About me
I love to live in different countries. I'm an ex-pat, and a bit of a nomad because the world is too big and beautiful to stay home.

Why I use Clipmarks
To maintain a record of the state of the world as filtered through the Internet. In a way the Internet is like television, if you watch it too much your view can become distorted. On the other hand there is much to learn. It's a matter of judgment.

Filed under religious nonsense :( A wife is to submit herself graciously to the servant leadership of her husband even as the church willingly submits to the headship of Christ. She, being in the image of God as is her husband and thus equal to him, has the God-given responsibility to respect her husband and to serve as his helper in managing the household and nurturing the next generation. - 1988 Southern Baptist Convention

Auto Bailout's Death Seen as a Republican Blow at Unions
tabsey
by tabsey  12-16-2008    3
A bit far fetched to say that a political party would stoop so low as to sacrifice a potentially fine industry (alternative vehicles leading the way) just to take a swipe at the Unions. It is saying that Republicans and their supporters are willing to cause ruination on the nation. Crazy! Especially in times they should realize require cooperation.

The Pilgrims and Tisquantum: A Thanksgiving Tale
zizzy
by zizzy  11-27-2008
Tisquantum finally settled with the Pilgrims in Plymouth. He taught them how to catch eel, plant corn and fertilize their crops. He died, however, before he could teach them how not to be dicks. After their first harvest in 1621, the Pilgrims set apart a holiday of food, feasting, and praising God. This later came to be called “Thanksgiving,” a holiday of overeating, forced time with undesirable relatives, and shopping. Dickipedia.org Home (all entries)

On Proposition 8: Something to consider
zizzy
by zizzy  11-8-2008    1
For years, the California Christian right apparatus, long hampered by their nativism and racism, had been unable to make inroads into the state's brown, yellow and black population - a demographic goldmine in a state that is more than 50 percent minority and growing. Prop 8 may prove their goldrush. From the very beginning they bought up ad space in Chinese, black, Spanish, and Korean media; they hosted massive rallies for ethnic Christians. The Sunday before election day, I went to Los Angeles City Hall for the most celebratory, most diverse rally I have ever attended; it was organized by Yes on 8 Chinese advocates. Two Very Wealthy Men on Taxation Inequality

Republicans are more likely to think: “I’m making $80 million a year – God must have intended me to have a lower tax rate. The origin of that belief has been handed down from Abram Vereide (see below), but it goes all the way back to the Puritans. George Bush is not a member of the family, but in the 1970s he attended Bible study meetings in Midland, Texas that were organized by The Family. U.S. economic policy is in part based upon a Christianity for the elite. The Family was founded 70 years ago by Abraham Vereide, a Norwegian immigrant evangelist based in Seattle. In 1935, Vereide said, God appeared to him in a vision and revealed where Christianity had gone wrong: preoccupation with the poor, the weak and the suffering.

Obama's Minister Committed "Treason" But When My Father Said the Same Thing He Was a Republican Hero
zizzy
by zizzy  4-13-2008    9
My dad's books denouncing America and comparing the USA to Hitler are still best sellers in the "respectable" evangelical community and he's still hailed as a prophet by many Republican leaders. When Mike Huckabee was recently asked by Katie Couric to name one book he'd take with him to a desert island, besides the Bible, he named Dad's Whatever Happened to the Human Race? a book where Dad also compared America to Hitler's Germany. We Republican agitators of the mid 1970s to the late 1980s were genuinely anti-American in the same spirit that later Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson (both followers of my father) were anti-American when they said God had removed his blessing from America on 9/11, because America accepted gays. Falwell and Robertson recanted but we never did.

Lingering Southern resentment is the real problem
zizzy
by zizzy  4-13-2008
No one ever demanded of President Bush that he repudiate these hellfire and brimstone types, yet ... the ideologues are demanding something more of Obama. The hypocrisy here is large; I would not expect anything else from Krauthammer but Michael Gerson is a "person of faith." And surely he knows the danger of hypocrisy in that part of the public sphere where religion intersects with politics. I'm sure he knows much of the Gospel of Matthew by heart. .. let me remind of Matthew 23 verses 13-15. Each verse begins, "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!" America needs no heavenly destroyer to revive itself, it needs people in Gerson's position to examine their consciences and stop being hypocrites. A good place to start would be for him to address the shocking statements made by white Christian preachers over the air waves every day. He might take advantage of the opportunity to repudiate them by name and renounce their help in electing Republicans to office. [/qu

A chilling vision of what America could become. The entire article is worth reading - these people will do everything they can to destroy the earth and inhabitants to fulfill their belief in the biblical apocalypse. http://www.apocalypsesoon.org/count.html Huckabee may stumble and falter in later primaries, but his right-wing Christian populism is here to stay. the media and the government proclaim the Good News to one and all. Labor unions, civil rights laws and public schools will be abolished. Women will be removed from the work force to stay at home, and all those deemed insufficiently Christian will be denied citizenship.
