The Downside of Optimism

The Next Renaissance
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-16-2008    2
The next renaissance (if there is one)—the phenomenon we're talking about or at least around here is not about the individual at all, but about the networked group. The possibility for collective action. The technologies we're using—the biases of these media—cede central authority to decentralized groups. Instead of moving power to the center, they tend to move power to the edges. Instead of creating value from the center—like a centrally issued currency—the network creates value from the periphery.

Forecasts for the 25 Years...
balthazarus
by balthazarus  10-6-2008
From the page: "A Crisis or an Opportunity? What Makes the Difference? The critical difference is whether you are prepared. If you’re aware of possible developments… if you see changes coming… you can take action and prepare yourself. In a rapidly changing world, new opportunities are emerging everywhere. If you get an advance notice of these possible changes, you can be ready. You can ride these waves of change to benefit your career, your business, your family and your investments." Why not changing ourselves as well? it seems as if all that will come should not affect us on deep levels, but why? part of preparation is accepting the changing of human that may come.

Was Frontline Documentary Edited to Reflect Health Insurance Industry Interests?
ratilfar
by ratilfar  4-4-2009    6
And the film didn't present Reid's bottom line for health care reform – don't let health insurance companies profit from selling basic health insurance. They can sell for-profit insurance for extras – breast enlargements, botox, hair transplants. But not for the basic health needs of the American people. Instead, the film that aired Monday pushed the view that Americans be required to purchase health insurance from for-profit companies.

Paying For Universal Health Coverage
debbyski
by debbyski  6-7-2009    4
“Just think about what battles we could be fighting instead of fighting this misguided war,” President Obama YES! Look what we could have provided our citizens without this blood for oil war. Tell me why taxes aren't more of a damn moral issue. I'll tell you why, pure greed and there's nothing Christian about that at all. Too many American's want a free ride. They want safe highways to zip around on but they don't want to pay for the construction or maintenance on them. They want schools and libraries for their kids, parks for their family picnics, police and fire departments to protect their homes, but they don't wanna dig in their own damn pockets to make them available. Well, GUESS WHAT? Community don't work like that, our government costs money, and I want to see it for the betterment of our citizens--and that means comprehensive health care.

American Political Identity and Policy Orientation
dulios

A nation that is evenly split in its political identity is decidedly center-left in its policy orientation: • By a margin of almost nine to one, Americans agree that “government investments in education, infrastructure, and science are necessary to ensure America’s long-term economic growth,” (79 percent agree, 12 percent neutral, 9 percent disagree). • More than three in four Americans (76 percent) also agree with the president’s argument that “America’s economic future requires a transformation away from oil, gas, and coal to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.” • Nearly three in four Americans believe that “government regulations are necessary to keep businesses in check and protect workers and consumers,” (73 percent agree, 15 percent neutral, 12 percent disagree). • Nearly two in three Americans (65 percent) agree that “the federal government should guarantee affordable health coverage for every American.”

Long-distance demonstration of solar-powered wireless power transmission achieved
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  9-17-2008    4
In the longer term, with sufficient investments in space infrastructure, space solar power can be built from materials from space. The full environmental benefits of space solar power derive from doing most of the work outside of Earth's biosphere. With materials extraction from the Moon or near-Earth asteroids, and space-based manufacture of components, space solar power would have essentially zero terrestrial environmental impact. Only the energy receivers need be built on Earth.

When thoughts of death turn to environmentalism

"These self-esteem investments can thus transform the protection of the natural world into an existentially relevant behaviour which can similarly function to mitigate concerns with our vulnerability to death."

Microsoft Millionaire: Why I Should Pay More Taxes
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  8-6-2009    8
He wants to rescind the tax breaks given to the wealthy to help the U.S.!? I’ll bet he’ll be banned from the country club and a place at the round table now. The Bush-era tax cuts gave $700 billion in breaks over eight years to those with annual incomes more than $200,000. The U. S. borrowed money to make these tax cuts possible, even as our schools, infrastructure, research institutions and social services were in need of new investments. “Taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized and healthy society. Those of us who have disproportionately benefited from public investments have a responsibility to pay back our society so that others can have similar opportunities.” I like this guy. He says “it is just and fair that our generation make comparable investments in our future to ensure that America continues to offer our children and grandchildren the same kind of opportunities it offered me.”

Letter to Nancy Pelosi, from Dennis Guthrie, Attorney
willhelm
by willhelm  8-30-2009
...I find it interesting that you and your husband are multi-millionaires with much of your fortune being made as a result of your “public service”. You have controlled legislation that has enhanced your husband’s investments both on and off shore. At the same time you redistributed the wealth of others. Our system of a free market economy is being destroyed by the likes of you, Harry Reid, and now our President. You ride around in a Gulfstream airplane at the tax payer’s expense while criticizing the presidents of companies who produced something for the economy. You add nothing to the economy of the United States; you only subtract therefrom. I would like to suggest that you return to the city of fruitcakes and nuts and eat your husband’s canned tuna and pineapple produced by illegal immigrants and by workers who have been excluded from the protection that 90% of the legal workers in the United States have. I await your defeat in the next election with glee.

I sure hope they can pull this off. The introduction of a rechargeable electric car has the potential to be a game changer for our economy and global dynamics. I would imagine that the response to this in the market would dwarf that received thus far by hybrids. We are talking about truly revolutionizing one of the most important industries in the world. And don't forget the ripple effect this will have by creating the need to make enormous investments in our national electricity grid.

The Ties That Bind - Hussein, Bin Laden, BCCI and Bush
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  4-7-2007
When the BCCI scandal began to break in the late 1980s, the Sr. Bush administration did what it could to sit on it. The Justice Department went after the culprits -- was virtually forced to -- only after New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau did. But evidence about BCCI's broader links exist in numerous U.S. and international investigations. Now could be a good time to take another look at the BCCI-Osama-Saddam-Saudi-Bush connection.
