POPSOutcry on Federal Same-Sex Benefits Mixed feelings on this one kids. Obama has been very reluctant to keep his promises to the LGBT community. He has kicked DADT to the back burner, and there is no indication of when he will begin the process of repealing DOMA. The natives are restless. I am still taking a wait and see attitude, and I do have fairly high hopes.......for now.

POPSGay bishop to kick off Inauguration events It doesn't totally erase the fact that Rick Warren will be doing the invocation and the actual inauguration, but this is at least an important acknowledgment of the new president's support of the LGBT community.

POPSThinking About Fags A wonderful tongue-in-cheek article about a child's and young adults mis-perceptions of homosexual men. I wish commentaries such as this were around when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s.

POPSSpanish queen breaks silence - and upsets gay groups Although Spain has legalized same-sex marriage a few years ago, their aging monarch has decided she doesn't consider what gays do as marriage. She says it should be called differently. She also says being gay is nothing to celebrate or to be proud of. As one might guess, the gay rights organizations in her country are pissed-off royally.

POPSMore Antigay Remarks From Jerry Lewis Jerry Lewis has always been known to be a rather mean-spirited individual. He has made many misogynistic remarks, as well as anti-gay comments over the years, as well as other socially offensive actions and statements which are too numerous to go into right now. The problem is, that the older he gets, the more cantankerous he becomes. He was once largely panned by the press in Montreal when he insulted vilely a female journalist who did not post a particularly favourable review of his performance.

POPSMcDonald’s Caves In To Anti-Gay Group Demands Sadly, Mickey D has decided to permit a homophobic hate group dictate their corporate policies. Giving into these boycotts does nothing but encourage groups, such as this one, to continue to strong-arm major businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians. I am hoping my GLBT friends will refuse to do any business with McDonalds.

POPSConnecticut Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage This is such great news. Little by little, the U.S. is beginning to catch up with Canada, and other countries who are finally realizing that in a democracy ALL men and women and equal. This should never be subject to social interpretation.

POPSElderly gays forging new alliances There are over 2.5 million gay seniors in the U.S. All of them have lived through the days when being gay meant facing discrimination, job loss, familial animosity, alienation of friends etc. But times have changed, and gay seniors have new recognition as important members of society. Sage, is a new organization, supported by AARP that helps gay seniors live the kind of lives to which they are entitled. Finally, elders who happen to be gay, can join us younger gays in taking our place in the new freedoms, being granted us in the ever expanding acceptance and tolerance of society. Things are far from perfect, but we are definitely getting there.

POPSChurch Gives Sanctuary to Gay Man and His Family Even down south.......waaaay down south, one can find bastions of welcome and support in Christian congregations. It both warmed my heart, and angered me, to read of the struggles this family had to endure, and yet showed the motivation, love, fortified and determination, to bring their children up in the religion they both cherished along with teaching them about understanding, compassion and the sanctity of true love.

POPSWe’ll Marry Each Other as Often as Needed I wish I could have clipped the entire article. So I just included as much as I could. I urge you to read the entire piece, as it is absolutely beautiful, humourous, touching and honest. It is entirely apropos at this time, as next week, August 31, my partner Arnold and I are getting legally married here in our home city of Montreal. Same-sex marriage became legal in Canada in 2005. We waited until this year, because Sept 10th shall mark the 25th anniversary of our original unification ceremony we celebrated in Boston in 1983. What better way to renew our vows than to do so while finally getting married legally, in a country that recognizes and honours our relationship?

POPSAn Old Law Dies So Same-Sex Marriage Can Thrive Massachusetts has repealed it 1913 law that refused recognition of marriages performed in their state that would not be recognized in a couple's home state. New York, and California will also recognize same-sex marriages in this manner. This will probably result in many lawsuits in states that have banned gay marriage, by demanding that their marriages from Massachusetts and California be honoured at home, claiming that it is unconstitutional to refuse recognition of marriages from other states. Anyhoo, this is another step forward towards marriage equality in the U.S. and it is about time.

POPS4 Teenagers Are Arrested in Attack at Gay Shelter As much as things have improved in society in its acceptance of glbt people, these kinds of horrible incidents occur on a daily basis. It is important for the members of the gay community to NOT fall into a state of complacency, because homophobia is still alive and well.

POPSJesse Helms is Dead Mike Signorile definitely speaks for many LGBT people and our friends in his July 4th blog posting. Although, as I said in a piece I clipped yesterday, I do not take joy in the death of another human being. But in the case of Helms, it is hard to find even a core of sympathy or remorse at his passing. In his professional lifetime, he sent many innocent and good people to their deaths due to his hatemongering and homophobia. If he could not cry for us, how can we cry for him?

