Republiucan Health Bill
kareval
by kareval  11-4-2009    1
“As Leader Boehner has made clear, our proposal will focus on the No. 1 concern of the American people—reducing health care costs, and we do it at a price tag our nation can afford,” said spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier. “Our proposal will help struggling middle-class families and small businesses by increasing access to affordable, high-quality health care,” Ferrier said. It also includes a ban on any “federal funding for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or threat to the life of the mother.” Of course, in true Dem fashion, they responded to the Republican bill with this profound and poignant comment: It’s “insubstantial.” and…

Hope, Change, Peace, Universal Health Care…Oh…and Alien Invasion
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2009    9
ABC "V" TV SERIES PILOT PROMO TRAILER http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQoSCEMzJYE Kenneth Johnson, who wrote and directed the 1983 miniseries (it spawned a sequel and then a regular network series over the next two years), took his inspiration from a 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel called It Can’t Happen Here that depicted an imaginary fascist takeover of the United States. The aliens in the original V were patterned after Nazis, and, just in case anyone missed the point, an elderly Jewish character who was a Holocaust survivor periodically hammered on the similarities. But ABC’s series takes aim not at a German dictator from the misty past but a sitting " and popular " U.S. president.

Murderous US drones condemned by UN.
beanz
by beanz  10-31-2009    4
Americans who are confused by the grotesque transformation of the modest aim of capturing a few bad men into a conflagration that has destroyed the lives of millions echo the Guardian of the 1920s, which asked why the British government had to send "all this machinery, all these forces...if we were establishing a political system on the basis of popular consent?" Without distinguishing between drones that protect our troops and those that drop bombs and hover menacingly over an occupied people, The Economist taunts, "like them or not, drones are here to stay." Now, who are the terrorists here and which is the rogue state ?

Evidence vs Dogma
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  10-5-2009    3
This clip pretty well sums up the point. Fundamentalists simply don't realize how abjectly stupid they sound when they constantly parrot the religious right mantra that evolution is "only a theory". No matter how often they hear that they are wrong in their use of the word theory they keep on trying to use the same old tired argument. They truly are ignorant in the manner in which they ignore what is being said. As the article clipped say, they literally stick their fingers in their ears and go la, la, la. How pathetic.

'Fear detector' being developed that will be able to sniff out terrorists
foxyarse
by foxyarse  11-1-2009    1
Evidence that the smell of fear is real was uncovered by US scientists last year who studied the underarm secretions of 20 terrified novice skydivers. The researchers found that people appear to respond unconsciously to the sweat smell of a frightened person. Scientists at City University London now hope to develop security sensor systems that can detect the human fear pheromone. Team leader Professor Tong Tun told The Engineer magazine: 'The challenge lies in the characterisation and identification of the specific chemical that gives away the signature of human fear, especially the fear in relation to criminal acts.'

U.S. Health Insurance Price Fixing!
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-15-2009    3
Like the bank scams on Wall St. and elsewhere much of it happen when lawmakers, like George Bush especially, removed rules and regulations that allowed banks to sell products that had no real value or sell default insurance when they didn't have the cash to pay off. Like a lot of politics it's not Left vs. Right -- it's the SuperRich exploiting the taxpayers and middle classes and getting special advantages for themselves. Now this has been revealed in the U.S. Health Care Insurance business. It's been revealed --- after months and months of discussion (and previous years of efforts) that this business has an exemption from laws about price fixing and other business collusions.! Dang! It took us this long to find out! It's been like this for all our lifetime! (most of us). They make the biggest bucks --- they make the greatest profit of any USA business -- and they have and keep this exemption to fair play rules that would require fair play competition! We need to restore f

UN Signals Delay in Climate Change Treaty
merrie
by merrie  10-28-2009
But he indicated that Copenhagen most likely won't produce a treaty, but instead will push governments as far as they can go on the content of an agreement. "The secretary-general believes that we must maintain the political momentum established by the 101 heads of state and government who attended the climate change summit and continue to aim for an ambitious, politically binding agreement in Copenhagen that would chart the way for future post-Copenhagen negotiations that lead to a legally binding global agreement," Pasztor said.

