POPSNatural African beauty - the Miss Authentica contest
From the slideshow captions: "African women, don't lighten your skin. It's a gift from God." These lyrics are a line from a song specially commissioned for a beauty competition with a difference in Ivory Coast. Only women with natural, untreated skin - confirmed by skin experts - can enter the competition which goes by the name, Miss Authentica. The organisers hope to encourage women to stop using dangerous skin-bleaching products…and instead celebrate the beauty of their natural skin. Skin-bleaching is big business in much of Africa. Proof of this are the many posters of smiling, fair-skinned women holding up the latest pots and tubes of skin-whitening creams that adorn the continent's cities…75% of women in Ivory Coast use skin-whitening creams of some sort. Many continue to use the bleaching products despite being aware of the dangers. One of the most common ingredients is hydroquinone, which has been banned in some countries because of claims that it is carcinogenic.

POPSPersepolis I went to see this at the cinema last night. And I absolutely loved it. It's political. It's critical. It's naive. It's full of wisdom. It's funny. It's sad. Its message is simple. Its message is deep. Just wonderful!

POPSLook Into My Eyes This is Outlandish! No not the lyrics, they're fine, it's just the name of the band. Read the rest at source. Here's to not just looking into another person's eyes, but also for trying to see things through their eyes too. Peace to all and shine a light.

POPSForemost Irish Singer/Songwriter DIES. Read of an exception life This was an exceptional Man. He left school at 11.5 years. He was severely dyslexic. He could not READ nor WRITE with difficulty signing his name. Despite this, he was an exceptionally talented song writer. He had a most unusual voice and was best in duets particularly with his daughter. It was while working as a labourer that he came in contact with asbestos that has now killed him 35 years later. He knew he was dying but thought he had longer. Please go into his site and hear his new single for a flavour of how much poorer we are for his passing. If sufficient interest is shown, I'll post further clips on Christie.

POPSThe Saddest Sad Songs Of All Time! I picked a few of my favourites. See the list and lyrics at the site. I couldn't get through life without music as a backdrop. Where would we be without it? If you need a rest from politics, just copy/paste a title and go youtubing . Even sad songs can make you happy. I heard this song when I was a little girl and my Dad told me it was about a dog (that probably drowned) and I bawled my eyes out! I still do! :D   Anyway, remember. Jumping off cliffs not allowed! . ;) Clip Song (Not sad, even!)

POPSDoes a nation's mood lurk in its songs and blogs?
“And it’s going to change the social sciences; that to me is very clear.” ... From another site, http://wefeelfine.org/ , they pulled more than nine million sentences that used some form of the verb feel — as in “I feel relieved” — from 2.3 million blogs from 2005 to 2009.They then rated the psychological charge, or “valence,” of a significant subset of the words on a 10-point scale: from triumphant (8.82) and love (8.72) down to disgusted (2.45) and suicide (1.25). Some of the findings were expected. Sept. 11, 2001, was rock bottom, for instance. Others were less so: the day that Michael Jackson died also lowered people’s mood significantly. Christmas and Valentine’s Day regularly popped as positive times, although words like “guilty” were associated with Christmas and “waste” and “lonely” with Valentine’s Day. “Now, these are bloggers, and they certainly are not representative of everyone,” Dr. Dodds said. “But the pattern is very pronounced.”

POPS"Takin My Country Back" by Honky Tonkers for Truth Lyrics: Country music's got mammas and daddys, they got bar rooms and old heartbreak songs, but I'm here today to stand up and say how I feel about my home sweet home, what's left, what's right and what's wrong. 'N I'm takin' my country back. Son, you ain't been doin' her right. Oh, I been watchin' you and I don't like how you been treatin' my stars and stripes. You took out our jobs and sent 'em over-seas; now we owe billions to the red Chinese. You blew the budget and you bounced Iraq. So I'm takin' my country back. We had a bundle in the treasury drawer, more than there had ever been before, but every day we're down and deeper in debt. Maybe four years should be all you get.

POPSBertolt Brecht Quote Collage "Mack the Knife" or "The Ballad of Mack the Knife", originally "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer", is a song composed by Kurt Weill with lyrics by Bertolt Brecht for their music drama Die Dreigroschenoper, or, as it is known in English, The Threepenny Opera. It premiered in Berlin in 1928. A moritat (from mori meaning "deadly" and tat meaning "deed") is a medieval version of the murder ballad performed by strolling minstrels The Brecht-Weill version of the character was far more cruel and sinister, and has been transformed into a modern anti-hero. The opera opens with the moritat singer comparing Macheath (unfavorably) with a shark, and then telling tales of his robberies, murders, rapes, and arson.

POPStough time for music: TOWER RECORDS - OUT OF BUSINESS Tower Records and CBGB - bad news, same weekend...it's like we're taking all the heart and soul out of a heart and soul business (if there really is such a thing) Ibought my first CD at Tower Records-- it was Billy Joel- the double disc greatest hits-- i was probably 9-10-- in '85-'86- don't really remember which one-- but for me, Tower Records had the 'kid in the candy store' effect.

POPSDeaf Jam Determined to bring the deaf and hard-of hearing community into the music world, D-PAN has further partnered with the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. The university is championing ways to apply new wireless technology that will aid the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in a live concert setting, and augment their capacity to "feel" the music. Forbes has his eyes on the hearing-centric music festivals. "I would love to see myself and other deaf artists going out performing on stage. Like at Lollapalooza. I think people would think it's cool to see deaf artists signing."
