Aww it didn't clip properly! If you enter your birth date and the country of your choice find out what was number 1 on the the day you were born. My number 1 was "The Battle Of New Orleans" by Johnnie Horton in the US and in the UK "Roulette" by Russ Conway. (I'm 21 and a bit)

a Uni Verse in Black and White
syncopath
by syncopath  11-22-2009    1
Yes, I know this road will take me nowhere There's no reason I should go there I should turn and walk away. I know every pebble on the path As I knew coming back Would only bring me sadness Still I stay, what can I do or say To end this love's enchantment I deny it, I avoid it It bewitches every single step I take With the same sad facts and sorrows Like an album of old photos I can't bring myself to put away Still the fool I was so long ago I look for answers where I know I've only found despair before. I relive the days of madness Sleepless nights, the poems, the sadness, Still I cannot turn away There's more for me to say This is my sin. I bring them down into the light These photographs in black and white Yes, that's the way it always starts I add a sonnet to my sad collection Words of sorrow and dejection Etched upon an aching heart. Another sonnet for my sad collection Full of sorrow and dejection To abuse my broken heart. (English version b

Disarming the Velvet Revolution
dl211
by dl211  11-18-2009    4
I felt sick to my stomach. But then, communism in any country did not enhance people's characters. It deformed them. Everybody tried to survive as best as they could, sometimes compromising their own values and dignity. I do not know how that person feels today. Perhaps there is even shame and regret. When I look back I do not regret being born in a communist country. Yes, we were deprived of freedom and many other things. But it was an intense life experience which taught me to appreciate what I have later in my life. I also feel privileged that I lived through and participated in some of the most important and exciting historical events of the 20th century. The only regret I have is that my father indeed did not live to experience it. He died of cancer in 1982.

Displays of the Dead
sahara
by sahara  10-28-2009
Some of these sites result from a phenomenon that has naturally (or supernaturally?) mummified the dead, while others consist of artful arrangements of bones and skulls done by a creative monk in his spare time. In addition to such collections of human remains, many saints whose bodies have been miraculously preserved are on display in churches. (There's also a Buddhist example of the miracle in Siberia.) Such displays of the dead certainly appeal to travelers with a taste towards the macabre, but they can also provide reflective travelers with a powerful reminder of the impermanence of life. Whatever your reason for checking out the dead on display, the sites below are widely recognized as among the best in the world. Also listed are individual preserved bodies of saints and other famous figures. More info here: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2009/02/sicily-crypts/gill-text

Oct. 23,1983 Lebanese Terrorists Bomb the Marine Barracks in Beirut
merrie
by merrie  10-24-2009    2
. . with Syria. Although the United States had mounted two previous successful peacekeeping operations in Lebanon in 1958 and earlier in 1982 (to facilitate the evacuation of P.L.O. forces from Beirut that had been defeated by Israel), the ignominious end of the MNF intervention brought disastrous consequences. The failure of the peacekeeping mission led to renewed fighting between Lebanese factions and the ascendancy of Hezbollah, backed by Iran and Syria. Moreover, the Marine barracks bombing, which was the deadliest terrorist attack against Americans before the 9/11 attacks, later inspired Osama bin Laden, who viewed the United States as a “paper tiger” because of its rapid withdrawal of peacekeeping forces from Lebanon and Somalia after suffering casualties. Al Qaeda members were later dispatched to Hezbollah training camps in Lebanon, according to the 9/11 Commission Report (p. 68). Posted October 23rd, 2009 in American Leadership.

Happy (belated) 95th birthday to Jack LaLanne!
Lexica
by Lexica  10-8-2009    1
More: The seeming futility of shaping up the world does not daunt him. "I never think about that," LaLanne says. "I think about things that I can improve." One thing he can always improve is himself. LaLanne works out two hours a day, mostly swimming and lifting weights… "I work at living," he says, leaning close and squeezing an arm. "Most people work at dying. Dying's easy." One of LaLanne's most effective sales devices has been his amazing feats of strength. When Arnold Schwarzenegger came to America in 1968 and became an instant sensation on the Southern California muscle scene, LaLanne challenged the kid to a duel at Muscle Beach. The Austrian Oak was 21; the Oakland Oak was 54. "I beat him in chin-ups and push-ups," LaLanne says. "He said, 'That Jack LaLanne's an animal! I was sore for four days. I couldn't lift my arms!' " At age 70, handcuffed, LaLanne towed 70 loaded boats 1.5 miles in Long Beach Harbor.

House Votes To Expand Hate Crime Laws
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-8-2009
The proposed expansion would include crimes based on gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. It eases restrictions on federally protected activities. The FBI says there are some 8,000 hate crimes reported around the country in a year. More than half of those are motivated by racial bias. Next most frequent are crimes based on religious bias at around 18 percent and sexual orientation at 16 percent. Hate crimes occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her membership in a certain social group, usually defined by race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability, nationality, age, gender, gender identity, or political affiliation. "Hate crime" generally refers to criminal acts which are seen to have been motivated by hatred of one or more of the listed conditions. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters.

Countdown: Senators Opposed to "Socialized" Health Insurance Voted for "Socialized" Property Insuran
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-3-2009    3
But each of them voted just last year in support of government-run insurance, that insurance however protects property. It is the National Flood Insurance Program created in 1968, because the free market decided it could not make money on that unpredictable risk called flooding. Government-run flood insurance is sold through private insurance companies but it is backed by the government and the government assumes all risk. Unlike the public option which relies on customer premiums, government flood insurance gets a subsidy—also known as a handout—from the government and it is mandatory for some people. So given all the shouting over a public option, who could vote for mandatory taxpayer subsidized, anti- free market socialized flood insurance run by government bureaucrats? Every single politician I just named and most of Congress. Charles Boustany of Louisiana, along with 44 other Republicans, including going bipartisan on September 27th, 2007 to vote yea on the Flood Insurance Refo

The Paris Review Interview Archive "Since 1953, when the first issue of the magazine appeared with an interview of E. M. Forster, our Q&A encounters with the great writers of our times have come to be recognized as a sort of literary genre unto themselves: the Paris Review interview. More than fifty years—and more than three hundred interviews—later, the archive continues to grow with each new issue of the magazine. In November 2006, the first volume of a four-book set of The Paris Review Interviews was celebrated by reviewers across the English-speaking world. In tandem with this publishing project, we offer here online a complete index of every interview ever published, searchable by author and by date—as well as a substantial sampling of the archive’s finest interviews, posted in their entirety. Taken together, these conversations with novelists, poets, playwrights, essayists, biographers, journalists, and critics constitute what Salman Rushdie calls “the finest available inqui
