The Conservtive Gov't of Canada is imitating the Bushies
    zasel
    by zasel  5-6-2008
Canada has always been far more democratic than the U.S. when it concerns access to information and transparency in government. Not perfect, for sure, but terrific compared to some of the tricks used in my home country of the U.S. But since the Conservative government, which is essentially made up of remnants of the failed Reform Party, has come to power, they have done everything in their power to imitate the machinations of the Bush administration and its policies of secrecy and outright lying. This article explains how they have now, without any notice whatsoever, closed down the access to information database that is used by journalists and the public to track the goings on in government. Canada must dump Stephen Harper and his gang of regressive assholes, and bring back transparency in government before the entire system turns into a carbon copy of the Bush administration. Harper has said his political hero is George W. Bush.

Former Speaker Hastert's Congressional Seat is Lost to a Newbie Democrat!
    zasel
    by zasel  3-8-2008    2
If this is any indication of things to come, and it is, the Republicans have a lot to worry about come November. This seat has been reliably Republican for decades. The Democrats didn't even contest a couple of elections in Hastert's area. Just two weeks ago it appeared the Democrat didn't stand a chance. I really believe the country has finally awakened to the facts that the Bush administration, and their supporters in Congress has taken the country in a terribly wrong and deadly direction.

Willie Nelson Wants to See Bush Impeached
    zasel
    by zasel  2-25-2008
Country singer Willie Nelson wants to impeach Bush and "Throw the bastards out." However, he does not see the Democrats as a viable alternative considering how they have not done a thing to change direction in Iraq and keeps caving into Bush. He feels the deck is stacked against the people. Ya know what? I think he has a good point. The only hope I think the county really has right now is to elect Senator Obama as president. I honestly do not know if he will be a good president or not. However, I really believe he has the potential to be a transformational political figure and we should give him a chance to live up to that potential. He is the only candidate on the scene who can move the nation in a positive direction emotionally, and motivate them to engage themselves in the election, which is something very much lacking up 'til now. I honour the work Hillary has done and continues to do as a senator, but as president she would be back to the future.

The Political Filth Just Keeps On Coming
    zasel
    by zasel  1-11-2008    4
Why is it that the U.S. seems to need to indulge in filthy, vicious and personally destructive political elections. I know that election campaigns are not necessarily the friendliest of circumstances, but why is it necessary for opponents to destroy each other while trying to prove that either one is the best person for the job? As an American I am disgusted by the vile crap that is propagated by opposing campaigns. And the public, although they keep saying they do not approve of these kinds of campaign tactics, continue to respond to them thus encouraging the campaigns to maintain this vicious style.

    Tim Russert, Journalist Extraordinaire.....NOT
    zasel
    by zasel  11-3-2007    4
This column by Paul Waldman, in the American Prospect is a must-read for anyone who finds themselves baffled by the ridiculous level of questions asked at the presidential debates, and other face-to-face interviews. He chooses Tim Russert as his primary target in this piece, which is quite apt considering the way Russert handled the questioning during the Democratic debate October 30. I was only able to clip a tiny bit to give you an idea of what it is about, but I urge you to read the entire piece. It is well worth your time in my rarely to be humble opinion.

Rudy Should Voluteer to Be Waterboarded
    zasel
    by zasel  10-26-2007    37
Rudy doesn't really believe "waterboarding" is torture. He says it depends on "Who's doing it." So I guess that means that if we, the U.S. are doing it, it is just fine, but if "they", the "other" are doing it, is is torture. This man is a sick bastard who needs to try waterboarding on for size. Who knows? He might actually like it.

Finally, Rudy's 9/11 Lies are Being Exposed
    zasel
    by zasel  10-26-2007    4
I've been waiting impatiently, for Mr. Giuliani's lies to begin catching up with him. He has been running all over the country claiming to be an "expert on terrorism," and Islamofascism. Some voters, outside the New York metropolitan area, are falling for his story hook, line and sinker. But now, his own words given during testimony he gave to the 9/11 commission are leaking into the media, and it tells a very different story. It presents a person who knows virtually nothing about terrorism, al Qaeda or bin Laden. He proves the falsity of his claims concerning the inadequate radios his fire fighters were forced to use that fateful day, along with other information that paints a very different picture from the one he has been unveiling for the public during the campaign.

Larry Craig Breaks His Promise and Refuses to Resign His Senate Seat

First he's guilty then he's not. He announces he's gonna quit and then he stays. The Republicans in the Senate are having apoplexy over this guy, who they thought they would be well rid of at the end of September, but he has decided to stay out the full his remaining term. So, now the Republicans have another worry on their plate for next year's elections, which is shaping up to be a nightmare for their party. Several high profile senators and congresspersons are not going to run for another term. There are scandals being investigated, and now Senator Craig says he is gonna stay and keep his sordid story on the front burner right through to November 08. It couldn't happen to a nicer group of pols.

