POPSOfficials May Evacuate New Orleans as Gustav Nears If a Category 3 or stronger hurricane comes within 60 hours of the city, New Orleans plans to institute a mandatory evacuation order. Unlike Katrina, there will be no massive shelter at the Superdome, a plan designed to encourage residents to leave. Instead, the state has arranged for buses and trains to take people to safety. Since the storm (Katrina), the Army Corps of Engineers has spent billions of dollars to improve the levee system, but because of two quiet hurricane seasons, the flood walls have never been tested. Floodgates have been installed on drainage canals to stop any storm surge from entering the city, and levees have been raised and in many places strengthened with concrete. Scientists cautioned that the storm's track and intensity were difficult to predict several days in advance. The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals planned to move animals to shelters elsewhere in the state and in Texas.

POPSTaxpayer advocate takes aim at IRS deficiencies Tax reform ought to be the highest priority in this country after universal health care. This report ought to make it very clear our tax system is in need of scrapping and rebuilding the system from scratch. There must be a better way for government to fund itself in a fair and progressive manner which does not place undue burdens upon individuals, businesses and non profit entities, churches and schools.

POPSWe’ll Marry Each Other as Often as Needed I wish I could have clipped the entire article. So I just included as much as I could. I urge you to read the entire piece, as it is absolutely beautiful, humourous, touching and honest. It is entirely apropos at this time, as next week, August 31, my partner Arnold and I are getting legally married here in our home city of Montreal. Same-sex marriage became legal in Canada in 2005. We waited until this year, because Sept 10th shall mark the 25th anniversary of our original unification ceremony we celebrated in Boston in 1983. What better way to renew our vows than to do so while finally getting married legally, in a country that recognizes and honours our relationship?

POPSRed Primer for Children and Diplomats The Order of the October Revolution (Russian: Орден Октябрьской Революции, or Orden Oktyabr'skoy Revolyutsii) was instituted on October 31, 1967, in time for the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution. It was awarded to individuals or groups for services furthering communism or the state, or in enhancing the defences of the Soviet Union. It ranked second amongst the Soviet orders, after the Order of Lenin. Nicholas II of Russia born Nikolay Alexandrovich Romanov (18 May 1868 – 17 July 1918) was the last Tsar of Russia, King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland. Nicholas II ruled from 1894 until his abdication in 1917. His rule ended with the Russian Revolution of 1917 in which he and his family were imprisoned first in the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, then later the Governor's Mansion in Tobolsk. Finally, at the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg, Nicholas and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks on the night of July 17, 1918.
