year he joined forces with Washington D.C.’s black Democratic mayor, Anthony Williams, to win passage of the first federally funded voucher program, which will provide $7,500 each to poor minority children in the nation’s capital, giving them some of the same educational options that their wealthier neighbors enjoy. The Bush administration has also tried hard to help lift Africa out of its deepening misery. Last year, the president pledged $15 billion—a twenty-fold increase from Clinton-era funding levels—to help stem the AIDS pandemic sweeping the continent, and he has sent troops and diplomatic envoys to try to quell violence in Liberia and Sudan. African-relief activist Bob Geldof recently acknowledged, “The Bush administration is the most radical—in a positive sense—in its approach to Africa since Kennedy.”

Hillary Shadow Lengthens As Obama's Fades
merrie
by merrie  8-8-2008    2
That discovery of racial chauvinism wasn't hard once his former associate, his pastor for over 20 years, the racist Rev. Jeremiah Wright, spewed his venom. Obama himself didn't help things as he taught the nation that his dutiful grandmother was at times a small-minded bigot—no different from a "typical white person." And in an impromptu riff, Obama ridiculed small-town, working-class Pennsylvanians' supposed racial insularity. Second, many are beginning to notice how a St. Obama talks down to them. We American yokels can't speak French or Spanish. We eat too much. Our cars are too big, our houses either overheated or overcooled. And we don't put enough air in our car tires. Third, Obama knows that all doctrinaire liberals must tack rightward in the general election. But due to his inexperience, he's doing it in far clumsier fashion than any triangulating candidate in memory. Fourth, Obama is proving as inept an extemporaneous speaker as he is gifted with the teleprompter.

Beer for My Horses: Toby Keith's Ode to Lyching
zizzy
by zizzy  8-6-2008    3
During the days when Toby Keith's "Grandpappy" stalked the Jim Crow South, lynching was an institutional method of terror employed against blacks to maintain white supremacy. According to the Tuskegee Institute, between the years 1882 and 1951, 3,437 African-Americans were lynched in the United States, mostly in the heart of Dixie. Felonious assault and rape (read: corrupting "the flower of white womanhood") were the two most frequent justifications for lynch mob actions.

Toby Keith: Obama Talks, Acts and Carries Himself as a Caucasian
zizzy
by zizzy  8-6-2008    4
So it seems that the idea of "acting white" isn't confined to blacks. midknightryder13 commented at Huffington Post: n the musical "My Fair Lady" (and for that matter 'Pygmalion', the play on which it is based) -- Henry Higgins laments "Why Can't the English Learn How to Speak." The point of the song (and for that matter the premise of the play) is that the way one carries oneself and speaks is indicative of one's social class. However, Toby Keith has apparently fallen in with the incorrect assumption that class divisions are solely a function of ethnicity. Such treacle. BO is carrying himself and acting as befits someone who has been educated at Harvard. Speaking 'proper English', carrying himself with bearing and dignity. That's not 'white' -- that's IVY LEAGUE! Gee, a HARVARD GRADUATE 'acting' like he's Ivy League. Go figure.

Black-White Differences in Attitudes Toward Homosexuality and Gay Rights
jklugman
by jklugman  8-7-2008
This article uses responses from almost seven thousand blacks and forty-three thousand whites in 31 surveys conducted since 1973 to give more definitive answers on black-white attitudinal differences and their demographic roots. Despite their greater disapproval of homosexuality, blacks' opinions on sodomy laws, gay civil liberties, and employment discrimination are quite similar to whites' opinions, and African Americans are more likely to support laws prohibiting antigay discrimination. Once religious and educational differences are controlled, blacks remain more disapproving of homosexuality but are moderately more supportive of gay civil liberties and markedly more opposed to antigay employment discrimination than are whites. Yet religion, education, gender, and age all have weaker impacts on black than on white attitudes, suggesting that black and white attitudes have different roots.

Housing Covenants that endorse segregation
Kelika

I've seen these covenants turn up in title reports - they are shocking to read. "The covenants were not enacted by the government but were private contracts between homeowners. Owners who sold their house to a black family, for example, could be sued for damages by other homeowners in the neighborhood. Black home buyers could also be sued. In 1948, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Shelley vs. Kraemer that covenants were unenforceable."

Democrat House "Apologizes" for Slavery
pkronfield
by pkronfield  7-30-2008    2
This is but another stupid liberal attempt to pander to blacks for their vote this November. The trouble is, the United States Government had nothing to do with "forcing Africans into slavery". In fact it was Arab slave traders who did that. And it was the United States government who went to war to abolish slavery. This government doesn't owe negros an apology. It is the negros who owe gratitude to the United States for the bounty and opportunity afforded them. Another proof that liberals are unfit to run our magnificent country.

