POPSCollege Drinking Debate: 18 or 21? The minimum drinking age in Italy is 16. I've been in bars packed with teens and there was no excess drinking or obnoxious behavior. The only sloppy drunks I saw were two American kids outside of a bar in Florence: one was puking while the other was raving. http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/YouthIssues/1098903340.html

POPS'Beer goggles' are real - it's official As well as changing perceptions of attractiveness, alcohol also encourages us to engage in behaviour we would otherwise avoid. In a study by Robert Leeman of Yale University students reported they were more likely to engage in risky sexual acts after drinking - which could be due to alcohol lowering our inhibitions through a direct effect on the brain or by providing a convenient excuse for such behaviour.

POPSJury Nullification Nullified Young tried to assure the jury that the federal drug laws are constitutional because the Supreme Court has interpreted the commerce clause quite expansively. I'm glad someone is questioning the expansive interpretations some on the bench have about the constitution.

POPSAbsinthe Goes From Banned Drug to Legal Liquor Breaux's research — finally published this spring in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (.pdf) — and that Wired story have helped change absinthe's image from drug to drink. The US has been slowly peeling away its ban, and in March, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau approved the sale of absinthes that were "thujone free" (containing less than 10 parts per million).

POPSStudy: Risk of Alcoholism High in Returning Combat Vets The article includes this statement: Alcohol abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression make up an "unholy trinity" that haunts some combat soldiers, said psychologist William Schlenger of the consulting firm Abt Associates Inc. in Durham, N.C. He was a principal investigator of the influential National Vietnam Veterans' Readjustment Study, but was not involved in the new research. "They have intrusive recollections: 'I keep remembering it, I have nightmares about it, I can't escape it,'" Schlenger said. Vets try to escape the memories through alcohol or drugs, he said. This is a lasting damage to the country that we'll pay for for decades.

POPSUnderage Strip Performance deemed 'artistic' Another example of a society adrift. A 17 yr old girl strips in a BAR serving alcohol and judge finds nothing 'illegal' about this? After reading this story I have to sit here and wonder what the heck happened to common sense and decency and to think there are actually people who do not see the harm this type of behavior has on our society. This one certainly belongs in the Cuckoo's nest.
