The Dr. Seuss Many Didn't Know
sahara
by sahara  6-9-2008    4
Dr. Seuss worked as an editorial cartoonist for the paper from 1941 to 1943, drawing cartoons that lambasted isolationism, racism, anti-Semitism, Hitler, Mussolini, the Japanese, and the conservative forces in American politics.

Ancient cave found under church
invictus
by invictus  6-10-2008    1
Half a dozen sources (including Fox News) used this news story with the headline "First Church In The World". Of course, they also omitted archaeologist Thomas Parker's words: "It's quite possible that there was a cave with earlier occupation which was later converted to Christian use. But to make the jump that this was actually used by Christians fleeing Jerusalem in the 1st century A.D. seems like a stretch to me."

Whose reality are you living in?
willhelm
by willhelm  6-10-2008    12
I sometimes let others get in the way of my optimism. It happens quite frequently during the narrow-mindedness, bigotry, and hatefulness I confront. I have to constantly remain grounded in today's world and CHOOSE not to live in the materialist's world and live in my own reality.

Dark, Perhaps Forever - Clueless about the universe
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-9-2008    2
Whatever proposal is eventually selected, the dark energy satellite will return a tidal wave of data about the universe and its weird denizens, both visible and invisible. This data is likely to transform astronomy in unpredictable ways, but there is no guarantee that it will nail the mystery of dark energy. “We really need new theory, and we have none,” Dr. Krauss said.

Scientists to Launch Missle Attack on the Moon -Will Jupiter's Europa Follow?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-9-2008    1
This is obviously a good plan that will probably bring many insights at a relatively low price. And yet.... I cannot escape the feeling that it is not very elegant; this primitive human trait of blowing things up, even if it is done in the name of science.

Eat Crow, liberal Iraqi war skeptics
pkronfield
by pkronfield  6-9-2008    17
If Democrats had won the White House in 2004, the jihadists might have succeeded. The idiotic liberals are still for retreat in the face of victory. The US decision to "stay the course" in the Iraq war, which was also widely mocked and criticized, served to thoroughly demoralize the jihadist movement. Another example of why liberals are unfit to run this country, unless you want to run it into the ground.
