Delayed gratification and the science of self-control:
einbar
by einbar  5-13-2009    4
"This and subsequent research has led us to believe that the ability to delay gratification for better rewards in the future is a fundamental skill in success, probably because it looks at how emotions and motivations interact with a more rational appproach to reasoning. We know what's best, but can we keep temptation at bay to reach it?" The article is a compelling exploration of this key ability and the subsequent research that has sprung up around it to help explain how we manage to keep those cheap instant hits at bay.

The Inalienable Right to Get High
chestnut501
by chestnut501  5-12-2009    2
The infamous President Nixon instigated this unwinnable war in 1971," Perigo recalls. "As with the equally misbegotten alcohol prohibition of 1919-1933, the only actual winner has been organized crime. The big loser has been the founding tenet of America: freedom. The right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness implies ownership of one's own body, which subsumes the right to ingest any substance of one's choosing, regardless of the moral status of such an action.

The Far Right is Getting More Extreme Everyday
chestnut501
by chestnut501  5-12-2009    5
Having been targeted myself, I realize that this hate is not business as usual. It makes me think that the legalization of Gay Marriage is being used as an excuse for their irrational behavior. For example thay have this rant of desparation that Gay Marriage will somehow or another destroy their own marriage. But when asked how that could happen, they have nothing. In fact, I've heard this right here along with dozens of other people.

Prostitution in pilgrim towns, exploitation through sex tourism and pedophilia are some of some of the "alarming trends" that have emerged in recent years in India, it noted. Authorities believe 90 percent of human trafficking in India is "intra-country."

Evidence of Modern Smarts in Stone Age Superglue
tabsey
by tabsey  5-13-2009
A product popular with all groups (look at the "war wounds" from that last fight with a crappy tube of superglue). Australian Aborigines use resin from spinifex bushes. They have been here for up to 80000 years, so would have used it for a fair bit of that time.
