POPSUbuntu, create something that is stylish and stunning he notion of a strong Linux-based competitor to Windows and, to a lesser extent, Apple’s Mac OS X has been an enduring dream of advocates of open-source software. They champion the idea that software that can be freely altered by the masses can prove cheaper and better than proprietary code produced by stodgy corporations. Try as they might, however, Linux zealots have failed in their quest to make Linux mainstream on desktop and notebook computers. The often quirky software remains in the realm of geeks, not grandmothers. With Ubuntu, the devotees believe, things might finally be different.

POPSHow to keep your old PC alive Windows and most of the proprietary software requires more and more computer power as it's version increases. This results to new hardware all the time for us. POPSMade in Africa Brand gains Momentum As a brand consultancy in LA with strong ties to South Africa, we believe strongly in the success of a Made in South Africa brand and actively work to promote products from this region. Although not all consumer product sectors have found their voice, the global recognition of our hospitality, music, wine, marketing, graphic design and thinktank forums from South Africa will hopefully inspire other sectors to raise their profiles.

POPSDebian Operating Systems The latest release Debian 4.0r3 Etch (4.0 revision 3) was released on Feb 17. It contains a base system CD and 3 DVDs containing 18,000 free programs in 'Debian Packages' The programs in these packages can easily be installed and removed with the debian package manager. There are regular updates so packages can automatically be replaced with newer versions. When I started, the whole idea of a new operating system seemed hard to fathom, but it occurred to me that when I started with windows, I was at least as blind. The idea of having a wide range of programs at my fingertips, with the ability to try them and remove them with no catches if they were not what I wanted, was enough to make me switch, and I've been amazed at what I have found, generally developed and tested by people who wanted to contribute to an improvement. Now I have the ability to control the core of my system, and it's great motivation to learn about how a program really works.

POPSXP Starter Edition...Give Me Some Of That! Mary correctly points out that Microsoft is in a bit of a sticky wicket: either it shuts itself out of this market by preventing manufacturers of non-Vista capable hardware from distributing Windows XP, limits users to a stripped down version of an aging OS and/or gives XP another stay of execution. For those of us in Ed Tech eagerly awaiting a new crop of Atom-based cheap laptops, as well as the 2nd generation Intel Classmate making its way to mature markets, it’s certainly time to look elsewhere if Microsoft’s only offering will be XP Starter Edition.

POPSCanonical's new Ubuntu The past few releases of Ubuntu had become quite uninteresting, so this breath of fresh air is especially welcome. The standardization of the 3D desktop is a good thing because it'll allow more exposure. If the plug-and-play functionality works as advertised, it could convince more people to try Linux, since the biggest barrier (aside from software incompatibility) is hardware malevolence. I'm behind Canonical on this.

POPSLinux Mint - The Elegant Ubuntu
Open Source, Linux Mint is an offshoot of the Ubuntu Base Distribution. The operating system can be customised with a package repository that holds over 23000 programs, inluding source codes. It can be installed alongside windows, There is the need to learn some operating commands, but its handy to find out whats going on behind the screen. I didn't have a clue about Linux a few months ago, but the hardest thing was starting. I installed Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10, and started to play with some other variants including Ultimate, Ultimate Gamer, and Mint. I was having wso much fun, I burned out my RAM just after Christmas, (It was a Hot Day.) I've found answers to problems through the support communities, and I don't need to look for Programs or applications. The next base Upgrade will be named 8.04 Hardy Heron, and there is an upgrade faculity in the update manager. I thought I'd use Mint as an example . If I'm going to bring a Gutsty Gibbon to clipmarks I want it to be wearing a suit
