POPSAmericans whinge about proposed Internet bandwidth cap For the first time ever, it seems American ISPs are thinking of implementing bandwidth caps to curtail Internet usage, and many are up in arms about it. But Comcast's mooted 250 Gig cap seems infinitely generous compared with Telkom's 3 Gig monthly maximum, and anything else one has to pay extra for.

POPSSaving the Internet Comcast floated the idea of a 250 gigabyte cap in May and mentioned then that it might charge users $15 for every 10 gigabytes they go over, but the overage fee was missing in Thursday's announcement. Curbing the top users is necessary to keep the network fast and responsive for other users, Comcast has said.

POPSComcast Limiting Internet Use Comcast is the first to do the dirty deed. Instead of investments into newer and more internet infrastructure, they will stop and charge xtra for more usage. As technologies evolve more and more, your bandwidth hog today, is the average consumer tomorrow. They will not only limit internet usage, but more importantly, they will stifle newer and better technologies. Games and HDTV will use way more bandwidth than anything today. Comcast-CONCAST- really, is standing in the way of the future of the internet

POPSComcast's Usage Cap: What Will It Mean To You? Users’ monthly fee are tied to their broadband usage, which is capped at 5 Gigabytes to 40 Gigabytes. I bet that if you start tracking your broadband usage, with software listed here, you’ll be unpleasantly surprised. The GigaOM 250 GB Challenge & 5 Tools To Monitor Your Bandwidth Consumption http://gigaom.com/2008/08/29/the-gigaom-250-gb-challenge/ AT&T and Verizon may soon follow in Time Warner’s footsteps, say analysts. I am still waiting for comments from both companies. Home broadband providers are increasingly competing with a slew of new, wireless broadband carriers like Clearwire. With consumers having more choices about which broadband provider to go with, Comcast and others simply can’t afford to tighten their usage caps too much – or to keep them at the current levels for long.

POPSSwitch on a chip to boost internet speed What a great improvement. Telstra is among the worst in the world, old equipment, just for starters. The comparison will show that this will make us as fast as the rest of the world.

POPSCharging by the Byte to Curb Internet Traffic Think about it--the telecoms have us by the short hairs. They also have immunity (or soon will) from prosecution for helping the Gov't spy on us if they want. We need to speak out about this, wherever possible.

POPSConfessions of a Wi-Fi Thief Some people thought of creative names for their networks: ParisBrooklyn, MessageInaBottle. Some were boring: linksys, NETGEAR, default. I was always happy to see the boring ones, because the people who don't bother thinking of clever names for their home networks are the same people who don't bother to password-protect them (A website called ThinkGeek.com sells a T shirt with a battery-powered wi-fi detector that displays the ambient signal strength wherever you happen to be standing. It's supercool, though if I'm too cheap to pay for broadband, I'm definitely too cheap to spend $30 on a T shirt.)

POPSCharging By The Byte To Curb Internet Traffic
“Based on current trends, total bandwidth in the AT&T network will increase by four times over the next three years,” the company said in a statement. All three companies say that placing caps on broadband use will ensure fair access for all users. Internet metering is a throwback to the days of dial-up service, but at a time when video and interactive games are becoming popular, the experiments could have huge implications for the future of the Web. Even if the caps are far above the average users’ consumption, their mere existence could cause users to reduce their time online. Just ask people who carefully monitor their monthly allotments of cellphone minutes and text messages. “As soon as you put serious uncertainty as to cost on the table, people’s feeling of freedom to predict cost dries up and so does innovation and trying new applications,” Vint Cerf, the chief Internet evangelist for Google who is often called the “father of the Internet.”

POPSVirgin Media is the Law Another BBC post, I do read other sites, but I figured this I should share. Virgin plan to send letters to those people it feels are downloading and sharing music, working in conjunction with the BPI. Ok, so I know there is the whole legal issue here, but the context of the article is more related to TV shows, and I must admit, the guy has a point, we've all done it at some point I'm sure, whether it's downloading, or streaming from site like youtube. For instance, right now I'm watching music videos for Poets of the Fall on youtube, totally illegal, but the easiest way to see them. At the moment I'm using the 20Mb service from Virgin, and although it suits my needs (I have a housemate who uses it lots, I play the xbox online lots, and I host an FTP server for my dad to backup his files every night, so bandwidth usage is hgh) I may consider changing if this is the shape of things to come.

POPSA Giant Step Back for Broadband Internet High speed internet is a luxury we've taken forgranted, now that our unlimited bandwidth stands to be capped it is sad to think of all the technologies we used to enjoy that will be taken away from us.

POPS Satellite Imagery And Oil And Gas Exploration Environment protection Petroleum companies are monitoring their environmental impact much more rigorously now, both in North America and around the world. Our multispectral imagery is essential for mapping land use and environmental impact. Periodic resurveying of oil fields, pipeline corridors and refineries is an efficient and accurate method for ensuring that environmental impact is limited to an absolute minimum. By measuring the length and width of the right of way through which seismic lines have been acquired, oil companies can document their impact on the local forests and vegetation. Multi-date imagery is critical too when you need it because the information is time stamped documentation of land status on a fixed date. Our imagery assures alignment between GIS data and ground truth and provides a strong foundation for sound decision making throughout the oil and gas lifecycle.

POPSWhy life speeds up as you grow older Douwe Draaisma, Professor of Psychology at the University of Groningen, will discuss some of the temporal illusions experienced in everyday life using insights from the psychology of autobiographical memory and brain science. Professor Draaisma will focus on experiences ranging from the mysterious expansion of the last few seconds before an impact, such as in a collision or a fall; to the subjective, but unmistakable sensation reported by many past their forties: life seems to speed up with age.

POPS|\| | |/| - Trent Reznor to fans: "Thank you" I'm sure you've heard of this by now... but have you heard it yet? I've been listening to the FLAC version since Monday. &All I could possibly say is wow! . . . no *uberWow*. 'theslip' is nine inch nails latest album. But unlike 'Ghost ' nin's last four digital albums, which Trent Reznor also released online. Where as Ghost gave you the option to pay; theslip is only available for free. Than with theslip you also get all of the cover art, inserts, &etc with the downloads. Which after you download, you can do literally anything with. I'm already playing around w/remixing portions of track 7 & 9. They're my two personal faves, for the moment at least. The last difference between Ghost &theslip is the where as Ghost were only instrumentals/digital. theslip is just as lyrically intense as nin's previous halo albums. So, as always, take a few minutes or hours, depending on your bandwidth, than, what else? enjoy yourself!

POPSCuba lifts ban on home computers From the website: The government says it is unable to connect to the giant undersea fibre-optic cables because of the US trade embargo. All online connections today are via satellite which has limited bandwidth and is expensive to use. Cuba's anti-American ally, Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez, is laying a new cable under the Caribbean. It remains unclear whether, once the connection is completed, the authorities will then allow unrestricted access to the world wide web.