Romney Cannot Escape His Past Support of Gays
    zasel
    by zasel  9-19-2007    1
Mitt Romney is trying mightily to escape from his past, strong support of the gay and lesbian community. Fliers congratulating the gay community on Pride Day in Massachusetts, and pledging support for their interests in being released publicly for the first time. His comments saying that he is a far better friend to gays than Ted Kennedy could ever hope to be, is also part of the record of his unsuccessful Senate run. But now that he needs the religious right on his side, he does another about face, and denies any support for gay rights whatsoever. Just as he did for his support of a woman's right to choose. This guy doesn't care what he has to say or do in order to win the office of his choice at the moment. What will he decide to change once he wins, god forbid.

Fleischer and his group Freedom's Watch are not only using the overworked and phony connection between the Iraq war and the 9/11 attacks, but they are aiming at their own Republicans who are fleeing the president's Iraq strategy. They are so panicked that Bush is going to be forced into a corner in September, that they are actually trying to intimidate members of their own party with the same bullshit rhetoric and advertising they used to manipulate and scare voters in the past two elections. Ari and his group should be totally ashamed to exploit our wounded and killed vets in such a crass political game.

I clipped this article to applaud Senator Obama for listening to and caring about the gay community. However, after reading several of the reader comments at the end of the piece, I find it interesting that rather than commenting on that aspect of this story, readers are blaming ABC news for being hypocritical and unfairly negative towards Obama for pointing out that he is against accepting money for federal lobbyists. Politics as with beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Will Fred Thompson Go Back to Law & Order?
    zasel
    by zasel  8-1-2007
Mr. Thompson's non-campaign has the makings of a big bust if he keeps up with this ongoing indecision. When he first toyed with running, the Republicans got very excited considering that none of the other declared candidates have really caught fire. But Thompson has been jacking around for months now with promised announcement dates that come and go, and expectations for fund raising which are not met. His reputation for being somewhat lazy when it comes to his political work when he was a senator appears to have some validity judging from the manner in which he is running, or should I say, moseying along with his presidential campaign plans.

Mugabe Claims He Is A Victim

President Robert Mugabe has turned Zimbabwe into a hell hole for most of its inhabitants. He has run murderous rule over his minions and is considered by many to be a far worse dictator than Saddam Hussein could ever dream of being. Now, this guy is claiming to be a victim of Western and local opponents who are trying to end his rule. Poor guy. I think maybe the two presidents, Bush and Mugabe should get together and cry on each others shoulders over the fact that they are so misunderstood. I'll volunteer to hold the towel.

Romney Plays the Old "Commie/Red Scare"
    zasel
    by zasel  7-23-2007
Mitt Romney, the chameleon candidate whose views change with the wind, has decided the best way to win the Republican nomination is to convince the public that Hillary is a Socialist at best and a Communist at worst. All this because Hillary had the nerve to say that we have to become a more "we're in it together society." What a terribly threatening thought that must be to Romney and his Republican friends. The idea that people could actually care about each other rather than lead totally selfish lives just scares the shit out of them. What a sad state of affairs to think that this is what the Republicans are offering the country. Selfishness, isolation and the ol' red scare.

They're blaming him for not ridding the Marriott Hotel chain from pay per view hardcore porn, when he sat on the board for about years. It's gonna be interesting to see if Mr. Romney can actually beat back these kinds of accusations. He says his beliefs are very conservative, and yet his political history is far from such. I am looking forward to following his campaign for as long as it lasts.

The Truth About Rudy Is Starting To Flow
    zasel
    by zasel  7-1-2007
I believe that Rudy's phony "America's Mayor" mantle is about to lose its shine. The man is a total fraud. He is no hero of 9/11, more like the hindrance of 9/11. Many cops and fireman were lost because of Rudy's ineptitude and colossal ego. He put the emergency response centre in the World Trade Centre against the advice of all the terrorism and security experts. He knew the fireman and police could not communicate with the devices they had, and yet did nothing over the years to change that. All the guy did was take bows and make grand speeches. Sounds a bit like Bush to me and you know how popular he is today.

Is Mrs. Edwards Really Speaking for John?
    zasel
    by zasel  6-25-2007
It seems to me that Elizabeth Edwards is saying what John Edwards is not yet ready to say for himself. My guess is however, that as the days and weeks go by, Mr. Edwards will be joining Mrs. Edwards in this sentiment. I think he is trying to give the impression that he is slowly coming to the realization that banning same-sex marriage is discriminatory and that he really does not see any moral harm in permitting two people of the same sex who love each other to marry. His wife is softening the ground for him.

Will You Tube Bring Some Actual Honesty to The Debates?
    zasel
    by zasel  6-23-2007    1
So far these early debates have been pretty tame as far as the kinds of questions that are being asked. The candidates themselves have been primarily making stump speeches and sound bytes, but not explaining their innermost beliefs. I don't know if You Tube will make much of a difference, especially considering the fact that with so many candidates vying for time on microphone, they really cannot say much. Hopefully, as the candidates begin to narrow-down, the questions and answers will become more meaningful.

