POPSOutcry on Federal Same-Sex Benefits Mixed feelings on this one kids. Obama has been very reluctant to keep his promises to the LGBT community. He has kicked DADT to the back burner, and there is no indication of when he will begin the process of repealing DOMA. The natives are restless. I am still taking a wait and see attitude, and I do have fairly high hopes.......for now.

POPSWelcome to the World, Baby Palin (Oops, I Mean Johnston) I don't generally take any pleasure in the misfortune of others, but these people seem to revel in their trashiness. Somehow, Sarah wants to convince America that her family is the quintessential American family, and everyone else is just plain un-American. Thank you John McCain for putting "Country First" and losing this last presidential election and sparing the country such illustrious role models of how not to live our lives.

POPSIn the Land of Queen Esther This is part one of a two part video about Sarah Palin and her sincere yet, in my view, scary religious beliefs. For anyone considering voting for the McCain/Palin ticket, watching this video might give you a bit more food for thought.

POPSMSNBC Is Buzz Flashes "Media Putz of the Week" I have always preferred MSNBC for cable news coverage, as they seemed to be the least influenced by right-wing threats. Unlike Fox, who claims to be "Fair and Balanced" when in fact they are Republican shills, MSNBC was far more able to claim that mantle. However, it appears that MSNBC is getting nervous because the two hosts they have who are more left than right, have been garnering complaints from the Republican Committee and the McCain campaign. Compared with remarks that O'Reilly or Hannity make on a regular basis, Olbermann et al, are quite mild. And then again, Olbermann has been, up til this week, the only truly lefty commentator, while FOX is ALL Conservative ALL the Time. But MSNBC has demoted Olbermann as well as Chris Matthews because the RNC did not like the fact that they questioned Sarah Palins qualifications for office. My God, is there nowhere fair minded people can turn any longer?

POPSMistress Palin, the Alaskan Dominatrix Excellent piece explaining the knee jerk reaction caused by Palin's convention appearance. But the feeling by many "experts" is that she is gonna scare the shit out of independents and undecided voters who fear for their jobs and pocket books.

POPSChutzpah, With a Capital "CH" Can you believe the audacity of McCain? First he manipulates Obama into taking his trip to Iraq and Afghanistan, which also resulted in a successful European tour. When that worked out too well for Obama, McCain declared that his opponent was being presumptuous, and acting as if was already president of the United States. Now that Russia has stormed into Georgia, McCain decides to send Lieberman and Graham to Tblisi to try to work something out. On what authority will the traitor Lieberman, and Howdy Doody Graham discuss anything of substance, with any officials in Georgia? On top of which, Condie Rice, Madam Secretary herself, is on her way to Georgia to assess the situation. She, at the very least, speaks for the president. For whom do these two McCain puppets speak?

POPSA Verb Brief History of Mugabe This is a very brief article from Time Magazine, which I urge all of you to read. I found it difficult to clip because every word of this short article is relevant. It is hard to understand how the U.S. or any other country can stand to allow this monster to continue to hold onto power of these poor defenseless people. Oh yeah! I forgot. The people of Zimbabwe do not have oil under their feet, as do the people of Iraq.

POPSThe Conservtive Gov't of Canada is imitating the Bushies Canada has always been far more democratic than the U.S. when it concerns access to information and transparency in government. Not perfect, for sure, but terrific compared to some of the tricks used in my home country of the U.S. But since the Conservative government, which is essentially made up of remnants of the failed Reform Party, has come to power, they have done everything in their power to imitate the machinations of the Bush administration and its policies of secrecy and outright lying. This article explains how they have now, without any notice whatsoever, closed down the access to information database that is used by journalists and the public to track the goings on in government. Canada must dump Stephen Harper and his gang of regressive assholes, and bring back transparency in government before the entire system turns into a carbon copy of the Bush administration. Harper has said his political hero is George W. Bush.

