POPSAnother Republican Hatemonger I am so sick of the hatemongers who exist in our government. I am even more upset that so many of them seem to be Republicans. It is because of people like this that I left the Republican party. This party has been taken over by right-wing Christian bigots who want to change our country into their theocracy, no matter which group they have to put at grave danger in order to do so. I hope most fair-minded Americans will remember this come next November.

POPSChina is opening up to gays In 2001 China removed homosexuality from its official list of mental illnesses. That move has opened the door to further understanding of the gay lifestyle, and has helped gays begin to form a solid community. This is another example of how the world is finally realizing that gay folks are an integral part of the human condition, and that our lives are constantly intertwined.

POPSAnother Homophobic So-Called ex-Gay Ministry Falls. I was delighted to hear of the demise of the very dangerous and hateful so-called ministry. These groups do enormous damage to gays and the entire gay community by insisting on insisting the homosexuality is some kind of sinful, personal conscious choice, and claiming they can "cure" people of this dreaded condition. They spread lies and hate about the gay community and yet, eventually they are revealed to be as phony as the proverbial three dollar bill.

POPSOnce Again, Religious Fundamentalists Bring Harm in the Name of God. Religious fundamentalists, this time of the Jewish faith, set off a pipe bomb in Jerusalem to protest the annual gay pride march. When will religious people begin to realize what hypocrites they are by inflicting harm on innocent people in the name of their God? Or are they just so blind to their own ignorance and intolerance that they cannot see the discrepancy?

POPSAn Expressive Language Struggling for a Rennaisance As someone who publishes an online magazine of Jewish culture, politics and lifestyle, I am thrilled to learn of this marvelous conference. Yiddish is a beautifully expressive, vibrant and in a very real sense, universal language. So many Yiddishisms have been incorporated into everyday English. Shlep, shmuck, mazel tov are but three of hundreds of expressions that Jews and non-Jews use in their day-to-day conversations. I am glad this group is working towards keeping Yiddish alive.

POPSGay Comedy Produced By Gays...How Unique Finally a gay positive TV show presented from the perspective of the gay sensibility. Will and Grace broke the mold and made positive gay characters possible on a mainstream television sitcom. But the show was essentially straight people talking about us, and showing an audience their perception of gays. Now we have gays presenting their own perception of who they, or should I say we, are. I live in Canada, and I cannot get this new channel and the gay lifestyle channel on her cable and satellite grid is not scheduled, yet, to carry it. But the moment I an able to find a way to watch The Big Gay Sketch Show, you can be sure I will be doing so.

POPSIs "gay" simply a word, or is it actually a weapon? There is a very thin line between good manners and political correctness. It is my personal belief that each of us already knows the difference, but for some reason has forgotten that words can hurt. Why is it necessary to degrade a group of people or a person in order to make a legitimate point? If some thing is stupid, as this article states, then why not call it for what it is,,,,,stupid. Why do we have to refer to it as gay? Since when has gay become a synonym for dumb, stupid, foolish, etc? The English language has myriad words to describe almost anything we wish to describe. I personally have no particular problem with so called "curse" words, as the words themselves are perfectly harmless. But to use any kind of word for the sole purpose of making someone else the butt of a mean-spirited joke, for example, just makes no sense to me.

POPSHillary Needed To Be Reminded Of Her Feelings? I don't wanna keep belabouring this piont, but each time I am reminded of how Hillary had to be embarrassed into taking a position on an issue she continues to claim as her own, I find myself becoming angry. She seems to be so incapable of speaking off the cup, about anything that might be considered even remotely controversial, that she first has to go back, check with her campaign team, and then say what she is cleared to state. Very sad indeed for someone who wants to lead the country and the entire free world. I had such great hopes for Hillary, but the more I observe her as a candidate the more I am looking elsewhere. Richardson or Obama perhaps?

POPSA Kiss Is Just A Kiss...Except at Foley's Pub Imagine two men kiss and get thrown out of a bar for showing affection. Let's see, if a man kissed a woman or even if two women kissed, I bet that would be just fine. But two men? We can have none of that. God forbid two men should show the same affection for each other than any mixed-gender couple might show! What a disgrace!!

POPSTransexuals Are Biggest Threat To Children? Hard to believe that prejudice against transsexuals is so deep that the police will harass someone simply for talking to children. You would think the police would know that the vast majority of child molestation cases are about heterosexual men and family members who molest kids, not members of the GLBT community.

POPSHeath and Jake Are Number 1 Smoochers Although I am not one to give a whole lot of thought to who engaged in the hottest Hollywood kiss, it is still nice to know that we have come so far in our society that Jake and Heath could even be considered in the contest.

