POPS Nature Picking Up Obama's Slack Bear kills militants in Kashmir By Altaf Hussain BBC News, Srinagar A bear killed two militants after discovering them in its den in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say. Two other militants escaped, one of them badly wounded, after the attack in Kulgam district, south of Srinagar. The militants had assault rifles but were taken by surprise - police found the remains of pudding they had made to eat when the bear attacked. Animal attacks Wildlife experts say the conflict in Kashmir has actually resulted in an increase in the population of bears and leopards. Following the outbreak of the insurgency people had to hand in their weapons to police - which put a halt to poaching. For much of the 1980s and 1990s, it was in a positive cycle, that means warmer than average. And observations have revealed that global temperatures were warm too. But in the last few years it has been losing its warmth and has recently started to cool down. These cycles in the past have lasted for nearly 30 years.

Reporting in the journal Nature, the team found that small "repeating earthquakes" became more frequent as the San Andreas Fault weakened. POPSThe Dust Storm Saga We here are still engulfed by dust and smoke from fires. The dust carried all the way to the very top of queensland and across the ocean to kiwi land. People here have no idea how much is dust and how much smoke. There is a difference though our skies are a white haze - so the sun looks like the moon and I wrote to friends and said, "I feel like I am on the moon looking at the moon's moon." Strange is an understatement. The second photo is one I took today we are almost into a whole week of the dust, haze storm. Personally, I have not been too affected by it. This article from BBC is interesting though. We had floods earlier this year that flooded 60% of Queensland. A good friend here, has a husband who works in a mine inland. The Environmental Protection Agency called for it to be closed down because the tailings dam was overflowing into the main water catchment for the town and all the towns further downstream. It had a pH of 2.

POPSVenezuela to Get Russian Missiles Venezuela is involved in a long-running diplomatic stand-off with neighbouring Colombia, over the latter's plans to allow US troops greater access to its military bases. Colombia says the US forces will help in the war against drugs and left-wing guerrillas and will not destabilise the region. Mr Chavez, a fierce opponent of US foreign policy, did not say how many missiles he had ordered. Russia has been strengthening its ties with several Latin American countries, including Venezuela.
