Fact: Nearly All of Hitlers Beliefs Placed Him On the Far Right[
    zizzy
    by zizzy  9-29-2009    9
Many conservatives accuse Hitler of being a leftist, on the grounds that his party was named "National Socialist." But socialism requires worker ownership and control of the means of production. In Nazi Germany, private capitalist individuals owned the means of production, and they in turn were frequently controlled by the Nazi party and state. True socialism does not advocate such economic dictatorship -- it can only be democratic. Hitler's other political beliefs place him almost always on the far right. He advocated racism over racial tolerance, eugenics over freedom of reproduction, merit over equality, competition over cooperation, power politics and militarism over pacifism, dictatorship over democracy, capitalism over Marxism, realism over idealism, nationalism over internationalism, exclusiveness over inclusiveness, common sense over theory or science, pragmatism over principle, and even held friendly relations with the Church, even though he was an atheist.

Obama and Racism: Head in the Sand?
    zizzy
    by zizzy  9-18-2009
The political reality is that Obama and his advisers must know that racial tension and the absence of national leadership fostering a national discussion of race issues in our country is the Sword of Damocles dangling over this presidency. If the mere act of a reporter like Maureen Dowd reconsidering her ideas and coming forward with an indictment can cause a media frenzy, how much more so the first African American president? It will be worth it. Long after medical care has changed to the point that this era looks like bloodletting and leaches, long after the US economy has shifted and adapted, gone through reforms and reboots, this administration and this president will be remember for one thing above all else: Obama will forever be either the man who healed this septic wound that runs across the back of this nation, or the man who turned away from the mirror to solve more "practical" issues.

Obama and the Right: Shadow Projection
    zizzy
    by zizzy  9-15-2009
Racism makes Obama the Other, but shadow projection is an even more powerful (if interrelated) force than simple racism, and it is very susceptible to the mob mentality – think Goldberg in Orwell’s 1984. This will not end well. Now that Obama is carrying their shadow, only a dramatic event from outside could change it. (Or, they could gain awareness of their disowned dark side, and tolerating the inevitable pain of that experience, integrate into a healthy whole. This would require white, middle-class, middle-aged Americans - the primary protesters - to acknowledge that white middle class Americans are not all goodness and light and start taking responsibility for white privilege, their environmental choices, effects of class on economic status, etc. Don’t hold your breath.) The more those on the right deny their own failings, the more their internal unease will increase, the more the hatred to Obama will grow, and the more the need to do something will increase. No wonder the far r

Late Update: An emailer points us to a picture of a Papua New Guinea tribesman wearing identical head-dress, feathers, and clothes to the man in the image forwarded by McKalip. So that suggests that McKalip's image was based on a Papua New Guinean, rather than an African. But it seems unlikely that McKalip himself was aware of this when he forwarded the email. It was he who first used the term "witch doctor" in our phone interview, and he didn't quibble with our suggestion that the image played on stereotypes of Africans.

I realize that is not an option that pigs lke Beck are willing to entertain, but that's his problem. What Beck Said: BECK: She has told the Westchester Journal News that "white people are devils. And should be gone. We should be away from those devils and we should still be in Africa." I will gladly send you a ticket. You want to go to Africa? I will personally purchase your airfare.      Regarding Obama, he has had immense difficulty seeing past the president's skin. He said Obama was elected because of race instead of his policies. http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200906080010 He has portrayed the Democratic health care reform effort as "the beginning of reparations." http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907220015 He has said that Obama plans to "settle old racial scores through new social justice." http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907240012 So it should have come as no surprise when Beck, who believes it is actually Obama, not himself, who "has real issues with race," http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907270045 said the president had "exposed himself as a guy" with "a deep-seated hatred for white people." http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907280008 The next day, he said "I think the president is a racist." http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200907290012 The Color of Change boycott started soon afterward. http://colorofchange.org/beck/

Against the Health Care Plan? Fine. Dissent does not make you a racist. Denying that racism isn't a factor in the protests makes you a party to racism. “These people are bringing race — and ‘Negro’ and ‘colored’ and Obama,” Scott said. “We should applaud the fact that we have an African-American president and he is working on this. This is a great thing. But it should not be a racial situation. What have we done except look at the problem and move on it?”

