POPSTolstoy & Gandhi: Two Giants Bound By Pacifism
Enlightening account of the relationship between Tolstoy & Gandhi "In South Africa, Tolstoy's writings landed on the desk of a young Indian dissident, Mahatma Gandhi. He was overwhelmed, declaring that after reading Tolstoy his "lack of faith in non-violence vanished." He hung a picture of Tolstoy on his office wall and named the camp where he trained activists in peaceful resistance Tolstoy Farm. Gandhi wrote five letters to Leo Tolstoy and received four in return, all glowing with praise and intellectual exchange. In his last letter, written in September 1910 only weeks before his death, Tolstoy told Gandhi that his activity was "the most central and important of all the work now being done in the world." Years later, Gandhi repaid the compliment, writing that he knew of no one "in India or anywhere else who has had as profound an understanding of nonviolence as Tolstoy had." Tolstoy had inspired Gandhi's legendary instruction to "be the change you want to see in the worl

POPSFOX forced to apologise for THIRD TIME in TWO Weeks The apology comes just over a week after one of Fox's anchormen expressed regret for a comment on the night that Obama won the Democratic nomination. Obama, in a show of affection, lightly touched his fist against Michelle's and the anchorwoman referred to it as a "terrorist fist jab". Previously, a Fox contributor Liz Trotta had to apologise after making a joke about Obama being assassinated. The trio of apologies is embarrassing for Fox. Murdoch last month praised Obama but stopped short of endorsing him, though his New York Post came out for Obama in January.

POPSAxis of Evil: SOA School of the Americas/WHINSEC "SOA Watch is an independent organization that seeks to close the US Army School of the Americas, under whatever name it is called, through vigils and fasts, demonstrations and non-violent protest, as well as media and legislative work. The Pentagon has responded to the growing movement and Congress' near closure of the SOA with a PR campaign to give the SOA a new image. In an attempt to disassociate the school with its horrific past, the SOA was renamed the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation in January of 2001."

POPSWhy George Bush is Insane "We are not the doctors. We are the disease". People do not forget. They do not forget the death of their fellows, they do not forget torture and mutilation, they do not forget injustice, they do not forget oppression, they do not forget the terrorism of mighty powers. They not only don't forget. They strike back.

POPSElection of Obama spurs "hundreds" of race threats, crimes Four North Carolina State University students admitted writing "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head," in a tunnel meant for free speech. At Standish, Maine, a sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool. Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count. Let's hope someone wins." Second- and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said. Black figures were hanged by nooses from trees on Mount Desert Island, Maine, the Bangor Daily News reported. Crosses were burned in yards of Obama supporters in Hardwick, N.J., and Apolacan Township, Pa. Their time is coming an end, and they know it: whites will no longer be the majority population in the US by 2050.

POPSBill Maher Overboard! continued: "But this is the typical Left these days...there are no limits on their hatred for the Bush Administration. It goes beyond disagreeing over politics, they actually hate the GOP. They hate George Bush and they hate Dick Cheney. And many on the extreme fringe have advocated killing them both. Bill Maher is just the latest voice."

POPSBenazir Bhutto Assassinated When I saw this I couldn't believe it. I was sure the story would have been clipped, but I went to three of four different articles before it sank it. I was struck by the idea that there are those who who would benefit far more from Bhutto's Death than Al Qaeda Perhaps Al Qaeda wanted Musharraf to have an election that was free of opposition- an election in to be held in 13 days

POPSHarvey Milk Day....HOORAY!! It's a joy to hear that California may establish a state holiday in the name of civil rights leader and the first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk who was assassinated in 1978. Harvey is a hero to the gay community, and yet he fought for the rights of all people, not just his fellow gay Americans. This is another example of how attitudes are changing in the U.S. Even though it gets discouraging at times, the country is on the road to accepting gays, and lesbians as equal to every other American.

POPSIs Our Worship of Consumerism and Technology Making Us Depressed? The Unhappiness Taboo There are many possible reasons for the increasing rate of depression among Americans, but I believe that one important cause is a culture that demands happiness. The pressure to be in a good mood can make people ashamed of not being in one. This "pain over pain" can then result in normal low moods becoming prolonged bouts of despair.