POPSSay It Isn't So! Has the media lost in completely when they believe the news about Anna Nichol Smith's death, and all the sordid details surrounding it takes precedence over Iraq, and other highly critical events taking place all over the world? Or perhaps, they have actually read the public's priorities and are just giving us what we want. This is a chicken or the egg argument but one thing is for sure, no matter which way it turns our, the egg is really rotten.

POPSSpoken Like A True Moron I hate black people......NOT! But I wonder how Mr. Hardaway would react if someone on his team or from his sport made a comment such as that.

POPSAn Interesting Question of Values As this complete article points out, in general, people in the U.S. are far more concerned with images or discussions of sexual mattters as sources of indecent corruption. And yet, torture and killing is displayed, discussed and at times praised as being heroic and a sign of strength. When I first read this brief piece I thought it was a bit of a stretch, but after giving it a bit more thought, I realize it made an important observation about some of our screwed-up priorities.

POPSAre People's Individual Rights Going Up In Smoke As a former smoker, I know what it feels like to be made to feel like a pariah for smoking. I have spent many a lonely moment on cold patios or street corners. I have become at this point very much a believer that smoking is a public health issue. However, the key word here is "public." What people do in the privacy of their own homes is sacrosanct and the government should have no say in those matters. If a person rents an apartment or home where smokers used to reside, just air the place out and have it cleaned. If that is not enough, that search a bit harder to find accommodations that was previously occupied by non-smokers. But please, keep the government out of our homes.

POPSA Cutting Question This entire article is interesting, and yet, as a Jewish male, a bit painful to think about. (Yes I know, not only Jewish men are circumcised, but let's face it, we started the trend, right?) Rubbing the residue of foreskins on one's face or other bodily location might very well be a touchy subject. Read the article and decide if Oprah's attitude is correct on this one. After all, everyone knows, what Oprah says is good, is GOOD!

POPSWhat's Good For The Gays is Also Good For the Heteros A silly initiative? Absolutely; but it makes a terrific point. I have heard more times than I can remember that the main reason for marriage is for procreation, hence the institution must be the sole privilege of a man and a woman. Well, is it not fair to ask that this rationale be respected on all fronts? :-)

POPSSnicker's Made Me Snicker As a gay man, I am just simply NOT offended. If anything, it makes the guys in the ad look dumb and pathetic. It might even have the subtle message to many viewers that acting as if gay is disgusting and just plain stupid. Oh yeah; it also made me laugh.

POPSYep, They're Gay! Interesting article about continued research to determine the origins of homosexuality. But it appears some gays and other folk have fears of the intentions concerning this work.

POPSAlan Cumming and Gay Rehab Alan Cumming, hits the nail on the head. Gay slander rehab would make a terrific SNL sketch. As anyone who is familiar with my clips knows, I do not take homophobia lightly. But come on folks. Rehab for gay slander? What happened to just good manners and learning to keep your mouth shut? Most people can learn that without committing themselves into a rehab facility. Of course, if Isaiah finds he has to foam at the mouth about gays, the maybe he really does need to be detoxed. :-)

POPSAnother Stab in the Heart of Equality Once again gays are being treated at second class citizens. The right-wingers shout about "family values." Yet, when gays and lesbians want to protect their own families, suddenly the tune changes. I suppose to those people who are anti-Gay believe only they have the only true families.

POPSAN Excellent Article Debunking the Muth of the "New Anti-Semitism As a Jewish man who spends a great deal of his time writing about and promoting Jewish culture, lifestyle and politics on the Web, I have become particularly incensed by the attempt of AIPAC and other right-wing lobbyist of branding anyone who criticizes Israel as being anti-Semitic and anti-Israel. It is a false allegation that is doing great harm to the Jewish community.

POPSThis "Breaking News" is Broke! When the hell with the U.S. public finally grow-up? Are there no more important situations going on in the world that who sleeps with whom? I was absolutely livid as I was watching CNN's "The Situation Room" when Wolf Blitzer interrupted a discussion he was having with a political journalist to announce that Gavin Newsom has admitted to having an affair with his former campaign manager's wife. Newsom himself is divorced. These are all adults capable of working out their own problems. Why in God's name should the public give a damn about their personal marital problems? With Iraq boiling over into Iran, and the world collapsing around us, we shouldn't even be the slightest bit concerned in this kind of tabloid journalism. I have written to CNN about this, and I hope others might do the same.

POPSHigh Schools in South Africa Aren't Afraid of Gays High Schools in South Africa have decided that being gay is not something that needs to be hidden or feared. They strive to have their teachers and students understand what homosexuality actually is and include information about it as part of lifestyles studies. The program is in a pilot stage and participation is up to each province. This is a great step forward and it would sure be nice if the high schools in the U.S. would take this as an example of how to handle this topic in a positive and non-judgmental manner.

