POPSCanada kowtowing to U.S. Border Intimidation The U.S. has apparently intimidated Canada into banning people from crossing into their country if they appear on a list showing they are political activists or protesters. I could not effectively clip this lengthy first person report, but I urge you to read it in its entirety.

POPSIs The KKK Taking Advantage of the Immigration Controversy? Sometimes a rally is not what it seems to be. In this case there is good reason to believe that local KKK groups decided to involve themselves in an immigration rally thus sparking a near confrontation that could have led to violence. As it turns out, the worst of it was verbal.

POPSHas This Government Lost Its Heart Completely? We constantly hear from this administration that we support our troops. As a matter of fact they claim that any criticism against the war or the president's handling of it, is tantamount to not supporting our troops and unpatriotic. But now we hear that the immigrant wife of one of the soldiers missing and feared dead in Iraq is being threatened with deportation even though her husband has applied for a green card for her. Wouldn't showing some compassion and making an exception to the strict rules in this woman's case be in a very real sense, supporting our troops with action and not just empty words?

POPSKyl is Gonna Hasten the Split Between Bush and the Republicans John Kyl's apparent change of heart on the immigration issue has strict conservatives up in arms. They look at his new stance as a betrayal to everything that is holy in the conservative play book on this particular subject. To say they were shocked would be to understate the general reaction. This could lead to a tremendous rift in the Republican party and stimulate even more of a desertion from Bush by his own party than originally predicted.

POPSArresting a 6-yeaer-old? Aw, get real! Is this nuts or what? What was the big emergency that a 6-year-old and to be traumatized in such a brutal manner? It's hardly as if this was a life and death emergency where a delay of an hour or so was gonna make any difference whatsoever. Some people let their badge get in the way of their judgment. I fear we are more and more turning into a jackboot society.

POPS1946 Black Stereotypes on Film May Make a Come Back Although, in its day, "Song of the South" was a remarkable cinematic achievement, it did promote what was then considered to be harmless stereotyping of blacks in totally fictional scenarios. Disney is being hounded by fans of the film to re-release it on video and Disney is carefully considering the idea. I personally think it would be fine if Disney lives up to its statements that the film, if re-released, must be done in a manner that explains the context of the times and stresses the falseness of the images portrayed.

POPSI'm Sor Proud To Be A Native New Yawker Even though I moved to Canada in 1985, I am still a New Yorker at heart. The Justice's decision increases my pride in being born and raised in such a fair-minded and progressive city. So, I live in a country the permits same-sex marriage, and I can go home to my family and be legally recognized as a married couple with my partner, Arnold. That's quite a relief after being together for over 25 years.
