MYJ | Back to COH tomorrow for IVIG
altaloman
by altaloman  1-5-2010
What is IVIG? My COH physicians have determined that I need a booster dose of immunoglobulins (aka IVIG), so that infusion is scheduled for about 5-6 hours tomorrow. Here is some background on the procedure to be followed on Friday by a separate (similar duration) infusion of the miracle substance called Rituxan that is also an immune system enhancer. Even though we are still in remission officially from the lymphoma following the radiation (TomoTherapy) treatment in September, these infusions are designed to help my immune system prevent any return of the disease and to aid in other preventions of sickness. All things considered, I have been significantly well since the start of my medical leave at the end of August, or at least since the completion of the radiation treatment. Just being cancer free is a big part of that positive status report. ___ http://google.twi.bz/hv ___ http://google.twi.bz/As ___ http://altacities.com ___ http://me.twi.bz/y

How to squeeze more sour from your sourdough starter
Lexica
by Lexica  1-2-2010
More: I've learned a lot, however, since this posting 8 months ago. A couple of things that I now know make a LOT of difference. * Make sure that at least the final rise at about 85 degrees F: It really does make a huge difference in flavor and rise. The loaf I made today was just bursting out of the pan after only 2 hours of proofing at 85 degrees. * Lengthen the fermentation time: Whatever the amount of starter you're using, deflating the dough (preferably through stretching and folding) to give the dough more time to ferment will definitely increase flavor. Of all of these, the 85 degree proof is, I think, by far the most important.

What Happens When the Microbes That Keep Us Healthy Disappear?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  1-2-2010    2
"When antibiotics were first introduced, they were miraculous drugs—and they still are," Blaser says. "But it really wasn't fully considered that antibiotics select for resistance." And an antibiotic will not only impact the infection it is targeted for. "It will select for resistance across the microbiome," he added. Blaser doesn't call for abandoning a whole class of effective drugs, but he does advocate for a better understanding of the potential trade-offs—even if we might not yet have all the answers. "I don't think anyone was putting that trade-off on the plate," says Blaser, who notes that both doctors and patients should reserve antibiotic use to cases where they are necessary.

Bacteria growing in our soil
bhgfarms
by bhgfarms  1-1-2010
This is a huge thing for my family. My little girl who is now 3 came down with Ecoli poisoning 2 years ago. Her kidneys shut down and she had to have multiple blood transfusions..we almost lost her. She is now a healthy and normal little girl. But after much research we could not find a source..we were vegetarian at the time. The practice in our area was/is to put human manure on the fields! It is very well know that human waste is full of the drugs that everyone takes. They can clean the bacteria out of the water but not the drugs! Now if a farmer puts cow poop on his veggie field or chicken or human..they are all full of by products of extreme drugs and antibiotics..and these will make their way into the food supply. The only way to stop this is by many people taking a stand! We are headed for self sustainability..growing our own as much as possible!

A Giant Virus Discovery Trumps SciFi
tabsey
by tabsey  12-14-2009
Some viruses become so large that other viruses can infect them, tiny super-specialized parasites piggy-backing their genetic code on their huge cousins. Others simply fail, their patchwork genomes not up to the challenges of the environment. The Marseillevirus has stolen ten percent of its chromosomes from bacteria it once infected, and anther five percent from the amoebic host of the party. It's even infiltrated other giant viruses, taking parts of the mimivirus for its own purposes. Don't worry about any mass-media scare stories: this thing is no threat to us and there isn't a shred of evidence to suggest otherwise. Not that the latter necessarily affects the former.