Edwards Is Really Getting A Cut From The Media Stylists
    zasel
    by zasel  6-1-2007    1
I am not actually supporting Mr. Edwards in this campaign, but I still believe in fairness for all candidates. I am so fed up with the way the corporate, mainstream media continues to exert its biased influence on elections. We all know about Mr. Edwards ill conceived haircut, but it's been reported ad nauseum and there is no one on the face of the earth who hasn't heard about the $400 cost, that has any concern about this election. But, once again, instead of covering issues, and ideas, the media hangs on to old news of little or no consequence. They are doing with Edwards and they will do it will the other candidates, meanwhile keeping the public uninformed about the real issues facing the voters. This is positively disgusting.

The Democrats Have To Stop Fearing Fear
    zasel
    by zasel  4-16-2007
Paul Krugman lays it out perfectly. The Democrats are still reacting to the fear the Republicans shoveled on for so long and have not realized how much in the mainstream their base is representing. The majority of the voting public hates the Iraq war, does not trust this president or his administration, and believes they are a bunch of liars. They also are demanding universal health care even if taxes have to rise to pay for it. So the Dems have got to start catering to their base, as the Republicans have been doing up 'til now, if they are going to win the votes of the majority of the public.

Oh John, What Have Ye Done?
    zasel
    by zasel  4-7-2007    2
This article was very difficult to clip effectively. It truly spells out the tragedy of John McCain's fall from grace. A man who sold his integrity and core beliefs when he smelled, up close, the strong, aroma of power. He betrayed his own family after they were slandered by the vicious Bush team in 2000 and literally wound up kissing his enemies cheeks in order to fall into the good graces of the Evangelical base. He further ensured this by snuggling up to all the Evangelical leaders who smeared and libeled him during the campaign because the taste of power was so strong. Once a man even I as a Liberal could proudly support, he is now just a shadow of a man who at one time exemplified political greatness. A tragedy, indeed. Please take the time to read the complete article.

Remember When Kerry Was Called A Flip Flopper?
    zasel
    by zasel  4-4-2007    1
I remember in 2004 when the Republicans loved to smear Kerry as being a "flip flopper." I guess they had a change of heart about the meaning of the term. They have Mitt Romney, who sold himself as a champion of gay rights, and a woman's right to choose when he ran against Ted Kennedy in the Massachusetts senate race. They have John McCain who decried the hateful rhetoric of Pat Roberton and Jerry Falwell, and now falls all over himself trying to please them and their parishioners. And now we have "America's Mayor" Rudy Giuliani trying to sell himself as a conservative. A man married three times, a huge supporter of gay rights, a man dedicated to a woman's right to choose and other liberal favourites. Now that he wants to be president, he claims he is not in favour of gay marriage but supports same-sex unions and benefits. He says he still supports a woman's right to choose, but also says he would appoint strict constructionist judges to the courts. Flip flop anyone?

    A Woman Worthy of Tribute

Elizabeth Edwards is a woman to be admired. She is facing much uncertainty, pain and God knows what else. But she has decided that her husband's quest for the presidency is so important that she insists on carrying on as long as she is capable of doing so. John Edwards must have been torn between the true deep devotion he has for his wife, and whether or not he should end his campaign. From what I have heard from a person who knows them well, John was totally prepared to ditch the campaign, but his Elizabeth insisted that she wanted to be part of bringing positive change to the country while she still can, and urged her husband to go for it. I have no doubt that if Elizabeth's condition should take a turn for the worse, he will quit his campaign on a dime if necessary to be with her and support her.

For a guy who calls his campaign "The Straight Talk Express" Mr. McCain seems to be having an awful lot of trouble lately keeping his statements straight. This latest example is almost humourous if it was not so serious. This is just another example of how his need to cater to the Christian Right is causing him to sound confused about issues he already expressed opinions about. I liked McCain when he spoke from the heart, but now that he has decided the fundamentalist Christians are more important than his own integrity, this guy has lost my support for sure.

Hillary Clinton is sounding more like a hawk catering to her audience at AIPAC will not take attacking Iran off the table. She really wants things every which way. When she speaks to liberal or centrist groups she condemns the Iraq war. But when she speaks to conservative and hawkish groups such as AIPAC, she spreads her hawk wings for all to see. I really wanted to support her for president, but she is making it very difficult for me. She has still not said she regrets her decision to vote to give Bush the OK to attack Iraq. She says she wants to end politics as usual, and then goes about doing the usual politics.

I guess he really has come to believe he needs that conservative, right-wing base to get the nomination. Too bad he is losing so many centrist supporters like me in this effort. We are the voters who gave him so much credibility in the 2000 election and had hoped he would run again. Now, a lot of people like me are hoping he gets trampled in the primaries.
