Hite-ing Back in 1977

by debbyski  5-29-2008    7
Alanocu did a great clip on the Kinsey Report which got me thinking about Shere Hite and how controversial her report was. Here is one reaction way back in 1977 to it. "Most men approve of premarital intercourse for women—but not too much. Say the authors: "There exists in their minds a vague point where the woman crosses the line from respectability into whoredom." I wonder if that particular attitude has changed since 1977? hmmmmm . . . The good news is that men's preference for performing oral sex on women was growing even then :D

The Perfect Hat For Your Ugly Mug

"You can wear a hat any old time, with any outfit, of any color. But when you want to look particularly sharp, make sure your hat color complements your suit or outfit." The Brown Hat Brown hats look best with brown or green suits or coats. If wearing a dark blue or dark gray suit, a dark brown hat may also look acceptable. The Gray Hat Gray hats are quite versatile and can be paired with black, blue, and dark gray suits and coats. The Blue Hat Wear a blue hat with a blue or gray suit or coat. If pairing a blue suit with a blue hat, the colors must match fairly closely. Alternatively, you can pair a dark blue suit with a light blue hat or vice versa. You can also get away with wearing a blue hat with a light brown or tan suit. The Green Hat Green hats are surprisingly versatile. They look best with tan or light brown suits. But they also accent black, green, and gray suits very nicely.

Chanel No. 1
alanocu
by alanocu  5-29-2008    7
As of February 2008, film biographies of Chanel are in production, with news reports of Barbara Bobulova as the young Chanel, with Shirley McLaine portraying her in later life. There is also a film project said to star Audrey Tautou as the young Coco. Three more projects are said to be in the works: one directed by William Friedkin; one directed by Daniele Thompson; and one to star Demi Moore. During World War II, Coco was a nurse, although her post-war popularity was greatly diminished by her affair with a Nazi officer during the conflict. However, she made her comeback in 1954. Other quotes by Coco Chanel: “Success is often achieved by those who don't know that failure is inevitable.” “"The best color in the whole world, is the one that looks good, on you!” “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

A Photographic Reaction to the Kinsey Report, 1953
alanocu
by alanocu  5-28-2008    12
You probably know that "The Kinsey Reports are two books on human sexual behavior, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (1948) and Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (1953), by Dr. Alfred Kinsey, Wardell Pomeroy and others." "The research astounded the general public and was immediately controversial and sensational. The findings caused shock and outrage, both because they challenged conventional beliefs about sexuality and because they discussed subjects that had previously been taboo." The Purple People of Phoenicia
alanocu
by alanocu  5-23-2008    12
"The fast, non-fading dye was an item of luxury trade. It is believed that the intensity of the purple hue improved, rather than faded, as the dyed cloth aged." "Archaeological data from Tyre indicate that the snails were collected in large vats and left to decompose. This produced a hideous stench that was actually mentioned by ancient authors. Not much is known about the subsequent steps, and the actual ancient method for mass-producing the two murex dyes has not yet been successfully reconstructed; this special "blackish clotted blood" colour, which was prized above all others, is believed to be achieved by double-dipping the cloth, once in the indigo dye of H. trunculus and once in the purple-red dye of M. brandaris." The Phoenician dolls are unrelated to Tyrian purple, I thought it was an interesting addition to the clip.

A Giant Telectroscope Now Links London and New York in real-time

"When the sun illuminated the lens of the Telectroscope next to the Thames this morning, it was, of course, still nighttime in New York. So the screen inside the scope broadcast back only an empty sidewalk silently framed by the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline. But then something miraculous occurred. A police officer and a street cleaner walked into the frame. Stopped. And waved. And all the credit goes to British artist Paul St George. If he had not been rummaging through great-grandpa Alexander's personal effects a few years ago, the Telectroscope might still exist only on paper, hidden away deep inside some old box."

He Took a Polaroid Every Day, Until the Day He Died
alanocu
by alanocu  5-21-2008    7
An investigation turned up the photographer as Jamie Livingston, and he did indeed take a photo every day for eighteen years, until the day he died, using a Polaroid SX-70 camera. He called the project “Photo of the Day” and presumably planned to collect them at some point — had he lived. He died on October 25, 1997 — his 41st birthday. After Livingston’s death, his friends Hugh Crawford and Betsy Reid put together a public exhibit and website using the photos and called it JAMIE LIVINGSTON. PHOTO OF THE DAY: 1979-1997, 6,697 Polaroids, dated in sequence. The physical exhibit opened in 2007 at the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College (where Livingston started the series, as a student, way back when). The exhibit included rephotographs of every Polaroid and took up a 7 x 120 foot space.

At the time of its discovery in June 2005, the planet had the lowest mass of any known extrasolar planet apart from the pulsar planets orbiting PSR B1257+12. Gliese 876 d takes less than two days to complete an orbit, at a distance only one-fiftieth of that between the Earth and the Sun and is the innermost known planet in its planetary system. Due to its low mass it can be categorized as a Super-Earth." This is the Astronomy Picture of the Day for May 21, 2008.

Paradox of the false positive

by alanocu  5-20-2008    3
"Here's how that works: imagine that you've got a disease that strikes one in a million people, and a test for the disease that's 99% accurate. You administer the test to a million people, and it will be positive for around 10,000 of them – because for every hundred people, it will be wrong once (that's what 99% accurate means). Yet, statistically, we know that there's only one infected person in the entire sample. That means that your "99% accurate" test is wrong 9,999 times out of 10,000!" "If we were good at understanding statistics, then here's what would happen when you flew to Las Vegas. You'd step out of McCarran airport, stare down the Strip at all those glittering, palatial casinos and say to yourself, "Holy crap – think of all the suckers who must have lost everything to finance this place!" Instead, our foolish minds are filled with thoughts like, "Man, look at all the money in this town – I'm going to win big!" And another casino is built."

The Crystal Skulls of Mexico, Central and South America
alanocu
by alanocu  5-19-2008    11
"The most obvious answer to the mystery is that native artisans in Latin America or elsewhere crafted the skulls themselves. The Mayans are most often associated with them, although some doubt that they could have made the skulls, and not simply because of the technical conundrum the job poses. One theory holds the Aztecs as a more likely candidate to have created them. Skull imagery figures prominently in Aztec art and religious symbols, and not in that of the Mayans. The Aztecs were also more highly skilled in sculpting with crystal. It could be that the skulls found in Mayan ruins are actually displaced Aztec relics... or, as some suspect, the skulls' origins could be phony. Many skeptics feel that the crystal skulls are probably of a much more recent vintage than their accompanying stories suggest. Since carbon-dating only works on organic substances, it is impossible to determine just how old a crystal skull is."

Origami: 15 Most Amazing Paper Sculptures

History: Origami originated in China as "Zhe Zhi" in the first or second century AD, and it reached Japan in the sixth century. Over the next few hundred years, origami became familiar in many aspects of Japanese culture. By the Heian period of Japanese history, origami was a significant aspect of Japanese ceremony. Samurai warriors would exchange gifts adorned with noshi, a sort of good luck token made of folded strips of paper. Origami butterflies were used during the celebration of Shinto weddings to represent the bride and groom. In the 1960's the art of origami began to spread out, first with modular origami and then with various movements developing, including the kirikomi. http://www.answers.com/topic/origami?cat=technology thanks to alanocu and einbar>
