POPSTroy's Poision Pill Please read this entire article in Mother Jones. It explains how a Bush appointee made it next to impossible for a person to sue a drug or pharmaceutical company, or medical device manufacturer for injuries sustained from use of their product. The claim goes that if the FDA approves a drug or device, that that should be the end of the line. As long as the product meets FDA approval, not judge or jury should be able to determine that said product could be responsible for someones injury. This is another example of how the Bush administration has put big business over human lives. Is it any wonder he demands preemptive immunity for communications companies, when he already had the FDA preempt medical liability lawsuits? This just gets disgustinger and disgustinger.

POPS Soldier, After Bipolar Treatment and Suicide Attempts, Sent Back to War Zone If this doesn't demonstrate the heartlessness and inhumanity of the U.S. military towards soldiers who are unable to perform in combat for valid reasons, I don't know what does. This young man was in hospital being treated with psychotropic medications after attempting suicide. He was pulled out against medical advice and sent to Iraq. Someone must be accountable. But who?

POPSWalmart Once Again Proves It Puts Money Above Life Every time I read a story like this about Walmart, I just wanna cry and/or scream. And yet, with all the abuse this company inflicts on its employees, the workers who manufacture some of their products, and the way they continue to ruin small town America and beyond, I see people streaming into their stores to take advantage of the ultra-cheap prices. I wonder how many of these people ever stop for even a moment to think about the high cost of these cheap prices. The high cost in human suffering and degradation that makes it possible to save some dimes on their purchases of cheap, plasticized crap.

POPSGays Say Farewell to Tammy Faye Tammy Faye became a gay icon because of her sense of fairness towards homosexuals and because of her strength and courage under personal, professional and ultimately, medical duress. Gay men love strong and courageous women. The ultimate gay icon, as many of us know, was Judy Garland. Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, Carol Channing are a few of the other woman who commanded the respect and adoration of the gay community. Tammy Faye exemplified courage and a sense of strong purpose in her life. And although she did become involved in a phony religious scam with her former husband, Jim, she decided to pick herself up, admit her faults and guilt, and build a new life for herself. At this she succeeded admirably.

POPSExcellent New For HIV Infected Transplant Patients Fabulous news for patients with HIV who are in need of organ transplants. This is another step forward in extending the lives of HIV sufferers who, not all that many years ago, appeared to be doomed. The only negative aspect to all of this good news, is that too many of younger gay males are beginning to think of HIV and AIDS as being curable diseases, which they are not. This has been leading to increasingly risky behaviour with the younger set. But over all, these wonderful medical advances tip way on the side of GOOD!

POPSGetting Sick Over Religion First we read of dilapidated and inferior medical facilities at Walter Reed, and now and Iowa Veteran's hospital is accused of harassing an Orthodox Jewish patient over his religious beliefs. What the hell is going on with our system? When did the right wing religious nuts get so entrenched in various aspects of our government activities? Walter Reed of course, had nothing to do with religion, but the Iowa case certainly does, and there have been so many other reports about religious harassment occurring at West Point etc. Thank you Saint Ronald Reagan for introducing these people into government during your two terms in office. I fear we will be feeling their intrusion for many years to come.

POPSI Find Mr Thompson's Excuses A Bit Lame Mr. Thompson was asked a very clear question, and he gave a very clear answer. I was watching and listening to the debate very carefully, and I had no doubt he understood what was being asked. The very wording of his response would indicate he knew what was asked. Only after the feces hit the fan did he start finding excuses, including medical problems, as his reason for not understanding the question. Those kinds of excuses cause me to have medical problems. They make me feel sick.

POPSAn Important Article About Overzealous Drug Enforcement
This is a very serious issue. As a chronic pain patient, I have all too often been treated like a street addict due to my requirement of narcotic analgesic treatment for my pain. For the past several years I have been enrolled at a pain management clinic in their methadone program which affords me excellent pain relief on a reliable and constant basis. But there are many people who are not as fortunate as I am, and have to suffer needlessly with their pain because doctor's who want to help them cannot due to the overzealous DEA agents the Bush administration has instructed to crack down on physicians prescribing narcotic analgesics. This is not to say that there are no unscrupulous doctor's out there, who make money illegally selling prescriptions. But they are in vast minority of the millions of honest doctors whose only concerns are their patients well being. Patients should never be made to feel as if being sick is a crime and their docs should be able to help them.

