"Fat Talk" Not Spoken Here
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-23-2009    2
Fat Talk Free Week encourages women to strive for a healthy ideal and take care of their bodies by focusing on health – not weight or size. The campaign encourages women to let go of the fat talk that plagues our every day conversations and promotes a celebration of things about ourselves that have nothing to do with the way we look. Breaking free from the unrealistic thin ideal of beauty has never been more urgent. Did you know that: * 1 out of 8 adolescent girls reported starving themselves to lose weight * 40% of moms tell their adolescent daughters to diet and 45% of these girls are of average weight * 81% of 10 year old girls are afraid of being fat * 51% of 9 and 10 year old girls feel better about themselves if they are on a diet * More than 2/3 of women ages 18-25 would rather be mean or stupid than be fat * Over 50% of women ages 18-25 would rather be hit by a truck than be fat * 70 million people worldwide struggle with eating disord

"The Family" - Fundamentalism, Friends In High Places
sahara
by sahara  10-15-2009    3
Headquartered in Washington, D.C. at a place known as the "C Street Center" or "Fellowship House," this 1890 townhouse, located behind the Madison Annex of the Library of Congress and near the United States Capitol, has 12 bedrooms, nine bathrooms, five living rooms, four dining rooms, three offices, a kitchen, and a small "chapel". The property is exempt from real property taxes because it is classified as a "special purpose" use. District of Columbia law exempts from taxation "buildings belonging to religious corporations or societies primarily and regularly used for religious worship, study, training, and missionary activities" and "buildings belonging to organizations which are charged with the administration, coordination, or unification of activities, locally or otherwise, of institutions or organizations entitled to exemption."

Texas DNA exonerees find prosperity after prison
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  9-4-2009
More: Two who served about 26 years in prison for rape will receive lump sums of about $2 million apiece. Another, Steven Phillips, who spent about 24 years in prison for sexual assault and burglary, will get about $1.9 million. The biggest compensation package will likely go to James Woodard, who spent more than 27 years in prison for a 1980 murder that DNA testing later showed he did not commit. He eventually could receive nearly $2.2 million but first needs a writ from the state's Court of Criminal Appeals or a pardon from the governor. McGowan and the others are among 38 DNA exonerees in Texas, according to the Innocence Project, a New York legal center that specializes in overturning wrongful convictions. Dallas County alone has 21 cases in which a judge overturned guilty verdicts based on DNA evidence, though prosecutors plan to retry one of those.

How rich bastards like me rip off taxpayers for millions of dollars
foxyarse
by foxyarse  6-26-2009    2
No one should build so close to an ocean." But I built anyway. Why? As my eager-for-the-business architect said, "Why not? If the ocean destroys your house, the government will pay for a new one." What? Why would the government do that? Why would it encourage people to build in such risky places? That would be insane. But the architect was right. If the ocean took my house, Uncle Sam would pay to replace it under the National Flood Insurance Program. Since private insurers weren’t dumb enough to sell cheap insurance to people who built on the edges of oceans or rivers, Congress decided the government should step in and do it. So if the ocean ate what I built, I could rebuild and rebuild again and again -- there was no limit to the number of claims on the same property in the same location -- up to a maximum of $250,000 per house per flood. And you taxpayers would pay for it.

Shooting Them In The Foot
debbyski
by debbyski  6-28-2009    4
"Conservatives touted abstinence-only education, which was a flop, when real sex education was needed, most desperately in red states. According to 2006 data from the Guttmacher Institute, those red states accounted for eight of the 10 states with the highest teenage birthrates. And, a study titled “Red Light States: Who Buys Online Adult Entertainment?” that was conducted by Benjamin Edelman, an assistant professor of business at Harvard Business School and published earlier this year in the Journal of Economic Perspectives found that subscriptions to online pornography sites were “more prevalent in states where surveys indicate conservative positions on religion, gender roles, and sexuality” and in states where “more people agree that ‘I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage.’ ” They could avoid this hypocrisy by focusing more on what happens in their own bedrooms and avoiding the trap of judging what goes on in everyone else’s."

"Nadya's Not Capable Of Raising Fourteen Children"
merrie
by merrie  2-9-2009    1
Angela told RadarOnline.com that Nadya turned her boyfriend into a sperm donor for all 14 kids, but refused to marry him. "He was in love with her and wanted to marry her," said Angela. "But Nadya wanted to have children on her own." Nadya was so determined to have children, she first became pregnant at 16, Angela told RadarOnline.com. She miscarried, said Angela, and discovered she had blocked fallopian tubes. Angela said that she and Nadya's father, Ed, begged one doctor not to implant any more embryos in Nadya, who already had six children. But Nadya found another doctor to implant six embryos, and two split, resulting in eight more babies. That doctor's decision to perform the in vitro has left the octuplets grandmother furious. "I'm really angry about that," she told RadarOnline.com. Angela also voiced her anger over Nadya's claim she was raised in a dysfunctional family and was lonely as a child.

When elected, Obama's Daunting Prospects
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-3-2008
Not much facts in the clip, other than saying the recent big Economic Meltdown in the last days of the Bush nightmare years are going to be tough to fix. Lots of folks feel the same way, I think: this guys going to have a tough job. I don't envy him. He'll probably end his term looking 20-years older. He'll never have private time again excepts when he barricades the bedrooms door -- and even then some Secret Service guy might wake him up in the middle of the night and say something like: "Mr. President, I'm afraid we've lost California."
