Bush gagged Surgeon General. Health, sex, smoking, cells, religion,
    righthand
    by righthand  7-23-2007    8
Under Bush, the independence of the surgeon general has been placed below industry lobbying and the demands of the religious right. The Bush White House banned Dr Carmona from speaking or issuing reports on stem cells, emergency contraception, sex education, prisons, mental health and international health issues, he has revealed. For years, the White House also tried to "water down" a key report on the dangers of second-hand smoke, he said. When it was published last year , the report stated that even brief exposure to cigarette smoke can cause immediate harm.

    Spam on Clipmarks
    ouyangwulong
    by ouyangwulong  12-21-2007    18
These days I just follow clippers who find me, but for kicks i decided to browse the general clip casts. Disapointingly it was inundated with totaly useless de fact advertising for www.playgames.net. Which appears to have sequentially registered a bunch of dummy names. Not that I'm in favor of censoring content, but is there a way to keep clipmarks non-commercial? It seems like these accounts were set up only to spam us, not to participate in the community or clip the best of the net. What can we do about these kind of virulent users?

How Electric Cars Could Save the Grid
    gingembre
    by gingembre  12-30-2007    5
Benefits of the "Vehicle to Grid" project being developed by researchers at the University of Delaware "electric vehicles could do more than provide backup energy. If just a quarter of the nation's cars were electric -- about 50 million cars -- the power capacity of those batteries would be equal to 700 gigawatts, the entire power production capacity in the United States today" "For the system to have the most value, electric cars need to be equipped with a high, 80-amp/240-volt plug -- something a little more powerful than the plug on an electric dryer. (An electrician can install the corresponding outlet into any home.) But most of the existing electric hybrid cars come equipped with a low, 15-amp, 110-volt plug." "the low-amp plugs work...but if the electric car owner is selling electricity back to the grid, they want to sell as much as possible. A 15-amp plug could net a car owner about $400 year, whereas an 80-amp plug could net $4,000"

Programmers say the craziest things in their code
    Kore7
    by Kore7  10-14-2006    2
With the new Google Code Search tool suddenly exposing millions of lines of previously obscure code to the public, I decided to try to find the most embarrassing comments possible that are now out in the open for all to see. Even knowing what types of comments developers leave in their code, I was still a bit mortified to find out just what shameful secrets Google has exposed overnight. (And you should see the R-rated examples.) One blogger compared Google Code Search to reading the great "bathroom wall" of programming. Feel dirty? embryo-0.9.0/src/bin/embryo_main.c 3: /* This is ugly code! don't look at it please! i am embarrassed! i need to */ /* cleanit up! */

Don't miss "Top 100 Undiscovered Web Sites (2) " http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/BC3276C6-415C-4797-BAA9-2D35E7764644/ You'll see a large collection of Web applications and tech sites, excellent blogs, offbeat social networks, and, as always, a handful of addictive Flash games for those slow days at work. Some of these sites are completely under the radar and get very little traffic. Others are hugely popular within a specific demographic. But all of them deserve to be in your bookmarks.

I click, therefore I am: Toward outsourcing our identity
    Silkweaver
    by Silkweaver  7-30-2008    5
There are two complementary tendencies on the Net: one which encourages keeping multiple personalities, and the other which tends to gather them in a central personality. For instance, a survey said that most people on Twitter use more than one account and a site lets users create profiles for the different facets of their personality. We can set different email addresses (sometimes called “identities”) in email programs. Other tendencies are toward reunification, as in OpenID, a “way to use a single digital identity across the Internet.” Furthermore, many social sites we could be part of, like BlogCatalog and MyBloglog will show the identity we choose to when we visit blogs, leaving a trace of our path.
