POPS Veterans Day 2009: Thank you
They are casualties of war… and as far as I’m concerned, Sergeant Kimberly Munley, who took their cowardly attacker down, is a veteran today. The terrorist enemy doesn’t have a formal chain of command that can sign an armistice, they don’t muster on clearly defined battlefields, and they’re quite happy to benefit from the efforts of deranged fanboys. If we don’t stand behind our professional soldiers, and give them the tools to do their jobs now, we will all become soldiers before this enemy is defeated. Somewhere in the world tomorrow, an American soldier will ring in the eleventh hour of the eleventh day with gunfire. Another will arrive home after an honorable tour of duty, perhaps passing brothers and sisters in arms saying farewell to their families. A mother’s tears will fall on a letter from the far side of the world. Old veterans will spend a beautiful afternoon watching children play beneath the flag they raised at Anzio, Guadalcanal, Incheon, or Khe Sanh.

Everyone out!" said Carol Pancaldo, 40, who from her 28th floor office had watched the World Trade towers tumble nearly eight years ago. "I looked out and saw the tail of a plane. So I just picked up my bag and left, ran for the stairwell." The walk down the 28 flights of stairs with about 150 of her colleagues seemed to take "forever," Pancaldo said, because nobody knew what was happening outside. "You're thinking," Oh God, don't crash into my building," said Pancaldo, from Elmwood Park, an analyst for Kuehne & Nagel. She was outraged when she learned of the photo shoot. "Really, though, after 9/11? That's not a joke, that's not funny," she said.

A total of 25,000 women applied, and 1,074 earned their wings. The WASP fliers originally were civil service-paid and were disbanded on Dec. 20, 1944. In 1977, Congress declared the WASPs veterans of World War II."

POPSGates Punts Tanker Fight To Next Administration In a news release that cited “mistakes and missteps” by the Defense Department, Gates said he was terminating competition for the $35 billion contract to give the next administration full flexibility to decide how to handle the process. “Over the past seven years the process has become enormously complex and emotional — in no small part because of mistakes and missteps along the way by the Department of Defense,” Gates said. “It is my judgment that in the time remaining to us, we can no longer complete a competition that would be viewed as fair and objective in this highly charged environment.”

POPSMy cousin receives the Army Commendation Medal Army Commendation Medal He is part of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit in Iraq which has "cleared out more than 250 improvised explosive devices and conducted more than 700 combat missions." From another Article: "The group of airman stationed in Baghdad -- Anthony Homerlein, David Kuric , John Wawrzynski and Scott White -- played key roles in the hunt for two kidnapped soldiers in June, "ultimately disarming several booby traps directly targeting responders attempting to recover and repatriate the remains" of the soldiers." I am definitely proud to be related to him, and hope he continues to be safe; he just re-enlisted for another 4 years.

POPSConcentrating on Iran's nuclear plant By signing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, opened for signature in 1968, 189 states committed themselves to non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament (!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and peaceful use of nuclear energy. There are contractual partners (e.g. the U.S.) that don't fulfill their commitments. Instead of contractually disarming their nuclear weapons, they develop new ones, modernize their arsenals, their launcher systems, missiles, airforce, and submarine boats, and thus they arouse greediness of other states. Why should we be active against Iran, not exactly knowing whether and to what extent it infringed the Non-Proliferation Treaty, while we keep mum about contractual partners who are defaulting.
