Climate Change Is Already Affecting the West's Water
papananook
by papananook  8-25-2008    6
Unless it slaps them in the face, the typical American can't be bothered by an abstract threat. If there's a global warming event -- a mammoth hurricane, tornado, or forest fire -- in our neighborhood, then we get concerned. From this perspective, the loss of a few thousand acres of ice in a remote corner of Montana hardly seems significant. Most of us don't see it as a danger sign. But it is. Disappearing glaciers is a harbinger of huge problems. In the West, the most obvious is drought.

Does Free Will Make You a Better Person? -New Research Says "Yes"
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-22-2008
People cheating have nothing to do with facts and physical laws, but with their beliefs about themselves and others. Beliefs can be amazingly selective: the same person can believe in free will in one occasion, and not believe it in another occasion. Yet what a person might believe in a given situation is pretty deterministic... :-)

How the Surge has left us wounded

"If we accept the mainstream narrative on its face, the surge worked. It transformed the U.S. troop presence from being counterproductive to being indispensable for maintaining stability. But can we continue with anything close to the current level of troops deployed over there?"

Is Nintendo a snake oil salesman?
Mary Jane Irwin
by Mary Jane Irwin  6-19-2008    2
It's true. Games like Wii Fit and Brain Age play to your mental and physical insecurities, but there's no real proof that they actually improve either. From experience, Wii Fit is more motivational tool than workout machine: http://is.gd/Bo3 EDIT: I should emphasize that this is clipped from an opinion piece, so it's not definitively declaring Nintendo's products bogus.

Secret Service "Experts" not knowing that the 9/11 nightmare was about to happen, Economic "Experts" who could not (and still can't) see that we are on a financial greased pole - the list goes on. If truth is known, it was "Experts" that caused all of this financial turmoil in the first place.

Low Spending Is Taking Toll on Economy
JICWyllie
by JICWyllie  5-1-2008    1
"Growth" is now clearly a meaningless concept. On the necessities side -- food, fuel etc. -- inflation is counted as "growth". (No more food or fuel is being produced or used.) This is balanced against deflation and recession in the discretionary economy, and is interpreted as positive growth. These are two different phenomena and cannot be added together in a meaningful way. Yet achieving this growth is what economics is supposed to be all about. Just another reason why the so-called science of economics is literally nonsense and innumerate to boot.

"No right to educate your own child?"
jatfla
by jatfla  4-6-2008    4
If I had it to do over again, I would definitely homeschool. However, the resources were not so readily available as they are now. Homeschool my grandchildren??....absolutely! They are being indoctrinated, not educated. When save the planet, global warming, recycling, etc...is what I hear when they walk home with me...well, forget it! They are so smart and eager to learn. Reading, writing and arithmetic...add a little musical training, science, compute introduction, etc... But they can't keep it to the basic. The NEA has their agenda, but it is not that of many American parents.

Exciting new Alzheimer's Research
Socratoad
by Socratoad  1-11-2008    6
Prior to injecting the drug, the cognitive ability of the patient was measured. Researchers said he was unable to handle simple arithmetic and could not remember the names or even two animals. Just 10 minutes after he was injected with the new molecule, he was calmer and was able to recall his place of residence.