POPSThe New York TImes Scolds Hillary for Demeaning the Campaign
Even though the New York Times has previously endorsed Hillary in her run for the Democratic presidential nomination, they now seem to be reconsidering due to her tactics. The editorial board is disgusted with her use of Rove-like tactics against Senator Obama, in a "win at all cost" campaign that is making both candidates look bad in the eyes of the voting public. I am not one of those folks clamoring for Hillary to drop out of the race. She certainly has the right to hang-in there up to the convention if she that is what she wishes to do. After all, these are called "nominating conventions" for a reason. They are NOT called "coronations." But if she continues in the race she should at least fight fair, and not throw the kitchen sink at Obama, and begin making the arguments McCain and his campaign will be adopting in the general election. For example on at least two occasions she has essentially said that McCain is better equipped to be president than is Obama. That is just a b

POPSWillie Nelson Wants to See Bush Impeached
Country singer Willie Nelson wants to impeach Bush and "Throw the bastards out." However, he does not see the Democrats as a viable alternative considering how they have not done a thing to change direction in Iraq and keeps caving into Bush. He feels the deck is stacked against the people. Ya know what? I think he has a good point. The only hope I think the county really has right now is to elect Senator Obama as president. I honestly do not know if he will be a good president or not. However, I really believe he has the potential to be a transformational political figure and we should give him a chance to live up to that potential. He is the only candidate on the scene who can move the nation in a positive direction emotionally, and motivate them to engage themselves in the election, which is something very much lacking up 'til now. I honour the work Hillary has done and continues to do as a senator, but as president she would be back to the future.

POPSToo Bad Canadians Can't Vote in the U.S. It seems that if Canadians had the opportunity to vote in the United States, there would be no need for the Republicans to waste their money on running a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The Democrats would have a landslide victory no matter which Democrat wins the nomination. As an American living in Canada, I vote in every election via absentee ballot. Maybe I could send for a whole slew of them. Nah! That's too much like what a Republican would try to get away with. :-)

POPSAre The Iowa Caucuses a Fraud? This article from Truthdig kinda, sorta, explains how the caucuses work. The author insists the entire process is a promotional and marketing fraud. Read the entire article and then decide. Or, forget the whole thing and just go along for the ride.

POPSThis High School Prom Has Two Prince's At last! The High School royal couple is not necessarily of opposite gender. I have nothing against the King and Queen of the prom concept, but I always felt that what if a same-sex couple entered? Why couldn't they be in the running as well, and be elected as the couple that exemplifies their school? Well, once again progressive California has come through for us. Or should I say, the progressive area of California. Is anyone surprised it didn't happen in Massachusetts first?

POPSAll Hillary - All the Time With only two months until the Iowa caucuses, and Hillary still very much the formidable front runner, it will be a rare occurrence when her name is not mentioned or highlighted in all things relating to American politics. Can she stand the heat she has been expecting through many years of preparation for this contest?. The contest of her life? This is gonna be a fascinating race to watch, and as the song goes, "It's Only Just Begun."

POPSObama Fails Crucial Gay Test Well, it appears that Obama has made up his mind. The concerts take place this weekend, and McClurkin remains on the program. Obama has made his choice; that he will not choose, and let the homophobe appear while at the same time, offering time to a pro-gay minister. Seems to me if Obama cannot make the correct moral decision for fear of upsetting bigots, than he certainly is in no position to make decisions about other issues as well. This from a man who has faced discrimination his entire life. A different kind of politician? I fear not.