POPSGay Unions Shed Light on Gender in Marriage My clips do not come close to describing the differences found between the two types of relationships. I would encourage anyone interested in this topic to read the entire piece, which is not very long at all. It delineates many of the differences along with the perceived reasons for them.

POPSCalifornia Says YES to Same-Sex Marriage Great news, indeed! Even greater news is that Ahnold has promised to abide by the court's decision, and NOT support the upcoming state constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage. So, this is a done deal. This comes at a very interesting time for me. My partner and I are getting married on August 31. We are a same-sex couple, and we live in Canada where gay marriage came into being in 2005 (country-wide.) So, naturally, we are really thrilled to know that finally the U.S. seems to be taking a step in the progressive social direction. It is certainly about time.

POPSIt's Never Too Late for Romance and Marriage
Stories like this really warm my heart. I am sure the fact that my partner of 26 years, Arnold and I are getting married in Montreal on August 31st has something to do with my personal reaction to this report. I am so proud to live in a country that finally recognizes that same-sex couples are just as much in love, and dedicated as heterosexual pairs. Anyone who knows Arnold and me knows how very much in love we are, and how we share our lives together completely. These two ladies are another example of how love between two people is special no matter what sexual orientation is involved. As an American living in Canada, I am always saddened to see how far behind my home country is from Canada and other countries in the world who are finally recognizing the rights of gays and lesbians in their society. Yes, a great deal of progress has been made in the U.S. but there appears to be a real hard-core resistance to granting equal rights to homosexual couples.

POPSHollywood Still Forcing Gay Actors to Remain Closeted Hollywood producers and studios continue to have little faith in movie fans, and believe that if an actor comes out as gay, they will stay away in droves. This problem does not seem to exist in Canada, Britain, France etc. I can't help but wonder why it is that the U.S, even in these allegedly enlightened times, continues to be fearful of gays. I know the original Puritanical basis of the country is often blamed, but we must remember, those Puritans came from the same countries that are now much more accepting of homosexuals.
3
POPSAnother Republican Hatemonger I am so sick of the hatemongers who exist in our government. I am even more upset that so many of them seem to be Republicans. It is because of people like this that I left the Republican party. This party has been taken over by right-wing Christian bigots who want to change our country into their theocracy, no matter which group they have to put at grave danger in order to do so. I hope most fair-minded Americans will remember this come next November.

POPSAlec & baby brother Steve have differing views on samd-sex marriage Normally, celebrity opinions don't register with me. But in this case I find it interesting that two close brothers could be at such political odds. Alec, totally favours same-sex marriage while Steve quotes the bible. Oh well, at least the fundies can't talk about the incredible lack of morality in Hollywood. All they have to do is look towards little Stevie Baldwin.

POPSGay Royalty and Midevil Punishment King Edward II was gay in the 1300's, thus proving that homosexuals actually did exist before we 20th century heathens invented it, and that it existed in the "best" of families. Take that you Christian Fundamentalists! :-)

POPSHarvey Milk Day....HOORAY!! It's a joy to hear that California may establish a state holiday in the name of civil rights leader and the first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk who was assassinated in 1978. Harvey is a hero to the gay community, and yet he fought for the rights of all people, not just his fellow gay Americans. This is another example of how attitudes are changing in the U.S. Even though it gets discouraging at times, the country is on the road to accepting gays, and lesbians as equal to every other American.

POPSSwedish opposition may force gay marriage vote Sweden seems to be getting ready to join the few countries in the world who permit same-sex marriage. The numbers continue to grow including those who permit marriage and civil unions. But the good ol' US of A is standing firm on its discriminatory policies against gay and lesbian citizens.

POPSNew Hampshire Civil Unions are a Hit It warms my heart to welcome another state into the group that permits Civil Unions between same-sex couples, along with Massachusetts, which remains the only state to permit actual legal gay marriage. In the past few years the resistance to GLBT rights and same-sex couple recognition is waning. It is only a matter of time that couples such as Arnold and I will be able to have our partnerships recognized in every state of the union. Of course, since we live in Canada (although we are both American citizens) we are able to legally marry, and we will be doing so next September, but it will be nice when all our brethren south of the border will have the same recognition and respect.

