Stealth Windows update prevents XP repair
travislaborde
by travislaborde  9-28-2007
This stealth update thing is giving me my first "hmmm maybe another OS should be considered" since the Amiga days. By the way, the article gives details of a fix for the problem too.

Free software programs
owlpath
by owlpath  5-3-2007
I am always on the look out for free software programs that are good. This is a site,TinyApps ,I have used many times to find simple, small programs. One program that is very useful is MWSnap. It is a screen capture program that is easy to use after you learn how to use it, hehe!. When you "capture" a screen shot, basically you take a picture of your screen or a section of the screen and save it as a jpg file. One warning! If you start it and capture the entire monitor screen, it is very confusing !!!. I suggest you try capturing a small area first. For the link to the program go to TinyApps.org and look under Graphics, then Screen Capture.

Un(flippin)believable - NEW AMIGAS ARE COMING!
RecordSage
by RecordSage  4-24-2007
I can't believe my eyes - new Amiga boxes are coming out! I had to check the date of the article, just to make sure it wasn't published on April 1 and that the year was current. Wow! I hope they disappoint everyone... boy, this is intriguingly exciting...

Amiga in Seattle (Kent actually)
RecordSage
by RecordSage  4-20-2007
How ironic to wind up with an arena in my back yard named after my favorite computer company of all time, especially considering the roots coming from California, Pennsylvania, Japan, Germany, New York but the arena here in the Seattle area.

Stephen King covers and more as done in old-skool pixel art
Torley
by Torley  3-14-2007
For me, this is an incredible find: it combines my passion for computer graphics with one of my fave authors, Stephen King. These don't appear to have been for any pro production, but the devotion of a fan — Sean Ryan I think — who worked on a Commodore Amiga in Deluxe Paint II to create these works. Inspiring!

F40 Pursuit Simulator - classic Amiga game
Torley
by Torley  3-13-2007
I used to play this all the time when I was a kid... back on my Amiga 500 starter kit. I used to marvel at how smoothly gradiated the sun was, and how it could turn to sunset as the cops pursued you. Now, it looks rough and chunky in comparison, but I can reach my mind back and still remember those halcyon days of youth, with a joystick in my hands...

Shufflepuck Cafe resource for classic Mac games
Torley
by Torley  2-6-2007
Anyone else remember Shufflepuck Cafe? I actually first played it on the Amiga, in glorious 32 colors, but it stands as such a wonderful title involving kinetics, colorful characters, and all-'round great gameplay presented in a lovely atmosphere. This LiveJournal community uses Shufflepuck as a starting point, and has a few choice links to great Mac abandonware sites. Get your retro on!

I like Total Commander a lot - for it's plugins mostly. The Uninstaller plugin for me is reason enough to install Total Commander. I can uninstall software faster than you can pull up the "Add And Remove Programs" dialog. In fact, that's really all I use Total Commander for. Because like this review says - Directory Opus has a much better UI. Where Total Commander is "ugly" DirOpus is "beautiful." And, I'm an old Amiga nut, which is where Directory Opus started :)

Beneath a Steel Sky - freeware adventure game gem
Torley
by Torley  12-17-2006    3
I found out about this a few days ago while doing some more fishing for retrogames: BaSS is a game I've never played before, only heard of. I'm familiar with the classic Sierra and LucasArts games as well as The Longest Journey, and much to my pleasure, this is in a similar vein. The music isn't up to par but the dialog is memorable and the visuals are pretty evocative — not DirectX 10, 3D goodness, but well-crafted nuances from an early age of electronic entertainment. As a 66 MB download, it comes highly recommended!

Darkseed - and more recorded Amiga games
Torley
by Torley  11-4-2006
This game freaked me out when I was younger — the graphics are so terrifying, without being overly gory. Great use of the 32-color palette too. The link is to an archive of recorded Amiga games, played from start to finish. Useful to live through someone else's eyes, if you ever wanted to beat of these but never got the chance (like me).

Personally, I use Directory Opus. It's simply awesome. Of course, I'm an old Amiga nut, and that's where Directory Opus got it's start... :) Also, Total Commander is a very nice alternative - just not as polished, but with a HUGE user community of plugins, like Firefox almost.
