POPSCheck out what I just bought...no check out what i just bought!! If this doesn't epitomize our consumption driven society, then i don't know what does. I don't typically root against anyone, but i really really hope this service doesn't take off. The idea of a society that's currently overwhelmed with debt and growing unemployment embracing a social network that's all about what we're buying just doesn't sit well with me.

POPSBackupify: Online Account Backup "Free Forever For A Limited Time"by
merrie Yesterday 12:20 AM

Backupify is currently offering free unlimited accounts to anyone who signs up before January 31st. I confirmed that these free accounts will remain free forever even after their new pricing scheme goes into effect. You also may want to consider that the Backupify service needs your login information for each of the accounts it is going to perform automatic backups on. If, for some reason your Backupify account were ever compromised it could lead to your other accounts being compromised as well. Backupify only stores physical passwords for certain sites that require it such as Gmail. With other sites they only store the password token or cookie that is necessary to login to your account. In any case Backupify states that they, "use advanced encryption methods to keep your login credentials safe."

POPS370 Passwords You Shouldn’t (And Can’t) Use On Twitter I would guess that many of these passwords were taken from published lists of passwords used when cracking accounts. If you currently use passwords which resemble any of these listed below, I'd encourage you to change them as soon as possible.

POPSHarder to Buy US Treasuries Shanghai Daily China's State Administration of Foreign Exchange reaffirmed this month that the dollar stands secure as the anchor of the currency reserves it manages, even as the country seeks to diversify its investments. In a discussion on the global role of the dollar, Zhu told an academic audience that it was inevitable that the dollar would continue to fall in value because Washington continued to issue more Treasuries to finance its deficit spending. He then addressed where demand for that debt would come from. "The United States cannot force foreign governments to increase their holdings of Treasuries," Zhu said, according to an audio recording of his remarks. "Double the holdings? It is definitely impossible." "The US current account deficit is falling as residents' savings increase, so its trade turnover is falling, which means the US is supplying fewer dollars to the rest of the world," he added. http://bit.ly/5fUxK0

POPS How Junk Debts affect Credit Reports and Scores Credit account holders have to wait for at least seven years before their bad debts will fall off from their credit reports. A credit account holder has to be patient enough to wait for their bad debts to fall off before they can take steps in increasing their FICO score and their general credit worthiness rating. The recent debts of the credit account holders have to qualify for the out of statute of their debt agreement.

POPSThe Something Awful/Paypal fiasco
More: I'm not going to tell people to close their Paypal accounts. I'm not going to say all their actions were completely unwarranted. I'm just presenting my experience with them and will allow you to draw your own conclusions. However, I harbor a fundamental disagreement with their business practice of assuming all their clients are filthy criminals who must repeatedly prove their innocence to a series of unmanned servers and computer systems. I do not support their ability to freeze entire accounts, take money from whoever they want at whatever time they want, and impose whatever arbitrary rules and regulations they deem necessary without having to answer to any organization. Every single cent in every single Paypal account is earning their company ungodly amounts of interest in their central bank account. They offer users credit cards and the chance to put your money into interest-generating accounts. So exactly why are they not under banking and FDIC rules again?

POPSPalin's Father: She Left Hawaii Because Asians Made Her Uncomfortable I don't like Sarah Palin, but I think Palin's father mixed his words up or was misquoted. This particular quote makes a whole lot of sense to me if "they" refers to Sarah Palin and white people, rather than Asians and Pacific islanders. In universities and colleges in Hawaii, white students are a minority, and they tend to be discriminated against quite often by the locals, so I can see how Sarah Palin would feel like part of the minority and be a bit intimidated. So I think Sarah Palin's father meant to say, "Sarah Palin felt like part of the minority as a result of the discriminatory nature of the locals, so she came home." Carry along... nothing noteworthy here.

