POPSYou Won't Believe Where That $700-Billion Bailout Figure Came From "We just wanted to choose a really large number." Carl Lavin over at Forbes.com, points out a fascinating paragraph buried in a story on his website late last week by Brian Wingfield and Josh Zumbrun. Brian Wingfield and Josh Zumbrun 09.23.08, 6:39 PM ET The more Congress examines the Bush administration's bailout plan, the hazier its outcome gets. At a Senate Banking Committee hearing Tuesday, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle complained of being rushed to pass legislation or else risk financial meltdown. In fact, some of the most basic details, including the $700 billion figure Treasury would use to buy up bad debt, are fuzzy. "It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number." http://www.forbes.com/businessinthebeltway/2008/09/23/bailout-paulson-congress-biz-beltway-cx_jz_bw_0923bailout.html

POPSRussian Military Spending: $50 Billion New York Times story adds that certain U.S. military officials are "unimpressed" by Russia's plans. One told the times that “these programs have long been in the works. They are not new plans.” As we noted here, http://www.forbes.com/beltway/2008/09/30/aerospace-defense-washington-biz-wash-cz_atg_0930beltway.html , President Bush recently signed a defense appropriations bill totaling $488 billion.

POPSBibles by Victoria Jackson Born Aug. 2,1959 in Miami, Florida, Victoria was raised in a Bible-believing, piano-playing, gymnastic home with no TV. Her dad was a gym coach, so she competed in gymnastics from ages 5-18. Cheerleader.. homecoming queen.. attended Florida Bible College; received a gymnastic scholarship to Furman University, attended Auburn University one year, and ended up in Hollywood, CA via summer stock in Alabama, where she met Johnny Crawford (The Rifleman) who promptly put her in his night club act and sent her a one-way ticket to the show-biz capital. Following her 20 appearances with Johnny Carson, she starred in many movies and TV shows, most notably six seasons on "Saturday Night Live." It's a shame SNL has ruined their show. There was a time when it catered to all audiences.

POPSFake Security Software In Millions Of Computers Oh Boy! A new computer scam. ""In terms of the number of people who potentially have this in their machines, it's tens of millions," Weafer said." It was also impossible to tell how much cyberthieves made off with but "affiliates" acting as middlemen to convince people to download the software were believed to earn between 1 cent per download and 55 cents. TrafficConverter.biz, which has been shut down, had boasted that its top affiliates earned as much as $332,000 a month for selling scam security software, according to Weafer."

POPSGoogle buys Jaiku (a twitter competitor) I'm a huge twitter fan and so haven't checked out Jaiku, but from what I understand it's basically the same idea. You send and receive short updates with your list of friends. Very interesting that the big G swooped in and picked up Jaiku and not Twitter. Maybe Biz & Ev weren't looking to sell?

POPS Iranian Twitterers Sidestep News Blackout
"Since the election, we have heard reports that users in Iran are having difficulties accessing Facebook," said Barry Schnitt, Facebook spokesman. "This is disappointing, especially at a time when Iranians are turning to the internet as a source of information about the recent election." Judging by tweets since Friday's election, the censorship didn't slow some users down. Many then tweeted to share their tactics. "Iranelection" was the top Twitter trend for the past few days, and a message thread led by "Persiankiwi" appeared to be orchestrating hacker attacks on official Iran websites while firing off updates on developments in the streets. "We are going offline to get a phone free for calling out," Persiankiwi tweeted at midday. "We are also moving location - too long here - is dangerous." A subsequent Persiankiwi tweet reads: "Attacked in streets by mob on motorbikes with batons - firing guns into air - street fires all over town - roads closed."

POPSJake Tapper's ACORN Posts at his ABC Political Punch Blog ABC's Charles Gibson --- "Unaware" of Five Day-Old ACORN Controversy, Senate Vote to De-Fund ACORN Gibson, as John Stephenson and P.J. Gladnick of NewsBusters noted in September of last year, as a result of his interview with GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, twisted her words, with the help of selective editing, to portray her as some kind of out of touch, excessively religious, militaristic rube. With the above interview, no editing is required. Who’s out of touch now, Charlie? Cross-posted at NewsBusters.org. _______________________________________ UPDATE: Rush and some NB commenters are speculating that Gibson may have said “I haven’t heard about it” because the only other alternative would be to say a completely damning “We didn’t think it was important.” Gibson’s laugh at the beginning of his response does seem to be a bit nervous.

POPSYou don't say! This is a quote from Biz Stone, co-founder of twitter, in a letter he recently emailed to users. Like i've always said, anyone following thousands of people is actually following no one.

POPS Uncle Sam’s Collections Continue Their Steep Drop It is ironic to say the least that Congress and the Obama administration are glorifying the idea of a “public option” that would ultimately lead to government-run health care while Treasury receipts continue to shrink. If the private health insurance market disappears, so will its taxes. To name just one example, Aetna’s recorded income tax expense on its financial statements for 2005-2008 (including state and local taxes) averaged roughly $900 million per year. Put the company’s health insurance segment out of business, and a large portion of those taxes would stop coming in, digging the country’s and various states’ debt holes that much deeper. The establishment press has paid very little attention to fiscal 2009’s drop of 19.5% in receipts from economic activity, so I expect similar treatment of October’s continuation of the trend. It would appear that they don’t want any unsettling news getting in the way of the statist agenda.

POPSDear Jon Stewart - Please Change Your Name Back to Leibowitz This is a great opinion piece! If you read the whole article, you'll even get a nod to Michael Jackson and the author's affirmation of the importance of making our external image line up with our internal self-identity. Our bigotry as a society will subside only when those of us who don't subscribe in one way or another to the majority have the courage to be ourselves. This is fundamental to queer theory, diversity, and multi-culturalism...but the costs of facing social ostracization are steep. Be brave everyone! The world needs to be a place where individuals can be themselves at every level!

POPSEconomic Stimulus: Bush Fan Stuff is Flying Off the Shelves “OK, Obama goes to a big international summit in Sydney, says ‘Sorry, I don’t speak Australian.’” “I don’t get it. Australians speak English. Sort of.” “Never mind. One more. OK … blah blah blah, Economic Stimulus Plan, blah blah blah House Republicans … and then Obama says, ‘Why don’t you just get some new marching orders from Rush Limbaugh!?!’” “Ha ha ha! Comedy gold! … Hey, we could make Rush Limbaugh cookies!” Bummer the Bush bash biz is falling off, though the article goes on to say Bush fan stuff is flying off the shelves, so that’s something.

POPSBanks Get Into the Unemployment Biz Ye gods, do their little tick-tock minds ever quit? And why are we privatizing social programs? And why are our state legislators permitting the banks to abuse the unemployed through inquiry and withdrawal fees? More below: "For now, those without jobs who are trying to stretch every dollar from unemployment insurance are finding the banks eager to nibble away at even those modest sums."

POPSBarry's Copa is No More The Copa Cabana was legendary to many people, especially those of us in show business. Even when I left the business due to illness at the age of 35, one of my greatest sadnesses was that I never had the chance to play the Copa. I have little doubt the name Copa Cabana will find its permanent mark in show business and music history.

POPSThe goal of twitter's new home page... The quote above is from @biz. I just don't see this being twitter's problem. i can't imagine a simpler, more straightforward service than twitter. I genuinely believe that people who don't use twitter don't use it because they're not interested in what it does...not because they don't understand what it does.