POPSFinally, Rudy's 9/11 Lies are Being Exposed I've been waiting impatiently, for Mr. Giuliani's lies to begin catching up with him. He has been running all over the country claiming to be an "expert on terrorism," and Islamofascism. Some voters, outside the New York metropolitan area, are falling for his story hook, line and sinker. But now, his own words given during testimony he gave to the 9/11 commission are leaking into the media, and it tells a very different story. It presents a person who knows virtually nothing about terrorism, al Qaeda or bin Laden. He proves the falsity of his claims concerning the inadequate radios his fire fighters were forced to use that fateful day, along with other information that paints a very different picture from the one he has been unveiling for the public during the campaign.
4
POPSIf Obama Really Respects Gays, He's Gotta Can This Guy I realize Senator Obama is getting desperate in trying to staunch the roller coaster of Hillary Clinton in the primary campaign, but he has got to be more careful about who he welcomes into his fold as spokespeople. McClurkin is a self-loathing homosexual who uses his blackness and his religion as a way of salving his own self-inflicted guilt for being homosexual, and has convinced himself that all us sickos can be cured of this horrible disease. I am hoping Mr. Obama will immediately sever his relationship with this dangerous a-hole. I know Hillary appears to be taking the bulk of the Black vote, but he cannot appear to be desperate, or he will really lose all credibility, which is something thus far, he has plenty of.

POPSLarry Craig Breaks His Promise and Refuses to Resign His Senate Seat First he's guilty then he's not. He announces he's gonna quit and then he stays. The Republicans in the Senate are having apoplexy over this guy, who they thought they would be well rid of at the end of September, but he has decided to stay out the full his remaining term. So, now the Republicans have another worry on their plate for next year's elections, which is shaping up to be a nightmare for their party. Several high profile senators and congresspersons are not going to run for another term. There are scandals being investigated, and now Senator Craig says he is gonna stay and keep his sordid story on the front burner right through to November 08. It couldn't happen to a nicer group of pols.

POPSDo Ya Think Connecticutians Have Had It With Holy Joe? It was only a matter of time before the good citizens of Connecticut realized their mistake in electing Holy Joe as an independent-democrat. He worked very hard at convincing his fellow Connecticutians that he was really a Democrat at heart, but since he had his nomination stolen from him he was forced to run as an independent in order to continue serving his constituency. He even went so far as to criticize the Iraq war during the campaign, only to become one of the biggest hawks on the Bush team on Congress. Now they are stuck with him for another 5 years.

POPSRepublican Racist Campaing Tactics are BAAACK! The Republicans just can't help themselves. They continue to use racist tactics in order to try to win favour with their party base during campaigns. Now certain candidates for the Republican presidential nomination or blaming "illegal immigrants" which translates into Hispanics, for the alleged rise in crime in some of the cities around the country. Of course, they just happen to choose to ignore the fact that crime rates are actually coming down, because that would be somewhat inconvenient to their point. Will the country finally realize the hatefulness of these tactics and see them for what they are, or will the subtlety escape them, and allow the fearmongering to grab their vote. Remember Willie Horton in the 1988 presidential election. Many believe it is what cost Michael Dukakis the presidency.

POPSRudy Trying to Play Nice with the Times Giuliani has been taking a bath in the media these days with tremendously negative reports about him, his wife, his personal life, his political manipulations, etc, etc, etc. And yet, uncharacteristically he is being very gentle in his criticism, especially of the New York Times, who has, to my knowledge no big fan of Mr. Giuliani. I think he knows there is much more out there to be reported, and he is trying to smooth things over with the media in the hope that they don't go hog wild on his ass.

POPSMitt Tries to Glad Hand Iraq Vet Mitt Romney was approached by an Iraq vet who proceeded to respectfully ask the presidential candidate some questions about the Iraq war. Romney offered him some stock talking points, but when asked a specific questions, turned his back and walked away. The vet felt highly insulted. Once again, Mitt is showing himself to be the rich boy, out to buy the presidency of the United States with his money, and to fuck with the people including the vets fighting the war he supports.

POPSMugabe Claims He Is A Victim President Robert Mugabe has turned Zimbabwe into a hell hole for most of its inhabitants. He has run murderous rule over his minions and is considered by many to be a far worse dictator than Saddam Hussein could ever dream of being. Now, this guy is claiming to be a victim of Western and local opponents who are trying to end his rule. Poor guy. I think maybe the two presidents, Bush and Mugabe should get together and cry on each others shoulders over the fact that they are so misunderstood. I'll volunteer to hold the towel.

