The thing that is interesting, is seeing this research in perspective; meaning it does not come to diminish the said trait. It simply points to the question that one needs to ask, what does this thing serves?

An End to Paralysis with Artificial Brain-to-Muscle Connectors
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-16-2008
Say the researchers: Until now, brain-computer interfaces were designed to decode the activity of neurons known to be associated with movement of specific body parts. Here, the researchers discovered that any motor cortex cell, regardless of whether it had been previously associated with wrist movement, was capable of stimulating muscle activity. This finding greatly expands the potential number of neurons that could control signals for brain-computer interfaces and also illustrates the flexibility of the motor cortex. Human implementations for the technology are at least a decade away, but this discovery could be a game-changer for dealing with paralysis. One possibility would be to connect the motor cortex with an area of the spine below an injury. Signals would be re-routed around the damaged spinal cord, and could allow the brain to regain control of the paralyzed body parts affected by the injury.

Security Services Want Your Personal Data, Clippers!
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-16-2008    9
The plan will need international cooperation since many of the new CSPs are based abroad, notably in the US. "International cooperation"... as in global? Nice. .:) They say the planned new legislation would apply only to communications data - such addresses and names - but not to the actual contents of the communications. Intercepting the contents would still need ministerial warrants. Warrants? For eavesdropping, spying, invasion of privacy and data collecting? AAAhahaha, good one! That is SO old school. . Clearly concerned about a public backlash against the plan, officials stress that the government is not building up a single central database containing personal information of everyone in the country. Sure. We believe you. Yessiree! We sure do. We even get to pay for it ourselves! Won't that be fun. .:D

Governments Ignore Starving To Prop Up Banks
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-16-2008    2
Experts have blamed the increase in famine on a number of factors such as oil prices, the growing use of biofuels and increased consumption of high-calorie food, particularly meat, in emerging economies. World Food Day hopes to divert attention back onto this ongoing food crisis. Almost a BILLION people are starving. A billion!! Can we even fathom, how many people that is, who are desperately trying to survive from day to day? I read, that on a 2 dollar a day wage, people are having to spend about $1,77 on food and the prices are so high, that it doesn't even cover their daily caloric needs. That leaves precious little money for housing, health, education, etc. Could YOU feed yourself and your family for less than 2 bucks a day... EVERY day... and still be able to send your children to school, get healthcare, etc? Just imagine if it were you.
