How do we - and to what extent should we - get bicyclists to obey traffic laws?
Lexica
by Lexica  12-3-2009
More: Enter the Idaho stop-sign law. The rule, passed by the Idaho state legislature in 1982 and updated in 2005, essentially allows bikers to treat stop signs as yield signs. If a biker slows down and sees no cars coming, he or she can roll through a stop sign—a so-called "rolling stop." The "Idaho stop" has become a rallying point for vehicularists and facilitators alike—a sort of Great Compromise for bicycles.… Skeptics say that the rule would lead to more crashes. But a follow-up study of the Idaho statute found that accidents involving bikes actually decreased the year after the law was passed and haven't varied much since.

Copenhagen Bike City!

by thisnamecantbetaken  12-7-2009    2
Today, the climate-change conference started in my beloved Copenhagen. Ugh. Anyway, whatever the politicians may or may not decide, the people of Denmark aren't waiting around for "orders from above". Be the change you want to see. :) Below is a bonus video! At the end of the video, this cute American guy is having a beer in Nyhavn, which is one of my favourite haunts!! Gotta love it. Cheers, buddy. .:D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrKXSRafDOI Oh...and here's a clip song, of course:... (and yes, I have a bike, too. ) .:p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CTPLUcQAjk

I would provide him a force of 30,000, which is fully 75% of a 110% commitment. When you multiply it out, that's... let's see... that's almost an 83% total commitment to mission success! Not only that, I also pledged to provide you with all the healthy snacks and juice boxes you will need until the designated 5:30 pickup time. As an extra bonus to help you out, I secured a commitment of 10,000 additional special troops from our European allies. In fact, I think I see one of them in the back seat -- there in the blue bicycle helmet. What's your name son? Pierre? That's... okay... okay, Pierre, please stop crying. Yes, I promised Mr. Sarkozy you'll be home soon. Now before we back out of the driveway, we must ask ourselves an important question: who hasn't gone to the bathroom? Raise your hands now, because we have a long drive ahead of us. Nobody? Sure? Because man, after that third cup of coffee I'm thinking I better make a safety pee. I'll be right back,

Anne Mustoe: headmistress and round-the-world cyclist (1933-2009)
Lexica
by Lexica  12-3-2009
More: The glimpse of the lone cyclist which inspired her own ambition to cycle round the world came in January 1983. She said it took her four years from that defining moment to screw up her courage, resign her job and cycle into the sunrise, but she calculated that she had no ties, her stepsons were married off, and she could just afford it if she lived modestly until her pension came through.… All her incident-packed journeys were recounted in a warm, accessible, no-nonsense prose in which a wry, understated humour was coupled with indefatigable fortitude, enthusiasm and optimism, making light of robberies, injuries, freak floods, storms, desert heat waves, blizzards in the Rockies and ferocious winds in Jutland and Patagonia — and even of being knocked off her bike by a short-sighted nonagenarian in a Fiat Panda. Mustoe cycled off on her last expedition in May this year, but became ill in Syria. She died in Aleppo (Haleb). RIP, Ms. Mustoe.

Declare your apartment an independent nation, and sue your neighbors upstairs for "violating your airspace". 19. Forget the punchline to a long joke, but assure the listener it was a "real hoot." 20. Book review: The High Cost of Free Parking
Lexica
by Lexica  11-17-2009    1
More: By breaking the relationship between use and payment, "free" parking eliminates the negative feedback that keeps the system in balance. As a result, everyone decides to drive everywhere, and the car crowds out other forms of transportation… Of all the transport systems available, including public transit, shipping, and rail, cars are unique in that terminal costs (doing something with your vehicle when the trip is finished) are offset to the rest of the economy… Worse still, "free" parking provides the biggest per-mile subsidy to the shortest trips, meaning drivers have a major incentive to drive to destinations they would otherwise be able to reach with ease by foot or bicycle… Anticipating the righteous ire of those drivers accustomed to free parking, Shoup notes that the biggest barrier to eliminating this subsidy is political, not technical, and proper implementation is critical.

Biking 150 miles for a cause - in a dress and high heels
Lexica
by Lexica  11-5-2009    3
More: It all started when Tsai began to work in a hospital many years ago. A native of Taiwan, she was trained in Japan in the art of shiatsu massage. So while working at the hospital, "I started to put my hands where they hurt," she says. Tsai began regularly giving massages to cancer patients, until one day, about 26 years ago, she massaged a patient with MS. It was then and there that she first heard about the bike ride and decided to participate. "In Taiwan, riding a bike is very common," explains Tsai's grandson, Alan Sim, who also participates in City to Shore -- 2009 was his sixth year. "So she grabbed her little one-speed bike and was doing the ride." And why the nice dress and high heels? Tsai says that's just her normal biking outfit. "I went to church, so I always dressed up and would ride my bicycle," she says. "So that's why I do it that way -- I do it that way naturally. That's the way I ride my bike." :-D

Delta Airzound Bike Horn
Lexica
by Lexica  11-2-2009
More, from the comments: Easily the most useful gadget I've ever bought for my bike. Commuting to and from school in NYC, it sees daily use, especially since a good number of pedestrians cross against the light, or in the middle of the street without looking for whats coming first, and a lot of drivers have a bad habit of checking their mirrors after they've already started turning. Also extremely effective at clearing pigeons on the road, which aren't always afraid of people. The only problem that I've had with it is that in dusty conditions, dirt can find its way inside and prevent the diaphragm from vibrating properly, which is most likely the problem that Narwhal was having. But this is why the cover over the diaphragm can be unscrewed and the dirt cleaned out. I usually have to do that after about a month of normal use.

15-Year-Old Boy Set On Fire
sahara
by sahara  10-25-2009
Investigators said one of the teens doused Brewer with rubbing alcohol and Mendez flicked a lighter at him in retaliation for reporting an attempted bicycle theft Sunday night. "This group of kids thought that because the kid may have snitched him out and turned him in because they were trying to steal his dad's bike, they felt, in their mind, it was OK to set him on fire," Sheriff Al Lamberti said. Detectives said Brewer skipped school and went to the apartment complex to visit a friend at the time of the attack. "A couple of them last night were laughing about it," Sgt. Steve Feeley said of the suspects. So often we are pointing fingers at the horrors that people do to one another in other countries, before we do that we should ask ourselves what is going wrong in our own! This is just plain sick, and very sad. News video at source.

If you've ever been to South America, you probably know that there are flat parts...and there are not so flat parts, so Ryan definitely has his work cut out for him. Though, Ryan has done extensive bike touring around the world, and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in the process, so maybe he has "some" idea of what he is in for. This time he wants to up the ante and single-handedly raise $250,000USD to be given