POPSThe Ultimate Double Standard I happen to be one of those people who truly believes life is precious. As someone who lives with two serious chronic illnesses and continuous sever pain, I continue to fight to live my life to its fullest, and to remain active and as productive as possible. However, I also believe that every human being is entitled to dignity in their lives and a decent quality of life. When those two things are absent from my life, I would like the option of deciding when I have had enough. I should be entitled to the same consideration as a race horse, or a house pet. I do not believe anyone would consider seriously the act of ending their lives lightly. It is a tortuous decision and it is an act that should not be carried-out in haste. But the option should be available, and once the decision is made, the person's doctor should be permitted to help the patient end his/her life with grace, dignity and loving care.

POPSA Haven For Retiring Gay Couples
It's about time that life-partner's have retirement facilities available that allow us to spend out senior years together, in a welcoming and nurturing atmosphere. I know a good number of older gay and lesbian couples who are essentially forced to live in retirement communities in which they have to hide their relationship for fear of being ostracized by less open-minded neighbours. Many actually rent or purchase separate homes or apartments in order to maintain a "straight" appearance. I know that Arnold and I are beginning to think about retirement, and after spending 25 years together, we would never consider being split up, nor should be put in a position to have to give thought to such a circumstance. I am not saying that ALL retirement communities are anti-gay or homophobic, and one of these days, no one will give a crap who is gay, straight or anywhere in between. But it is nice to know there are areas for retiring gay and lesbian couples if this is what they choose.

POPSHaggard's Gay Escort Visits His Former Church It takes some kind of huge testes to show your face at the church whose minister you outed. But Jones wants to write a book, and getting his info first hand is commendable. I must say I admire the parishioners who greeted him pleasantly. Then again, these pleasant people are members of the same group that would deny gays equal rights under the law.

POPSMad About Mary It seems Mr. Cheney is caught in a hypocrites worst dilemma. Having to face the fact that a close member of his family repudiates the political ideology he and his boss ran on and uses to court their base. But to espouse anti-Gay views and then refuse to respond to a reasonable question about his lesbian daughter's pregnancy, which is hardly a secret, reveals a new level of hypocrisy unlike any I have ever witnessed. He uses our sons and daughters as cannon fodder for his neo-con agenda and yet refuses to discuss an openly acknowledged situation regarding his own daughter. Is this arrogance to the core or just plain blindness to the public's perception of him? This is just one more thing I can add to my list of why I cannot stomach Dick Cheney.

POPSSinging in Der Shprits This is a lovely piece designed to offer a humourous and ethnic spin towards the problem of the environment. I found myself laughing and thinking at the same time, and also remembering aspects of my childhood being raised in a Jewish household.

POPSVeterans Groups Want Equal Access to Schools in a West Florida County It's only fair, imho, that the opportunity be given for the "other" side to express their side of the military story to high school students. I remember so clearly the line in the film "Private Benjamin" when Goldie Hawn's character enlists in the army, and she is shocked when she sees what an army base looks like. She says "But I joined the Army with the condo's and swimming pools." Not everyone knows that the military is not all glory and adventure. To be fair, students must be shown the realistic side of military life before they make a decision to sign-up. For those students who find this way of life appealing, wonderful. But for those who would cringe at this lifestyle, they are better off knowing before they raise their right hand and take the oath.

POPS12-year-old Kim is the World's Youngest Transsexual. I have mixed feelings about this particular situation. I am not personally comfortable with the idea of having a child of such a tender age making a decision of such a monumental nature. I am also concerned about dealing with hormonal development during puberty. But, I am not a doctor, and all I can do is with the best of luck to Kim and his family.

POPSGeneral Wesley Clark Joins Democrat anti-Semitic Wing
I clipped this article as an appalling example of the kind of extremist rhetoric that is being perpetuated by some right-wing political groups. Calling Carter an anti-Semite because of the title of his new book, and do not be fooled, the vitriol is based mostly on the use of the word "Apartheid" in the title, is totally dishonorable and disgusting. Now, trying to tag Wesley Clark as being anti-Semitic, and using his friendship with President Carter as a prime example of his anti-Semitism in a new low in all of this crap. As the editor of an online magazine promoting Jewish culture and lifestyle on the Web, I have no use for people who use criticism of Israel as a determining factor of a person's overall feelings about Jews. It is due to the efforts of AIPAC and other right-wing organizations that American Jews especially are being led to believe that only someone who is anti-Semitic would ever criticize Israel. I for one criticize Israel at times, and I am no anti-Semite.

POPSWho Will Kill The Evil Germs? Mark Morford is one of my favourite columnists. He has a wonderfully quirky mind and uses it to express his ideas of the political and intellectually lacking aspects of our society. I urge you to read his entire column by clicking on the visit page link at the top.
