A lesson in media manipulation.

This week I received an email from a group described as the Never Before Campaign. They were promoting a video which promised to “summarize the Palestinian cause in two minutes.” It sounded interesting, so I clicked on the link and watched.

What I saw was a Palestinian propaganda film, pure and simple.

You might be thinking: C’mon, from your pro-Israel perspective, the film was propaganda, but from the perspective of a Palestinian supporter it was a fair presentation of the issues.

In order to determine which view is legitimately true, we first need to define: What is propaganda?

Propaganda is based on the premise that people are emotional. Propaganda typically presents little or no facts, using techniques like selective omission and over-simplification to play on sentiments and feelings. Propaganda uses highly-charged images and slogans to produce an emotional, rather than a rational, response.

A newly built and unoccupied 13-story apartment building in Shanghai fell over with no apparent provocation. Miraculously, only one person died in the near-catastrophe.

The building fell over in one piece. Footage of the collapse on Hong Kong’s Cable Television showed the structure in a muddy construction site, pilings still visible at its base.

Construction was nearly complete on the luxury high-rise, situated fashionably near the Dianpu River on the outskirts of Shanghai.

No cause of the crash was immediately obvious. Some have speculated that the crash was the result of issues with nearby flood prevention from the Dianpu River.

Other observers claim that the collapse is indicative of widespread use of sub-par building materials and shoddy construction in China, a major concern in the rapidly urbanizing country. Last year, a steel arch on a bridge collapsed and killed seven, and a crane fell and killed five kindergartners.

Honeybee mobs overpower hornets

Honeybee hordes use two weapons - heat and carbon dioxide - to kill their natural enemies, giant hornets.

Japanese honeybees form "bee balls" - mobbing and smothering the predators.

This has previously been referred to as "heat-balling", but a study has now shown that carbon dioxide also plays a role in its lethal effectiveness.

In the journal Naturwissenschaften, the scientists describe how hornets are killed within 10 minutes when they are trapped inside a ball of bees.

Japanese giant hornets, which can be up to 5cm long, are voracious predators that can devastate bees' nests and consume their larvae.

But, if the bees spot their attacker in time, they mount a powerful defence in the form of a bee ball. This study found that the heat inside the bee ball alone was not enough to reliably kill the hornets.
