Remember Cassette Tapes? These Are Amazing!
sahara
by sahara  10-30-2009    6
Ghost in the Machine: "In this series I showcase a number of portraits of musicians made out of recycled cassette tape with original cassette. Also included are portraits made from old film and reels. The idea comes from a philosopher's (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging." : )

Political Essay From The Mind of Einstein
sahara
by sahara  10-18-2009    1
Moreover, under existing conditions, private capitalists inevitably control, directly or indirectly, the main sources of information (press, radio, education). It is thus extremely difficult, and indeed in most cases quite impossible, for the individual citizen to come to objective conclusions and to make intelligent use of his political rights. (Albert Einstein, 1949)

"I, Too, Am in Favour of Abolishing Large Cities"
sahara
by sahara  10-18-2009    1
More from Einstein: My personal opinion is that those methods are in general preferable which respect existing traditions and habits so far as that is in any way compatible with the end in view. Nor do I believe that a sudden transference of economy into government management would be beneficial from the point of view of production; private enterprise should be left its sphere of activity, in so far as it has not already been eliminated by industry itself by the device of cartelization. There are, however, two respects in which this economic freedom ought to be limited. In each branch of industry the number of working hours per week ought so to be reduced by law that unemployment is systematically abolished. At the same time minimum wages must be fixed in such a way that the purchasing power of the workers keeps pace with production.

Einstein's Essays on Society
sahara
by sahara  10-18-2009
Unknowingly prisoners of their own egotism, they feel insecure, lonely, and deprived of the naive, simple and unsophisticated enjoyment of life. Man can find meaning in life, short and perilous as it is, only through devoting himself to society. The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of evil. (Albert Einstein, 1949)

Mrs Wrigley, a housewife, added: "His vocabulary is amazing. He's able to construct complex sentences. "The other day he said to me, 'Mummy, sausages are like a party in my mouth'." Dr Peter Congdon, who assessed Oscar, said he was a "child of very superior intelligence". "His abilities fall well within the range sometimes referred to as intellectually gifted. He demonstrated outstanding ability," he said. John Stevenage, Mensa's Chief Executive confirmed Oscar had been accepted aged two years, five months and 11 days. "Oscar shows great potential. Converting that potential to achievement is the challenge for his parents and we are delighted that they have chosen to join the Mensa network for support", he said. The youngest British child to join Mensa is Elise Tan Roberts, from Edmonton, North London, at two years, four months and 14 days, with an IQ of 156.

Invisible hand in invisible matter. Dark matter might not exist.
dopesick
by dopesick  10-10-2009
Dr Famaey added, "If we account for our observations with a modified law of gravity, it makes perfect sense to replace the effective action of hypothetical dark matter with a force closely related to the distribution of visible matter." The implications of the new research could change some of the most widely held scientific theories about the history and expansion of the universe. Lead researcher Dr. Gianfranco Gentile at the University of Ghent concludes, "Understanding this puzzling conspiracy is probably the key to unlock the formation of galaxies and their structures." What about NASA's direct proof on dark matter's existance? Broken study? This is actually makes sense, but so far is a little hard to accept. Does anyone have any ideas about this?

Drawings using dirt ? I'm impressed! I love black & white drawings and Scott Wade is very talented. But ....personally, the impermanence of it (his drawings being washed away) would be too hard to take after spending hours on it. Very good thing that his day job is a graphic designer.

Children deficient in sunshine vitamin
gemfemfox
by gemfemfox  8-7-2009    9
And they are fat too. Could their be any correlation with the fact kids no longer play outside? Even in smalltown USA? Crazy. Do your kids bodies and minds a favor, kick their a*ses outside everyday. It was good enough for my parents, and it's good enough for my kids too. There is also strong evidence that cancer patients are more likely, than not, grossly deficient in Vit D. Maybe instead of spending thousands on health care and gym memberships, we should just go outside in the sunshine, sans sunscreen and take a walk.