POPSBrits Could Be Given a Personal 'Carbon Allowance' If their "carbon account" hits zero, they would have to pay to get more credits. Those who are frugal with their carbon usage will be able to sell their unused credits and make a profit. Lord Smith will call for the scheme to be part of a "Green New Deal" to be introduced within 20 years when he addresses the agency's annual conference on Monday. An Environment Agency spokesman said only those with "extravagant lifestyles" would be affected by the carbon allowances. He said: "A lot of people who cycle will get money back. It will probably only be bankers and those with extravagant lifestyles who would lose out." However, some have criticised the move as "Orwellian" and say it will have a detrimental impact on business. Ruth Lea, an economist from Arbuthnot Banking Group, told the Daily Mail: "This is all about control of the individual and you begin to wonder whether this is what the green agenda has always been about. It's Orwellian.

POPSAn Open Letter to the Council of the American Physical Society Studies of a variety of natural processes, including ocean cycles and solar variability, indicate that they can account for variations in the Earth’s climate on the time scale of decades and centuries. Current climate models appear insufficiently reliable to properly account for natural and anthropogenic contributions to past climate change, much less project future climate. The APS supports an objective scientific effort to understand the effects of all processes – natural and human --on the Earth’s climate and the biosphere’s response to climate change, and promotes technological options for meeting challenges of future climate changes, regardless of cause. POPS10 Amazing Facts About Worldwide Water Use
More facts: Since 1950, water usage in the United States has risen 127 percent. If you shorten your showers by just a single minute, you can save approximately 700 gallons of water in a month. Letting the tap run when you brush your teeth wastes up to 4 gallons of water every time. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. It takes an average of 300 gallons to water your lawn. During the summer, this can account for almost half of your water usage. Another wasteful desert endeavor, the proposed Waveyards water park in Mesa, Arizona will require up to 100 million gallons of groundwater every year in an area that receives a mere 8 inches of rainfall in that time. This last is particularly insane. All the Western states are in desperate need of water for crops and other basic uses. The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea. Salmon spawning grounds have almost disappeared and major animal (as we

POPSU.S.Troop Funds $2.6 Billion Taken From Guns and Ammunition For "Pet Projects"
Sen. Tom Coburn, Oklahoma Republican, called the transfer of funds from Pentagon operations and maintenance "a disgrace." "The Senate is putting favorable headlines back home above our men and women fighting on the front lines," he said in a statement. RELATED STORIES: • Michigan town lobbies for Gitmo transfers • Top Treasury posts stay empty in financial crisis • VA Dept. hospitals botched treatments Mr. Wheeler, who conducted the study, compared the Obama administration's requests for funds with the $636 billion spending bill that the Senate passed. He discovered that senators added $2.6 billion in pet projects while spending $4 billion less than the administration requested for fiscal 2010, which began Oct. 1. Mr. Wheeler said that senators took most of the cash for the projects from the "operations and maintenance" or O&M accounts. "These are the accounts that pay for troop training, repairs, spares and supplies for vehicles, weapons, ships and planes,

POPSHigh court says California can't raid transit funds More: In their latest budget action, the governor and the Legislature approved a plan in July to close a $24 billion deficit, in part by siphoning $138 million from the public transit account to the Department of Developmental Services to pay for transporting developmentally disabled persons to regional centers. The July plan also counted on taking $254 million from public transit to repay transportation bond debt payments. In addition, the plan counted on shifting $622 million in transit funds to the general fund to pay for the previous year's debt service. The refusal of the Supreme Court to hear the appeal could push California's precariously balanced budget immediately into the red. Before losing this lawsuit, the state was already $200 million short.

POPSHow to Send Donations to Victims of Typhoon Ondoy Hurricane Katrina poured 250 millimeters of rain over New Orleans in 2005 with catastrophic results… but compare this to Typhoon Ondoy (international code name: Ketsana), which dumped a record 455 millimeters of rain in Quezon City over a 24-hour period. As a result, a large portion of the metropolis were flooded, with the waters reaching six meters in depth in some areas. Our kababayans desperately need your help. Every little bit counts.
