POPSTrue Love's Cost of the 12 Days of Christmas: Chirstmas Price Index True Loves to face most expensive Christmas ever as PNC Christmas Price Index jumps 8.1% in 2008. Cost of “The 12 Days of Christmas” Song Items Reflect Consumer Pricing Trends; Interactive Web Site Provides Teachers and Students With Insights on U.S. Economy. Each year, the Christmas Price Index reflects trends in the broader economy. This year, commodities prices, concerns about increased energy and shipping costs, jobs, and a second straight minimum wage increase were major factors in the cost. Swans have always been expensive because they are rare: in 1995 there were only 14,000. French hens are "cheaper" because they are in less demand. Performance artists such as pipers piping or drummers drumming receive higher wages due to their specialized skills - while maids-a-milking are the only unskilled laborers in the index.

POPSThe future of science...is art
"But before any of this can happen, our two existing cultures must modify their habits. First of all, the humanities must sincerely engage with the sciences. Henry James defined the writer as someone on whom nothing is lost; artists must heed his call, and not ignore science's inspiring descriptions of reality. At the same time, the sciences must recognize that their truths are not the only truths. No single area of knowledge has a monopoly on knowledge. As Karl Popper, an eminent defender of science wrote, "It is imperative that we give up the idea of ultimate sources of knowledge, and admit that all knowledge is human; that it is mixed with our errors, our prejudices, our dreams, and our hopes; that all we can do is to grope for truth even though it is beyond our reach." The struggle for scientific truth is long and hard and never ending. If we want to get an answer to our deepest questions—the questions of who we are and what everything is—we will need to draw from both science

POPSRosie O'Donnell Attempts to Bring Back Variety TV It's about time. Variety has been missing from our TVs for decades, and I for one have missed it. I wish Rosie lots of luck with her "audition" show Wednesday, with hopes that she will return on a weekly basis, along with other artists who are waiting in the wings for shows of their own.

POPSSecret Postcards: who's the artist? Just occurred to me you could make yourself a great parlour game. Throw in some images of Picasso, chicken droppings, Pollack, baby vomit, a two year old's scrawlings and a jar of pickled pilchards. Great morth and embarrassments to be had!

POPSThe eHarmony Shakedown Perhaps heterosexual men and women should start filing lawsuits against gay dating websites and undermine their businesses. Coerced tolerance and diversity-by-fiat cut both ways.

POPSArtists stage street scenes to lurk in Google maps Like many first-time Street View users, Kinsley and Hewlett, then roommates, typed in their address and found their house. Kinsley and Hewlett soon found themselves discussing surveillance and virtual reality, and began considering how they might explore those issues and Street View through art. "But instead of dwelling on the darker undertones of these issues, we began to think about ways of playing with the system," Kinsley said in an e-mail interview from Iceland, where he is participating in an artist residency. The "Street With a View" project was his master of fine arts thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University. "We were interested in interjecting something staged, something fictional, into Street View and playing with - and subtly questioning - the notion of reality in something that we perceive as a factual representation of our world," said Kinsley, 26.

POPSUnintentionally sexual comic book covers: part 1 Now, I'm no expert on primate facial expressions, but I think the look on the monkey's face can best be described as: concerned. Of course, I too would be concerned if a moon-bound astronaut mistook me for being a girl from outer space and wanted to make sweet love to my monkey butt. And maybe I'm reading too much into this, but you can only see one of the astronaut's arms on the cover. I'll let you connect the dots, but I can say this much: I've only seen a grin like that on a man's face one other time, and my parents made sure to lock the door from that day on.

POPSDeaf Jam Determined to bring the deaf and hard-of hearing community into the music world, D-PAN has further partnered with the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. The university is championing ways to apply new wireless technology that will aid the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in a live concert setting, and augment their capacity to "feel" the music. Forbes has his eyes on the hearing-centric music festivals. "I would love to see myself and other deaf artists going out performing on stage. Like at Lollapalooza. I think people would think it's cool to see deaf artists signing."

POPSPorn stars are the new crossover artists There are also some complaints : "Back in the early days of porn, all the porn had a sense of humor to it, very bawdy, very winky, almost vaudevillian," he says. "It feels to me like the sense of humor has seeped out of porn. Audiences want to go straight to the action." "Asked why adult stars have become more acceptable in Hollywood, Soderbergh cited the proliferation of Internet porn"

POPSWriters really spoof it up. but wouldn't it cool if this was true? Hundreds of independent writers, artists, and activists are claiming credit for an elaborate project, 6 months in the making, in which 1.2 million copies of a "special edition" of the New York Times were distributed in cities across the U.S. by thousands of volunteers. The papers, dated July 4th of next year, were headlined with long-awaited news: "IRAQ WAR ENDS". The edition, which bears the same look and feel as the real deal, includes stories describing what the future could hold: national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for CEOs, etc. There was also a spoof site, at http://www.nytimes-se.com/.

POPSArtist as Public Servant A successful artwork is one that somehow causes that audience to experience a shift in perception. With this understanding, I was able to modify my orientation from that of an artist creating objects for consumption to that of an artist working as a public servant to create experiences that change people’s ideas of what it means to be a community. agree?/disagree?

POPSOur remarkable ability to see and understand the 3-dimensional structure of objects As a first step toward this neuroaesthetic question, the Connor laboratory plans to collaborate with the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore to study human responses to sculptural shape. .My interest is in finding out what happens between a visitor's brain and a work of art," said Vikan. "Knowing what effect art has on patrons' brains will contribute to techniques of display -- lighting and color and arrangement -- that will enhance their experiences when they come into the museum".
