POPSWhat's in your bottle of "insulin"? preservatives help so the half-life of the product is extended. is there an alternative? they say no, and if there is, they make it hard to get or suspend manufacturing altogether. Why?

POPSExercise in a Pill Previous work with genetically engineered mice in the Evans lab had revealed that permanently activating a genetic switch known as PPAR delta turned mice into indefatigable marathon runners. In addition to their super-endurance, the altered mice were resistant to weight gain, even when fed a high-fat diet that caused obesity in ordinary mice. On top of their lean and mean physique, their response to insulin improved, lowering levels of circulating glucose.

POPSDo you have the right stuff to be a NASA Pillownaut? The effects of lying in bed for months on end aren’t pretty. Our bodies are used to being used. Astronauts and “pillownauts” as some study participants call themselves, experience muscle atrophy and even some mild bone-density loss. They also can experience headaches, nausea and a host of other unpleasant symptoms. It can take astronauts weeks or months to readjust to the Earth’s gravitational force. “If I hadn’t done it, I would have just gotten another IT job, probably,” Archuletta said. But she’s a space lover and wanted to contribute to humanity’s return to the moon and Mars. And maybe do a little something different. “Something unique, something not in an office environment,” she said. “It was a chance to confront stillness in a way.”

POPSSimple Chemical System Created That Mimics DNA May be key to answering questions about how life could emerge. The work, reported in the journal Science, might also be a starting point on the way to exotic new materials that repair themselves or transform in response to their environment.

POPS2.8 Million People Left Behind Despite a year-long effort by the government, broadcasters and cable operators to warn people of the digital-TV switch, about 2.8 million households remained completely unprepared as of Wednesday, according to Nielsen Co. Older Americans were more prepared than the national average, Nielsen found, but younger people and African-American and Hispanic households continued to lag behind. Originally scheduled for February the conversion was postponed until Friday June 11th because Obama and Congress felt that TOO MANY were not prepared. Well guess what those same people were still not prepared. I find the statistics interesting in the groups of people who were least prepared. Apparently these slackers where hoping for yet ANOTHER DELAY. They can not say they were not warned, And yet they still failed to prepare for the inevitable. That seems to be the nations Achilles heal sloth and lack of preparation.

POPSAussies slow to adopt digital TV I tried going digital but the signal from stations was too weak and they kept dropping out. Yet the ads on TV say the opposite. It seems they expect us to embrace it because it is "new". At three hours a week, it won't leave a hole in my life anyway.

POPSDigital TV Doesn't Get the Picture Digital sucks! When it starts breaking up, you're lucky to get one word in four. Analog may have a little snow once in a while, but you can still get the story, not with digital.

POPSDigital TV coupon program hampered from the start Cuellar, director of the Texas Media Empowerment Project in San Antonio, was concerned that the $1.34 billion program would run out of money before the nation's neediest — the poor, elderly and disabled — could apply. For many, she pointed out, free TV is their only connection to the outside world

POPSWhy we should have lower-voltage outlets. This solution is so simple. I've wired houses. Big appliances are already on separate circuits. It seems very practical to simply put the transformer at the service panel and run 5V circuits.

POPSDigital TV Transition Confusing Thousands The FCC reports that tens of thousands of people are calling its consumer help line for advice as some broadcasters transition service to digital spectrum. Expect another wave of confusion around June 12, the new date by which all TV stations must switch over. Of course, the FCC foresaw all this, which is why it set up the help line in the first place.

POPS5 Digital Television Transition Myths
. . . (including many handheld TV devices). Myth #2: I need a new HDTV in order to watch a DTV broadcast. If you're a cable or satellite subscriber, you won't notice a thing when analog television broadcasting ceases. You can continue to use whatever television or other display device you're using now. For the folks who view free local TV via an antenna, the ability to receive and view digital broadcast television signals requires the use of a compatible digital tuner that's either built into the TV or a separate set-top box. Myth #3: The government's TV Converter Box Coupon Program has run out of money/coupons. The government's TV Converter Box Coupon Program Web site is still accepting new applications and will continue to distribute coupons until "the obligation ceiling is reached." Keep in mind that unredeemed coupons are recycled back into the program, so while it may take a longer time to process your request, now compared with a few months ago, . . .
