George Will Is A Fatuous Fool

 1. What conservatism professes is at loggerheads with what conservatism DOES: over-reach domestically and abroad, restrict freedom as much as possible while extending license to the wealthy to do as they please, and foster un-realism, ignorance, and superstition. 2. Western political philosophy is *not" "generally" concerned with the tension between freedom and equality--that's junior high level rubbish.

A Peevish Sniff from the Olympus of Analytic Philosophy
wcr111
by wcr111  5-30-2007
I largely agree with his point; folks don't know what philosophy is. However, he then promptly;y goes off the rails, conflating the alienation of philosophy from the other humanities with the lack of interest in the technical and problem-based thinking that is characteristic of philosophy only within the last 120 years.

Perlstein highlights the irony: conservatives only like some markets, and some businesses, and their criterion for choosing seems to be a preference for those who already have wealth and power.

This is strikingly parallel to the dynamic between (dominant) analytic philosophers and (heterodox) continental philosophers.

Economistic Time and Other Fictions
wcr111
by wcr111  5-29-2007
These assumptions embed other assumptions about the homogeneity of time, labor, and commodities because those are the founding assumptions of economics--and of capitalism. That doesn't make them right--they're insane ways of thinking--but it does make them rather inescabable.

Exactly the Wrong Response to Caplan
wcr111
by wcr111  5-27-2007
I absolutely agree that there is a difference between economic rationality and something like good judgment, but child labor and minimum wage laws (and every other real check on the market) come not from the better angels of our natures, but from the stubborn struggle of the workers, and the fear of that struggle among the decision-making elites. The moralistic rejoinder to free market ideologues is liberal in the bad sense--fuzzy headed wishful thinking.