POPSAre The People of Connecticut Happy With Their Decision? I hope the people of Connecticut are satisfied with their undying support for Joe Lieberman in the last election. The Dems voted against him in the primary, so instead of accepting his party's decision, he decided to run as an independent. No matter how much the people were warned that this guy was no longer a democrat at heart, they fell for his loyalty bullshit and re-elected him. Now he says he caucuses with democrats but holds meeting with the top republican leadership to come up with ways stymie the democrats efforts. He is entitled, of course, to his own beliefs about the war in Iraq, but to claim that he is an independent democrat and then to caucus secretly with the republicans against them is just too much.

POPSNixon Thought Thompson Was Dumb Richard Nixon was very unhappy with the choice of Fred Thompson as minority counsel during the Watergate hearings because he thought he wasn't too bright to put it politely. It should be interesting to see how this guy actually fairs once he finally decides to enter the race. My bet is that he gets knocked out very early.

POPSElzabeth Edwards Gently Slams Coulter Elizabeth Edwards called into Chris Matthews' Hardball political talk show on MSNBC last night and politely asked her to stop using such personal attacks against her husband and other individuals she happens to disagree with. All Coulter could come up with is accusing Mrs. Edwards of telling Ann she should no longer write books and not talk at all. Even Chris Matthews jumped in and told Coulter that is not at all what Mrs. Edwards was suggesting. Coulter is a mean-spirited shrew who adds nothing positive to the ongoing political debate and discussion. She is purely a hatemongerer who, sadly, makes a lot of money off a public that pays good money to read her books due to the sensationalism involved. What an indictment about the priorities and values of some of our citizens.

POPSLieberman Is losing support of those who followed him It seems that Holy Joe has finally crossed the line from someone who war supporters felt had the right views for protecting America into someone who even they say has gone too far in advocating war with Iran. The guy is totally over the top. He has been determined to work with the neo-Cons who believe in the PNAC and is always way to interested in protecting Israel over and above his interest in his own country, the USA. I support Israel as well, but not over the interests of my own country. The guy has become a Zionist fanatic.
3
POPSLieberman Feels the Joe-mentum Towards War With Iran Senator Lieberman said he support military action against Iran because of their involvement in terrorism in Iraq, Palestine etc. Once again, Holy Joe goes against his constituency and the vast majority of the American people by urging the president to invade a sovereign nation, even though our troops are tied up in Iraq, where they are bleeding and dying in an illegal war. I wonder how many of his supporters who put him over the top in the last election still believes they did the right thing.

POPSEdwards Is Really Getting A Cut From The Media Stylists I am not actually supporting Mr. Edwards in this campaign, but I still believe in fairness for all candidates. I am so fed up with the way the corporate, mainstream media continues to exert its biased influence on elections. We all know about Mr. Edwards ill conceived haircut, but it's been reported ad nauseum and there is no one on the face of the earth who hasn't heard about the $400 cost, that has any concern about this election. But, once again, instead of covering issues, and ideas, the media hangs on to old news of little or no consequence. They are doing with Edwards and they will do it will the other candidates, meanwhile keeping the public uninformed about the real issues facing the voters. This is positively disgusting.

POPSArthur Branch Should Stay As Law & Order D.A. The Republicans are obviously desperate to find a candidate that might actually be acceptable to their base. The current crap, I mean crop of candidates appear to be pleasing no one. Even Giuliani is beginning to lose support, and it is my bet that the more that comes out about his phony claim to being the hero of 9/11 and his insipid personal and business conduct, the less he will shine. So now the Republicans are looking for another movie star who might physically look the part, and sound conservative and sage enough to fool the electorate as did that great Hollywood actor, Saint Ronald of Reagan. If Branch/Thompson does jump into the race with both feet, he will more than likely find himself standing in political quicksand.

