POPSHungary's 'forgotten' war victims Back in his living-room, Arpad's three-year-old granddaughter, Jofie, brings me wooden elephants and antelopes to admire and stands quietly listening to our conversation. On the table, Arpad has arranged photographs that he took on his trips east in search of the lost Hungarians. "Maybe that one is your dad," Jofie tells him, wanting so much to be helpful and pointing to a group of men who are holding a cross on a small hill in the city of Baltsi. "That hill," says Arpad, "is made of human bones."

POPSIs Halloween Your Favorite Holiday or Scariest? One of my fav marketers, Seth Godin, takes about why we celebrate Halloween. He turns the blog, as he should, into a revelation about marketing. It makes me wonder why we do celebrate Halloween. It is not my favorite holiday but I know it is a lot of other peoples. Is it yours? When I was a kid, we worried about razor blades in the apples or candy bars. I check my kids candy but I don't know if I subscribe to all the fear either. What is your thoughts on this holiday? Love it? Fear it? Tweet us a reply or share a comment below.

POPSMilitary Service Training Ground For Sexual Predation This article is quite comprehensive in scope and deserves a full reading. A few more paragraphs from it follow this remark. "Yet for decades, in spite of the terrible numbers, the military has managed with astonishing success to get away with responding to grievances like Krause's with silence, or denial, or by blaming "a few bad apples." But when individual soldiers take the blame, the system gets off the hook. And it can be shown that the patterns of military sex crimes are old and widespread -- for generations, military service has transformed large numbers of American boys into sexual predators. So it seems reasonable to ask if perhaps there is something about military culture or training or experience that can be identified as causative, and then, perhaps, changed."

- "Kunden-Profit" ist, was der Kunde will. Apples Erf

POPSTricked out caramel apples Go to the source to see the inside of the apple. Use a melon baller to scoop out the seeds and core from the bottom. Fill that cavity with chocolate (or something else) and plug with a bit of scooped out apple. Then, dip in caramel and topping. Wowzer!

POPSFood of the Week: Apples Tips for preparing apples: Rinse apples under clear running water like you would any fruit. If organic, don't peel unless the recipe you have chosen requires peeled apples. To prevent browning when slicing apples for a recipe, simply put the slices in a bowl of cold water to which a spoonful of lemon juice has been added. For use in future recipes, sliced apples freeze well in plastic bags or containers.

POPS11 Ways To Use A Pumpkin More in the article . If you've never made a fresh pumpkin pie, you are missing out. And, by the way, most canned pumpkin is made of squashes, rather than actual pumpkin. Pumpkin from scratch is a bit of a pain, one has to puree it or it's a bit stringy, but it keeps well in the freezer, so it is worthwhile. I think so, anyway.

POPSrecipe: Adam's scary apples More: A note about the black apples: Lighter colored apples (Granny Smith, Golden Delicious) work well in making the red appear bright and glassy; darker apples like red delicious help the black candy appear as dark as possible. Muy spooky! Also, Adam made one batch with red food coloring and after he had a few red apples he reheated the candy mixture and added black food coloring. Adding black to red will make it darker. He repeated the dipping process. Black food coloring can be found online or at specialty baking stores.

POPSApples and Oranges Yes, as is casting a sighted actor to play a blind character; and casting a homosexual actor to play a heterosexual character. Did that successfully highlight the absurdity of Ms. Bove's comment? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the lovely and talented Marlee Matlin's work, and would hate for her to be overlooked for a role which she would be perfect for, but I think Ms. Bove goes too far. (I singled out Ms. Matlin because she's the only deaf actor I could come up with off the top of my head.)

POPSAutumn is Apple Time Early varieties include the classic Red Delicious, which are striped to solid and red, and have a sweet taste; and the Jonagold, a cross between a Jonathan and a Golden Delicious, and are bright red and can be sweet or slightly tart. Later varieties include Rome, Fuji, Granny Smith, and Jonathan. Romes are a deep red and are slightly sweet. Fuji’s range in color from gold to red and often have red striping, and are great for snacking. Granny Smith apples are green, tart apples that are perfect for baking. Jonathans have light red stripes over deep red or yellow and are slightly tart. For a quick and easy simmered fall punch, combine 2 cups apple juice, 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 2 or 3 cloves. Simmer on the stove for 20 to 30 minutes. Remove cloves before serving. ---------------------------

POPSWhere they grow our junk food It has provided an abundance of cheap calories for a food system that operates by Doritos economics. A bushel of corn produces some 440 two-ounce bags of 99-cent chips. Farmer grosses $3.70 for the bushel of corn, Doritos more than $440.
