POPSAre you funding cluster bombs? Cluster bombs are large explosive weapons that scatter dozens or hundreds of smaller submunitions over a wide area. They cannot distinguish between military targets and civilians. Many submunitions fail to detonate on impact and, like landmines, continue to kill and maim people long after the conflict has ended. Find out more about Dtar's story by watching this short film. The good The global campaign to eradicate cluster bombs, spearheaded by the Cluster Munitions Coalition, reached a major breakthrough in 2008 when governments negotiated an international treaty to ban them. So far, 103 countries have joined the Convention on Cluster Munitions, including the UK. The bad Although the UK government has signed the ban and stopped production of cluster bombs, UK banks still invest in cluster bomb producers in countries that have not yet outlawed them. A ban simply can’t be effective if there is still funding for the production of these weapons.

POPSThe Story of the Red Poppy So the Americans arranged for artificial poppies to be made by women in war-ravaged northern France. The funds raised from selling the poppies were for children who had suffered because of the war. In Britain, the weary soldiers came back from the grimness of war to find that life was hard at home too, though in a different way. Many of the men were wounded or disabled or suffering the effects of gas and shell-shock. Many were physically or mentally unable to work; many others found that there were no jobs anyway. The provision made for them by the state was less than adequate. They certainly didn't get the heroes' homecoming that they had been led to expect. So ex-servicemen's societies united in 1921 to form the British Legion. Its purpose was to provide support to ex-servicemen, especially the disabled, and their families, and it was to become one of the most successful British charities ever.

POPSMD's Intentionally End Lives in 1 in 6 UK Deaths The last paragraph is really shocking. Before the whole debate over state healthcare started in the US, 16.5% all deaths were physician assisted. And that's only mentioned in passing, not as the lead in the article.

POPSSpilt milk - farmers protest prices Dairy farmers here have threatened similar action. The only small dairy farms making any money are those with side industries such as fancy milk byproducts. The rest really struggle. And it isn't an easy job at the best of times.

POPSEarly Risers Crash Faster Than People Who Stay Up Late More important, these regions included the suprachiasmatic area, which is home to the body’s circadian clock. This area sends signals to boost alertness as the pressure to sleep mounts. Unlike night owls, early risers didn’t get this late-day lift. Peigneux says faster activation of sleep pressure appears to prevent early birds from fully benefiting from the circadian signal, as evening types do. Wait wait, did he just say the night owls showed no difference in attention-related brain activity and instead, after 10 hours they had grown more alert? This is great! I always worried about that, now seems like I don't have to, anymore. :D

POPSRent-a-Colony - 99 years "We have the money," so China, South Korea, France, Qatar, whoever has the cash thinks they can buy up land and resources all over Africa because they need the short term cash because they are still tied to an external market economy that has left nation after nation with no appreciable internal market. It's Colony 2.0 time!