Climate 'Debt' Transfers Billions To Developing Countries
merrie
by merrie  10-22-2009    1
But as much as anything else, the Copenhagen treaty calls for the payment by rich countries of what can probably best be described as climate reparations. It would be "impossible to craft and draft" a detailed plan to effectively combat climate change in time for December. "That is not possible. But it is also not necessary," Mr. De Boer said. "I think what Copenhagen has to achieve is a basic political understanding." "By 2020," the treaty insists "the scale of financial flows to support adaptation in developing countries must be at least US$67-billion in the range of US$70-to US$140-billion" every year. If Ottawa signs on to Copenhagen, the size of our resource-based export economy means Canada may pay more dearly for the UN's latest climate-change arrangement than almost any other country on the planet. And in the end, because it may only shift carbon-intensive production from cleaner countries to less-efficient ones, the entire exercise may do very little . . .

Every time the little bear cub moved, I heard her cry with pain
JackieDel
by JackieDel  10-23-2009    2
Trembling at the prospect of each blow from the stick, each rough pull of the rope, she is forced to wander the dusty roads, standing and swaying on her hind legs on command. She tires easily from her poor diet, pants with thirst in the oppressive heat, shakes with fear and exhaustion. Yet this bear cub dare not stop dancing, and she must do so again and again. This story is typical of the plight of many bear cubs in India. Sadder still, over 50% of these beautiful little creatures do not even survive the journey to 'market'. They simply die in cages en route, from starvation, dehydration and trauma. That's why these bears desperately need your support. WSPA is working with the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) to stop this barbaric practice. Our aim is to halt it at the source, and your help is vital in helping us stop this cruelty.

AIM’s Kincaid Urges Fox News to Quit Shilling for Terrorists and Cop-Killer Apologist

Kincaid will also press Murdoch and his board about the publication by Harper Collins of Mark Rudd's terrorist memoir, Underground: My Life With SDS and the Weathermen, about his days in the Weather Underground. Rudd has said he got a $50,000 advance and that while some went to his agent, "the rest went up my nose for coke..." One of the members of Murdoch's board is Professor Viet Dinh, a former Bush counter-terrorism official who had fled Vietnam as a child when Rudd's communist comrades took over South Vietnam in the wake of the U.S. military withdrawal. The meeting of News Corporation, the parent of Fox News and Harper Collins, will be held October 16 at 10 a.m. at the W New York Hotel, 541 Lexington Avenue. Sen. Byrd Challenges Obama's Afghanistan Surge, the Forgotten Bin Laden
blueridge
by blueridge  10-16-2009    4
"The reason for the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan has become lost, consumed in some broader scheme of nation-building" Then point blank: "I am compelled to ask: Does it really take 100,000 U.S. troops to find Osama bin Laden? If al-Qaida has moved to Pakistan, what will these troops sent to Afghanistan add to the effort to 'defeat' al-Qaida?" Can anyone answer that, straight up? In other words, it's contrary to their own propaganda. Will Obama listen to him? : Do recall Sen. Byrd's famous "The Truth Will Emerge" speech opposing war with Iraq --which is now entirely vindicated. mark my words, the calculated intimidation that we see so often of late by the "powers that be" will only keep the loyal opposition quiet for just so long. Because eventually, like it always does, the truth will emerge. And when it does, this house of cards, built of deceit, will fall.

Obama Quietly Deploying 13,000 More US troops to Afghanistan
merrie
by merrie  10-14-2009    1
In addition to the deployments under way, McChrystal has also requested an extra 40,000 troops he says are necessary to prevent the country falling into the hands of the Taliban. The Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai, today expressed support for McChrystal's request. "I'm fully behind him for what he's seeking in this report," Karzai told ABC's Good Morning America. As part of the internal debate, the US defence secretary, Robert Gates, who is cautiously supporting McChrystal, is due to meet later today the vice-president Joe Biden, who is opposed to the troop increase and favours a shift in priority to tracking down al-Qaida in Pakistan. A decision on McChrystal's troop request appears to have been postponed for a few weeks. Any extra troops will come as a result of a parallel reduction in the number of US troops in Iraq. A US military planner told the Army Times: "We've increased forces in Afghanistan before we've reduced forces in Iraq in a meaningful way.
