Scientists Make Radio Waves Travel Faster Than Light
chestnut501
by chestnut501  6-30-2009    8
A Los Alamos National Laboratory gadget, called a polarization synchrotron, combines radio waves and a rapidly spinning magnetic field, which forces radio waves to travel faster than the speed of light. The resulting phenomenon could lead to new technologies in health and communications.

A Robot that Navigates Like a Person
Mohir
by Mohir  6-30-2009
The machine is controlled by algorithms designed to mimic different parts of the human visual system. Rather than capturing and mapping its surroundings over and over in order to plan its route--the way most robots do--the European machine uses a simulated neural network to update its position relative to the environment, continually adjusting to each new input. This mimics human visual processing and movement planning.

The "What The Hell Is This Shit Helmet Award" goes to... Tanyamm!
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-1-2009    20
As the current holder of the much coveted Helmet Award, I think the time has come to pass it on. I'd like to give it to Tanyamm, who every day makes us all smile with her fabulous LOLcat clips and is always so polite, sweet, funny and just an all 'round great gal, who I am proud to call a fellow clipper. It was also she, who suggested we should honour each other, so no one could be more deserving of this very, very, very prestigious award. *drumroll* "THE HELMET AWARD" *applause applause applause* Congratulations, Tanyamm!! The Helmet Award is now yours and you're free to pass it on to whomever you choose. Wear it with pride. .:D

Allotments: Grow Your Own
cakebelly
by cakebelly  7-1-2009    4
"Allotment gardens are characterised by a concentration in one place of a few or up to several hundreds of land parcels that are assigned to individuals or families. In allotment gardens, the parcels are cultivated individually, contrary to other community garden types where the entire area is tended collectively by a group of people. The individual size of a parcel ranges between 200 and 400 square meters, and often the plots include a shed for tools and shelter. The individual gardeners are organised in an allotment association which leases the land from the owner who may be a public, private or ecclesiastical entity, provided that it is only used for gardening (i.e. growing vegetables, fruits and flowers), but not for residential purposes. The gardeners have to pay a small membership fee to the association, and have to abide by the corresponding constitution and by-laws. However, the membership entitles them to certain democratic rights. "

5 hotels that will scare the daylights out of you
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-1-2009    5
The name says it all. In the late 1800s in Chicago, Dr. H.H. Holmes, born Herman Mudgett, built and operated a hotel that would later be dubbed the "murder castle" by law enforcement agents. Holmes was a lifelong cheat, swindler and fraud artist -- in medical school he took out insurance claims on cadavers and mangled the corpses to look like they were accident victims. Shortly before the 1893 World's Fair, which was hosted in Chicago, Holmes built a 60-room hotel in the Chicago suburb of Englewood. Holmes was the architect, and the hotel housed many bizarre features -- doors that led to nothing, rooms without windows, trap doors and hidden passageways. When Holmes opened the hotel up for business, guests got more than they bargained for. For four years, Holmes held various guests prisoner, tortured and killed them. He is known as America's first serial killer, admitting to 28 murders, Lovely, I know.

An interesting account that names and refute all arguments favoring a godly existence of any sort. ... As David Hume wrote over 200 years ago in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, "What peculiar privilege has this little agitation of the brain which we call thought, that we must thus make it the model of the whole universe?"