POPSCould Bush Be Going Full CIrcle on Ira? This report from the Guardian appears to suggest that Mr. Bush is coming full circle on Iraq. He began with a sham attempt to get U.N. cooperation for his illegal war. He stymied the successful efforts of the U.N. arms inspectors and ordered them out because he was not happy that they were reporting that Saddam had been cooperating with them, and that there, thus far, was no indication there were the stores of weapons the U.S. was insisting were there. Now that Bush has been proven entirely wrong, and his lies have come back to haunt him as well as be responsible for the deaths of almost 3,500 of our youngest and finest young people, and the maiming of many thousands more, he is planning to go back to the U.N. to finagle a way to get them to take over his horrible and tragic mess. Oh how I long to see this man and his pals Cheney and Rumsfeld et al dragged in front of the Hague and tried for being the war criminals they are.

POPSThe Hero Mayor of 9/11 is Slowly Being Unmasked Mr. Giuliani is always willing to take bows for being the great hero of 9/11, but as time passes and certainly in the full light of the upcoming presidential election campaign, the truth about "America's Mayor" will come to the fore and the country will see what a card carrying phony this guy really is. Just look at the people with whom he is associated. Just one example; Bernie Kerick. Need I say more?

POPSHillary's Hands Are In The Same Deep Corporate Pockets This is a fairly lengthy article from The Nation, but it is a very worthwhile need. It, sadly, confirms my suspicion that there really is not major difference between the two political parties, because essentially, they are beholden to the same, deep, corporate politics as each other. As long as big business has the ability to influence election campaign with big bucks, it will never be a totally honest system. I believe the U.S. should do what Canada did several years ago. Ban ALL political contributions by big business. Without the constant chasing for corporate bucks, the people actually have a chance for their voice to be seriously listened to.

POPSI Find Mr Thompson's Excuses A Bit Lame Mr. Thompson was asked a very clear question, and he gave a very clear answer. I was watching and listening to the debate very carefully, and I had no doubt he understood what was being asked. The very wording of his response would indicate he knew what was asked. Only after the feces hit the fan did he start finding excuses, including medical problems, as his reason for not understanding the question. Those kinds of excuses cause me to have medical problems. They make me feel sick.

POPSGiuliani's Heroic Shine is Going to Pale Very Soon My bet is that Mr. Giuliani's 9/11/ hero status is going to go down very quickly in the rest of the county once the full details of his mismanagement of the entire crisis is exposed. He has been shamelessly taking bows and blowing kisses to the crowds as SuperMayor, but when the facts are actually known, he will sink like a stone. He ran New York City like a fascist dictator during his 8 years in office, and was reviled by most New Yorkers for the way he treated minorities and allowed the police to have a free hand even when abuse was alleged and then proven. He actually excused acts of brutality in the name of law and order. My friend, before you consider voting for Mr. Giuliani, please learn as much as you can about him. You might change your mind.

POPSMcCain Continues to Sink to New Depths The "straight talker" keeps saying the wrong things. His campaign is catering to the very people he so reviled in his 2000 race. I suppose since he sees this as his last chance to become president he is willing to say or do whatever it takes to take that seat in the oval office. I hope you will take the time to read the entire letter Cecile Richards sent to McCain and his campaign big wigs.

POPSSo Much Promose Went Down the Iraq Drain Tony Blair began his career with tremendous promise, and for the most part, lived up to the hype and hope. But then came George Bush and his Iraq mis-adventure, which for some reason, he was able to convince the prime minister to support. Most of his country turned against Blair over Iraq and he has never been able to recover. Although his party won the last election, Mr. Blair's personal popularity sunk, and the public became obsessed with his need to go. Amazing how one's political fortunes can turn on one issue after so many years. I am sure he will thank Mr. Bush for the rest of his life, as he kicks his own ass for ever going along with his invasion of Iraq.

POPSGovernor Spitzer of New York Keeps an Election Promise of Equality Elliot Spitzer, the new governor of New York State has kept an election campaign promise and has introduced legislation permitting same-sex marriage in his state. There are questions as to whether or not it will pass the legislature, but the governor seems determined to see equality happen in New York. Times, they are a changin'.