POPSMr. Huckabee Should Keep His Word to AIDS Mom Mike Huckabee made some pretty intolerant statements in the past about people living with AIDS. He claims he was misquoted yet refuses to renounce his original statements. Ryan White's mom has asked to meet with Mr. Huckabee and he agreed to have such a rendezvous, but after 29 days he still has not responded to requests for a date.

POPSParkinson's Medicinal Treatment Turns Men Gay? I really have no particular opinion on this story as my knowledge of these matters is rather limited. But frankly, this is the first I ever heard of such a reaction from this kind of medication. Does anyone have any further information of a personal or clinical nature?
6
POPSLarry Craig's Denials Continue to Be Denied The louder he claims about his being straight to the core, the more men come out and report having had sexual encounters with him. Larry Craig just doesn't get it, does he? He really seems to believe that his denials, no matter how clear the evidence, that he is not gay, will obscure all allegations of his practices in private. As I have said in the past, I do not believe in entrapment, and I am not please with the way the police proceeded with his case, however, his constant lying does not help his cause, and it only, once again, shows how much self-loathing he possesses.

POPSUsing A Child's Voice For the Sake of Bigotry The Supreme Court of New Jersey has declared that the marriage laws in the state discriminate against gays and lesbians and has ordered the legislature to change the law to make it inclusive. The anti-gay marriage forces have stooped to using the voices of children to scare people into fighting against equality for gay and lesbian citizens.

POPSCanada Celebrates 40 years of Gay Rights Activism I am so proud to live in a country that has come so far in such a relatively brief period of time. Only 40 years ago consenting gay adults could be thrown in prison for engaging in sexual relations. Now we actually have same-sex marriage as the law of the land. Will our neighbours to the north ever lean the lesson that gays are people too?

POPSThis High School Prom Has Two Prince's At last! The High School royal couple is not necessarily of opposite gender. I have nothing against the King and Queen of the prom concept, but I always felt that what if a same-sex couple entered? Why couldn't they be in the running as well, and be elected as the couple that exemplifies their school? Well, once again progressive California has come through for us. Or should I say, the progressive area of California. Is anyone surprised it didn't happen in Massachusetts first?

POPSGay Tourism Means Big Bucks It was only a matter of time before the tourism industry in general picked-up on the fact that gay travelers can mean big bucks. Most hotels were ill prepared to deal with the niceties of accommodating same-sex couples. There was generally a sense of awkwardness and discomfort. But those days are fast becoming a thing of the past, as this article explains.

POPSObama Fails Crucial Gay Test Well, it appears that Obama has made up his mind. The concerts take place this weekend, and McClurkin remains on the program. Obama has made his choice; that he will not choose, and let the homophobe appear while at the same time, offering time to a pro-gay minister. Seems to me if Obama cannot make the correct moral decision for fear of upsetting bigots, than he certainly is in no position to make decisions about other issues as well. This from a man who has faced discrimination his entire life. A different kind of politician? I fear not.

POPSGays Burning Down California!! Wow. I had know idea us gays have so much power in this world. I thought it was hot shit when Falwell and Robertson blamed us for the attacks on 9/11, but now we're also responsible for the wild fires in California. Gays everywhere! It is time we claim our true power and take over this world which is rightly ours!!!

POPSItaly's Gay Infant Starts A Huge Controversy So Italy is in an uproar over a picture of an infant with a bracelet that says "Homosexual" on it, as part of a campaign to end discrimination against gays. It's obvious to me that this kid is a born troublemaker.
4
POPSIf Obama Really Respects Gays, He's Gotta Can This Guy I realize Senator Obama is getting desperate in trying to staunch the roller coaster of Hillary Clinton in the primary campaign, but he has got to be more careful about who he welcomes into his fold as spokespeople. McClurkin is a self-loathing homosexual who uses his blackness and his religion as a way of salving his own self-inflicted guilt for being homosexual, and has convinced himself that all us sickos can be cured of this horrible disease. I am hoping Mr. Obama will immediately sever his relationship with this dangerous a-hole. I know Hillary appears to be taking the bulk of the Black vote, but he cannot appear to be desperate, or he will really lose all credibility, which is something thus far, he has plenty of.

POPSRudy Throws Gays Overboard for Tony Perkins and His Religious Fanatics Rudy wants so desperately to be president that he does not care what or who he throws to the wolves in order to satisfy the religious fanatics in the country. Once a staunch defender of gays and gay rights, he now says he might support a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. I do not have to repeat all of the inconsistencies in Mr. Giuliani's campaign, but I am just presenting another new low in his ability and willingness to pander.
