Dubai was forced to swallow its pride today and rename the world's tallest building after the ruler of Abu Dhabi " the neighbouring emirate that saved the city-state from financial collapse. The humiliating announcement was made by Dubai’s ruler at the dazzling launch of the $1.5 billion ( 930 million) Burj Dubai, which will now be known as Burj Khalifa, in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. The opening ceremony for the Burj was marked by a dazzling fireworks display that wreathed the tower in stars and smoke. The final height of the tower, which has been shrouded in secrecy, was also revealed to be 2,717ft (828 metres). But the launch, which was intended to be the crowning glory of the emirate's emergence on to the world stage, exposed the reality that Dubai’s achievements are no longer its own while Abu Dhabi is picking up the cheque. Questions are being asked about the Afghani prisoner abuses and the opposition parties are blocking his heavy-handed bills in Parliament, so he's going to stack the Senate with Conservatives (a process he vocally condemned early in his despotic reign) to give him absolute control over the government. That's not the Canadian way; that's taking a page out of Bush's fascist book. If Governor General Michael Jean approves a prorogue, there is going to be a huge outcry, and hopefully, hell to pay.

POPSAnother Bailout – GMAC To Get More Money GMAC says they want to prepare itself to repay the U.S. Government. Is taking more tax payer funds a necessary step before repaying the Government? I don’t know what kind of math GMAC is using to come up with an idiotic statement like that, but if it is the same math they use to balance the books at their retail bank (Ally Bank) then I would run as fast as I could away from that one. The mortgage-related write-downs to be announced as early as this week will affect assets held by ResCap and Ally Bank, GMAC’s online bank. Ally Bank was created after the company received approval in late 2008 to convert to a bank holding company and qualify for government money under TARP. POPSHot Air: Welcome to the Obama Administration’s “New Transparency” I’m sure it is … for analysts and Fannie and Freddie workers, but I’m not sure taxpayers should share that optimism. The report states the U.S. Treasury will receive preferred stock paying 10% dividends and warrants to acquire nearly 80% of the common shares in Fannie and Freddie. However, the Treasury has already loaned $60 billion to Fannie and $51 billion to Freddie. At this point, it’s hard to believe more money is the answer. Maybe the New York Times was right: Democrats plan to talk about deficit reduction in 2010 but not do anything about it for now. Or as President Obama puts it: “Mr. Obama calls it “a false choice” to pit spending to spur the economy against reducing the deficit. His advisers say the president, and American voters, favor both " spending to create jobs in the short term, and commitment to spending discipline and deficit reduction over the long term.”

Hat tip: ABC News Less than two months after 13 Americans were murdered by a militant Islamic fundamentalist, another terrorist attempted to kill several hundred people aboard a jumbo jetliner. The announcement said the device contained PETN (pentaerythritol), which the Justice Department called “a high explosive.” “FBI agents recovered what appear to be the remnants of the syringe from the vicinity of Abdulmutallab’s seat, believed to have been part of the device,” the released added. The government said: “Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, a Nigerian national, boarded Northwest Flight 253 in Amsterdam, Netherlands on December 24, 2009 and had a device attached to his body.

So Illinois is so broke it has prisoners, it has an empty prison, it can't afford to pay to put the inmates in the prison so it releases them and sells out. A Durbin aide said the facility would house federal inmates and no more than 100 detainees from Guantanamo Bay. The facility in Thomson had emerged as a clear front-runner after Illinois officials, led by Durbin, enthusiastically embraced the idea of turning a near-dormant prison over to federal officials. The White House has been coy about its selection process, but on Friday a draft memo leaked to a conservative Web site that seemed to indicate officials were homing in on Thomson. The Thomson Correctional Center was one of several potential sites evaluated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons to potentially house detainees from the Navy-run prison at Guantanamo Bay. Officials with other prisons, including Marion, Ill., Hardin, Mont., and Florence, Colo., have said they would welcome the jobs that would be created by the new inmates. An international team of researchers detected the new planetary systems by combining information collected during years of observations at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the Anglo-Australian Telescope in Australia. The astronomers combed the data looking for minute variations in the starlight caused by gravitational tugs of orbiting planets. "This was not the kind of 'ah-ha' moment where you look into the telescope and see the planet sitting there," Laughlin said. "The signal builds up over time." Refinements in planet-hunting techniques should make detection of Earth-sized planets possible in about a year, he added. "The practical limits for finding terrestrial planets around nearby stars is a lot more optimistic than what was thought to be the case a few years ago," Laughlin said. The newly discovered planets are too close to their parent stars for liquid water to exist on their surfaces, a condition that is believed to be necessary for life. Still, scientists say
