TV Guide Hits the Skids
zasel
by zasel  12-8-2008    3
As a child born around the same time as television, I grew up with TV Guide as being my daily bible of all kinds of magic stuff on the tube. Every Sept, I would rush to the store to pick-up the Fall Preview Issue to research the brand new shows that would be premiering for the new season. Who'da thunk that 55 years later, the entire enterprise would be sold for a buck, with only a prayer that it will remain in print much longer? I found this article interesting and in a sense, nostalgic and decided to share it with my ClipMarks friends.

Rosie O'Donnell Attempts to Bring Back Variety TV
zasel
by zasel  11-25-2008    2
It's about time. Variety has been missing from our TVs for decades, and I for one have missed it. I wish Rosie lots of luck with her "audition" show Wednesday, with hopes that she will return on a weekly basis, along with other artists who are waiting in the wings for shows of their own.

Japan's Booming Sex Niche: Elder Porn
zasel
by zasel  7-3-2008    3
Any entrepreneurs here in the west, might take a lesson from the Japanese business world. Instead of paying our elderly their measly social security payments, perhaps we could offer them jobs in the porn industry. The money is great, and they can work mostly on their backs.

Hollywood Still Forcing Gay Actors to Remain Closeted
zasel
by zasel  4-24-2008
Hollywood producers and studios continue to have little faith in movie fans, and believe that if an actor comes out as gay, they will stay away in droves. This problem does not seem to exist in Canada, Britain, France etc. I can't help but wonder why it is that the U.S, even in these allegedly enlightened times, continues to be fearful of gays. I know the original Puritanical basis of the country is often blamed, but we must remember, those Puritans came from the same countries that are now much more accepting of homosexuals.

Jay Leno Apologizes for An Insensitive Remark
zasel
by zasel  4-3-2008
Jay does have a rather snarky sense of humour, but I have never known him to be anti-gay or homophobic in any manner whatsoever. But his snarkiness caught up with him while trying to go for the quick joke. However, he paid for it by the reaction from not only his guest, but the entire audience as well. At least the man had the balls to apologize.

Canada Hears What The U.S. Censored at Emmys
zasel
by zasel  9-17-2007    12
Only in the U.S. was Sally Field's comments about war censored as being inappropriate for audience ears on Fox. Here in Canada, where CTV ran the broadcast, her full comments were heard, and believe me, nothing at all of a sexual or inappropriate nature was said by Ms. Field. The word that Fox cut was goddamn. But, according to the FCC, goddamn is NOT a banned expression from broadcast TV. What the hell is going on in the states that free speech is so under attack?

Cartman, Kenny and Kyle Grow Into Media Giants
zasel
by zasel  8-28-2007    1
South Park has grown from a crudely animated "adult" cartoon into a powerhouse of marketing potential. It is hard to believe that this show will be starting its 12th season in October. I am a big fan of this show and I am happy to see that such anarchic and subversive humour is being accepted by mainstream audiences. It shows that there are a good number of thinking people out there in TV land.

More Digital Conversion On Its Way
zasel
by zasel  7-26-2007
I've been hearing about conversion of home entertainment systems for years. Now it seems to be starting in earnest. This article is quite fascinating and should give you a good idea of what the next couple years in home entertainment should be offering.

Barry's Copa is No More
zasel
by zasel  7-1-2007    1
The Copa Cabana was legendary to many people, especially those of us in show business. Even when I left the business due to illness at the age of 35, one of my greatest sadnesses was that I never had the chance to play the Copa. I have little doubt the name Copa Cabana will find its permanent mark in show business and music history.

I Guess Isaiah Just Wasn't Sorry Enough
zasel
by zasel  6-9-2007
No doubt Isaiah's f-bomb that he blasted at T.R. Knight on the Grey's Anatomy set, and then repeating at an awards show, were two examples of highly offensive and obnoxious behaviour. However, Mr. Washington really did pay a meaningful price by having to deal with enormously negative publicity etc. As a gay man, I despise the kind of hateful epithet that Washington aimed at Mr. Knight, but considering he was shown the scorn of the world, I think taking his job away is kinda overkill.

Beaver Flashing On Broadway
zasel
by zasel  6-5-2007
Jerry Mathers, also know as The Beaver, is on Broadway playing the part of Tracy Turnblad's dad. I saw the Broadway production and the part is not all that demanding, but Mathers is not known for his singing and dancing abilities, so I give him credit for accepting this challenge. Good luck, Beav.

Poland's "Jerry Falwell" bashes Tinky Winky as Being Gay
zasel
by zasel  5-29-2007    1
And here I thought that only Jerry Falwell was nuts enough to accuse a puppet on a children's television show of spreading moral decay by being gay. Obviously I was naive. Now Poland's Children's rights watchdog comes out with the same nonsense all these years later. The whole world is going nuts, I tell ya.

1946 Black Stereotypes on Film May Make a Come Back
zasel
by zasel  5-10-2007
Although, in its day, "Song of the South" was a remarkable cinematic achievement, it did promote what was then considered to be harmless stereotyping of blacks in totally fictional scenarios. Disney is being hounded by fans of the film to re-release it on video and Disney is carefully considering the idea. I personally think it would be fine if Disney lives up to its statements that the film, if re-released, must be done in a manner that explains the context of the times and stresses the falseness of the images portrayed.

Soldiers Are Denied the Chance to Hear Baez Sing For Them
zasel
by zasel  5-3-2007    2
The powers that be refuse to permit Joan Baez to appear with John Mellencamp at Walter Reed Hospital to entertain the injured troops. Is the fact that Ms. Baez has always been anti-war a problem for them? Many soldiers are anti-War too, and yet thanks to the military, they have to appear there every day. At least they should be allowed to hear one of the great musical artists of our day.

Gay Comedy Produced By Gays...How Unique
zasel
by zasel  4-22-2007    1
Finally a gay positive TV show presented from the perspective of the gay sensibility. Will and Grace broke the mold and made positive gay characters possible on a mainstream television sitcom. But the show was essentially straight people talking about us, and showing an audience their perception of gays. Now we have gays presenting their own perception of who they, or should I say we, are. I live in Canada, and I cannot get this new channel and the gay lifestyle channel on her cable and satellite grid is not scheduled, yet, to carry it. But the moment I an able to find a way to watch The Big Gay Sketch Show, you can be sure I will be doing so.

Rosie Might Have Been Wrong, But Is She Alone?
zasel
by zasel  4-5-2007    5
While some of Rosie's statements were definitely off the wall, she also made some valid points. But I DO agree, she went way too far. That being said, how come I don't read too many articles or loads of vitriol when the right-wing extreme conservatives make equally outrageous statements about situations or individuals? Sure, jump all over Rosie if ya want, I might even join you. But please, let's also do some jumping on Bill, Sean, Michael, etc, etc, etc.

Is Law & Order Aiming At The White House?
zasel
by zasel  3-12-2007
Fred Thompson is actually considering a run for the White House. How reassuring. The last time we had a mediocre actor in the Oval neo-Conservatism was introduced into the government. But then again, who knows; he might bring along as V.P. Sam Waterston to keep him on track.