POPSFinally. Accountability! This is a first. Someone is finally being held accountable in this government. Let's just hope he is not being used as a scapegoat, and that permanent changes will be made in the way we treat and care for or national heroes.

POPSAre Our Injured Soldiers Being Punished For Their Complaints? These reports of taking retribution of any kind against the soldiers for reporting their living conditions in Building 18 of Walter Reed Vets Hospital is just disgusting. Have these brave men and women not done enough for their country? Now they have to stand in line for inspection formation at 6:00 A.M, ? Hell, they already went through basic, fer cryin' out loud. We call them our heroes and then treat them like fecal matter. Whoever is doing this harassment should be busted down to private.

POPSA Little Exposere Sometimes Does the Trick It looks like the Washington Post article this past weekend by Dana Priest embarrassed the Bush White House enough that they really got things moving fast. It seems the media can do good things when they do not kow-tow to the administration and actually live up to their mandate.

POPSSo Much For Supporting Our Troops
President Bush is constantly bragging about how he and his administration always put the needs of our troops first and foremost in their considerations. Money is no object when it comes to supporting our troops says our president. And now we learn from both the Washington Post and the LA Times that inpatients and outpatients and Walter Reed Army Hospital, the number one military hospital in the country if not the world, does not have the funds to hire enough help to keep track of our soldiers when they are injured, or to keep the facilities in which they are treated and housed in livable condition. Our wounded heroes share their rooms with cockroaches, mice and rats, along with moldy wall paper and all around filth. This is a disgrace and I hope the next time the president holds a news conference and brags about supporting the troops again, the press on hand will confront him with this disgraceful information and demand clear and honest answers from him.

POPSA Cutting Question This entire article is interesting, and yet, as a Jewish male, a bit painful to think about. (Yes I know, not only Jewish men are circumcised, but let's face it, we started the trend, right?) Rubbing the residue of foreskins on one's face or other bodily location might very well be a touchy subject. Read the article and decide if Oprah's attitude is correct on this one. After all, everyone knows, what Oprah says is good, is GOOD!

POPSA Hope For Clemency
This story hits me especially hard. I am a chronic pain patient who went through years of surgery, rehab and tortuous treatments before I was finally able to hook-up with a pain clinic who is able to dispense the medication I require in what for a "normal" person would be an excessive dose. I admit that I live in Canada where the "war on drugs" has not become a totally out of control and paranoid crusade by the government. In the U.S. however, many doctors are fearful or writing prescriptions for narcotic medication because of government interference. There are any number of cases of doctors treating chronic pain patients with the medicine they need, only to lose their licenses due to overzealous federal drug agents. The real crime is when legitimate chronic pain patients, whose lives are miserable enough to begin with, are treated like junkies trying to hustle drugs in order to get their medical needs met. And that the doctors who try to treat them are so often harassed.

POPSCollective Unconscionable I found this article extremely disturbing. I urge you to read the entire piece to learn how the American Psychological Association, one of the most liberal professional organizations in the world, has sold itself out, lock, stock and barrel to the Bush administration. It is so hard for me to imagine that professionals who choose to spend their lives helping others with their emotional problems, would permit themselves to develop and monitor methods that clearly skirt the edges of torture, and at times, go over the edge.

POPSThe Ultimate Double Standard I happen to be one of those people who truly believes life is precious. As someone who lives with two serious chronic illnesses and continuous sever pain, I continue to fight to live my life to its fullest, and to remain active and as productive as possible. However, I also believe that every human being is entitled to dignity in their lives and a decent quality of life. When those two things are absent from my life, I would like the option of deciding when I have had enough. I should be entitled to the same consideration as a race horse, or a house pet. I do not believe anyone would consider seriously the act of ending their lives lightly. It is a tortuous decision and it is an act that should not be carried-out in haste. But the option should be available, and once the decision is made, the person's doctor should be permitted to help the patient end his/her life with grace, dignity and loving care.