Ursula Le Guin spoke about the white-washing of book covers at the BookAmerca expo. Overexoticizing occurs too: click white-washed cover link. There is, in fact, a large audience for “black books” but they weren’t discovered until African American authors started self-publishing and selling their books on the subway and on the street and directly into schools. And, yet, the publishing industry still doesn’t seem to get it. Perhaps the whole “black books don’t sell” thing is a self-fulfilling prophecy? And then there’s the fantasy writer who had to user her first initial and borrow her grandmother’s name to use as a middle initial since her publisher didn’t think that kids would accept a woman writing a book with a male protagonist, this woman of course being J. K. Rowling. If we go back a few decades, there’s James Tiptree, Jr. Likewise, I don’t know of any men writing Romance, though there are probably some, but who write using female pseudonysm

"The Islamists in Egypt have already using this as a card to mobilize for the veil — not for the right of women to wear whatever they want, but in defense of the veil," Hossam el-Hamalawy, an Egyptian journalist and author of the popular blog Arabawy.org, tells TIME. But more salient than the women's dress issue is the manipulation of Sherbini as a symbol of Islam in a perceived stand-off between the Muslim world and the West

Black Women Get Beaten by the Police Too

    by zizzy  3-4-2009    3
Bartending Bear has clipped the first video, but I clip it here as part of a story on the pattern of police brutality against black women. There are other examples at the clip source. In addition to racism, we have to deal with patriarchy in our own commuities which renders crimes against our humanity invisible. Time and time again black women are assaulted by the police and yet the community only seems to rally when a black man is murdered or otherwise injured. Whose lives do we value? Police brutality is not a genderized issue. Our bodies are routinely beaten and in same cases we are subject to the extra indignity of sexual assault. When we speak about police violence being an issue for the black community it needs to be understood that without the inclusion of black women we are not seeing the whole picture.

For years, the California Christian right apparatus, long hampered by their nativism and racism, had been unable to make inroads into the state's brown, yellow and black population - a demographic goldmine in a state that is more than 50 percent minority and growing. Prop 8 may prove their goldrush. From the very beginning they bought up ad space in Chinese, black, Spanish, and Korean media; they hosted massive rallies for ethnic Christians. The Sunday before election day, I went to Los Angeles City Hall for the most celebratory, most diverse rally I have ever attended; it was organized by Yes on 8 Chinese advocates. Racism and Discrimination at the Secret Service

     E. Desmond Hogan, a lawyer for the black agents, said the agents were “shocked but not surprised by the late production of significant evidence of racism at high levels in the Secret Service.” “The government’s delay,” Mr. Hogan said, “follows a pattern of the Secret Service stonewalling plaintiffs and ignoring court orders, depriving African-American agents of the fundamental evidence of race discrimination that is key to their claims.” The lawsuit, which has dragged on through years of litigation, was filed in 2000 by 10 black agents who charged that they were unfairly denied promotions. The agency employs about 3,200 agents, about 10 percent of whom are black.

What is the Human Cost of Racism?
    zizzy
    by zizzy  4-6-2008
When I think about discrimination in the workplace, I think about a Pakistani-American man I know whose colleagues at an internet start-up told him they didn't want to leave him in the office alone in case he blew up the building. When I think about the impact of racist stereotypes in the media, I think about the black children in Kiri Davis's short film A Girl Like Me, and how 15 out of 21 of them chose the white doll over the black doll in her recreation of Kenneth B. Clark's doll test. When I think about Eurocentrism in our education system, I think of an Afro-Latino man I know whose third-grade teacher told him that Africans lived like monkeys until the white man brought them to America and saved them from their own wretchedness. If we want to mobilize people to take action against racism, facts and statistics are not enough. We need to put a human face on these issues.