White poverty in South Africa

This belies the tainted history of exploitation by whites on blacks in Africa. I can imagine that a great percentage of these disenfranchised group would have been former Civil Servants, police and Armed Forces. The Real Estate industry is all but destroyed. Many of the whites, especially those from Portuguese extracts, have been in Southern Africa for 500 years. There pot of gold was the endeavour, the hard work and pure grind of existing in such a hostile environment. The turned nations into a virtual paradise, created stability and a place worth living in.I will always remember the last words said to me by my domestic. "Iche, I don't like Black Africa. No good, Boss." He ought to have known, he is a Malawian. If David Cameron really wants to know Africa, go talk to Jackson or the poor Whites. Better still, stay at home and solve the problems of the poor Brits.

Why is it Only About Race and Only About Whites?
cmstratton
by cmstratton  7-22-2008
To me, this article represents just how ingrained not just racism, but bigotry is in our society. The article focuses mostly on white people, but white people aren't the only ones who are racist. True in America's history, it was white people who enslaved blacks. But today, it's not only about black and white. Yes, some Caucasian-Americans are still racist. However, we can't neglect the fact that some African-Americans are racist, some Latino-Americans are racist, some Asian-Americans are racist. What's the commonality in all of these? "American." And it's not just about race. There are many people in our society (and not just in this country) that are discriminatory against people who are different from them, whether it be religion, sex, sexual orientation, etc. Is racism a problem - yes. But we need to focus on the bigger problem, which is that people in America have become far to afraid of and discriminatory against people who are different from them.

Sometimes, I get a notion to post on the Internet, something so outrageous, that only a person living on some mountaintop without any info at hand and with an IQ of minus 10, could believe. Just to see how breakneck fast it would go from computer to computer. Then I’ll sit back and listen to the, collective shouts of the 'Uninformed" yelling, "I TOLD YOU SO, I KNEW OBAMA WAS A DIRTY WHATCHAMACALLIT!" We sure are a nation of nincompoops (Well, too many, anyhow.). It's scary, that countless "informationally challenged" will vote for a USA president, based on rumors and negative hearsay of the opposition. What's so stressful, is that not only they, will live with the consequences but the rest of us who have half a brain will also have to live with their boneheaded mindsets. Just for fun, let's have another 8 years of Dubya to see what how low we could go.

Lurching With Abandon
merrie
by merrie  7-13-2008
The senator had previously promised to filibuster the bill if it contained the immunity clause. There has been a reluctance among blacks to openly criticize Senator Obama, but behind the scenes, there is discontent among African-Americans, as well, over Mr. Obama’s move away from progressive issues. There’s even concern that he’s doing the Obama two-step on the issue that has been the cornerstone of his campaign: his opposition to the war in Iraq. But the senator denied that any significant change should be inferred from his comment that he would “continue to refine” his policy on the war. He seems to believe that his shifts and twists and clever panders — as opposed to bold, principled leadership on important matters — will entice large numbers of independent and conservative voters to climb off the fence and run into his yard. Time flies and the Iowa caucuses seem a very long time ago.

Nablus is closed off by six checkpoints. Until 2005, one of them was open. "The checkpoints are supposedly for security purposes, but anyone who wants to perpetrate an attack can pay NIS 10 for a taxi and travel by bypass roads, or walk through the hills. The real purpose is to make life hard for the inhabitants. The civilian population suffers," says Said Abu Hijla, a lecturer at Al-Najah University in the city. In the bus I get acquainted with my two neighbours: Andrew Feinstein, a son of Holocaust survivors who is married to a Muslim woman from Bangladesh and served six years as an MP for the ANC ; and Nathan Gefen, who has a male Muslim partner and was a member of the right-wing Betar movement in his youth. Gefen is active on the Committee against AIDS in his AIDS-ravaged country.

The media does all it can to hide these facts about crime. This certainly hinders law enforcement and diminishes people's good sense when it comes to crime avoidance, thus leading to more crime victims. Scapegoating the higher incarceration rates of blacks and Hispanics on whites also promotes hatred of whites and hate crimes against them.

While I never take pleasure in the death of another human being, it is my sincere hope that with his death, another layer of bigotry in the U.S. is buried with him. I have to think that maybe seeing Obama on the brink of the presidency may have been just too much for his aging heart to take.

Slavery By Another Name
dulios
by dulios  5-2-2008    3
I saw Douglas Blackmon, Wall Street Journal reporter and author of "Slavery by Another Name", on the Tavis Smiley Show tonight. I had never before heard about neo-slavery. According to Blackmon, the South was culpable; the North was complicit. Modern companies, including US Steel, profited. The system didn't come to an end until the 1940s, "partly due to fears of enemy propaganda about American racial abuse at the beginning of World War II." 13th Amendment be damned, this sale of "convicts" to private enterprises to pay of "debts" was perfectly legal until 1951.
