Manufacturing universes in a fractal multiverse
    wildcat
    by wildcat  6-20-2009    2
It goes without saying that this is one of the most fascinating subjects ever. Of course we need first re-define what exactly it is that we mean when using the term universe/multiverse. a recommended read.

    Unconditional love in the brain?
    wildcat
    by wildcat  4-8-2009    2
Of course we must agree first on what " unconditional" means, but it seems that neuroscientists lately have decided somehow to conquer the territory traditionally reserved for philosophers. As I see it, it is high time for serious philosophers to reclaim their place. Unconditionality is not a neurological term and thus to my eyes is meaningless in this particular context. I definitely agree with the writers of brainethics, this is the kind of science one should be skeptical of.

Synthetic biology yields clues to evolution and the origin of life
    wildcat
    by wildcat  2-16-2009
The first forms of life did not evolve in the usual sense, he said, but simply grew. "Evolution began when large populations of cells had variations that led to different metabolic efficiencies," Deamer said. "If the populations were in a confined environment, at some point they would begin to compete for limited resources."

    The way the brain buys
    wildcat
    by wildcat  12-28-2008
Scientists used to assume that emotion and rationality were opposed to each other, but Antonio Damasio, now professor of neuroscience at the University of Southern California, has found that people who lose the ability to perceive or experience emotions as the result of a brain injury find it hard or impossible to make any decisions at all. They can’t shop. ergo we shop with our hearts..;-)

The message is clear: the choices we make now will converge to create a near and distant future that will be almost unbelievably wonderful or unimaginably catastrophic, or both. This knowledgeable, fascinating glimpse into the future is a must read for everyone interested in technology, upcoming innovations in business, science fiction, and the future.

Please Help Scientists By Participating In National Orgasm Day July 31st
    wildcat
    by wildcat  7-30-2008    3
So, Britain, privatize your National Health Services and cut the welfare - tell those people in Manchester the steel industry is never coming back so they should get other jobs. Then you could put money toward science studies that really count, like this. After all, this is not a gender-specific issue. Having British women famous for lack of orgasms really doesn't make the men there look all that great either.

    According to Popper

    by wildcat  6-24-2008    4
According to Popper, a science without limits or imperfections or fixable flaws isn't science: it's metaphysics. In this sense, the end goal of science - the construction of a perfect mirror to reality - isn't just unrealistic: it's also unscientific.
