With their teachers now coming out against terrorism, will the Taliban in Pakistan or Afghanistan follow suit? Madani is unsure. But he wants senior clerics from the eight member states of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to come together to debate whether to endorse the Deobandi decree. "I don’t know what will say," Madani said. "But my intention is that this issue must be debated. I am trying to bring together the ulema and muftis from all SAARC countries in India. Then I will request them to endorse this decree."

This story is not that unusual but it struck me as a good example of how the innocent get killed so needlessly. The Mohmand Rifles were unsure of who had fired on them so they started shelling the suspected area and wind up killing a 10 year old girl and injuring 3 others. Why? What did that accomplish for them?

Similarly, the militants were using it as an easy route to the adjoining Mohmand Agency via Ambar and Sarlara areas.Maulvi Omar, a spokesman for Baitullah Mahsud-led banned TTP, had once remarked that they would die but never allow Loisam to fall to the troops.

Angry Pakistani tribesmen attack Taliban after bombing
    tommy2balmy
    by tommy2balmy  10-11-2008
Militants have unleashed a new wave of violence in Pakistan in recent months after the military launched major offensives against them in the rugged northwest including Bajaur and Swat regions. The mounting militant threat prompted the government to convene a closed joint session of the two-chambered parliament for a briefing by intelligence officials on internal security. The parliamentarians are due to begin debate on the situation after Pakistan's newly appointed intelligence chief briefed them this week on the militant threat. The growing violence comes amidst a stepped-up campaign by the United States against militant targets inside Pakistan

Taliban in secret peace talks with Afghan government

    by tommy2balmy  9-29-2008    1
Last week, the French Prime Minister, Franois Fillon, referred indirectly to the talks during a parliamentary debate on Afghanistan. “We must explore ways of separating the international Jihadists from those who are acting more for nationalist or tribal motives. Efforts in this direction are being led by Sunni countries such as Saudi Arabia,î he said. Late last year Karzai said he would welcome the chance to speak directly to Hikmatyar and to Mullah Mohammed Omar, the Taliban’s leader and one of the most wanted men in the world, promising that if the Taliban demanded a ìdepartment in this or in that ministry or a position as deputy ministerî in exchange for ending violence, he would give them the posts. Previously, Taliban spokesmen have said that only the departure of foreign troops, the institution of a fiercely rigorous interpretation of Sharia law and a share of government would be acceptable to them as the basis for any deal.

Terrorism is the sword of extremism, whether it is religious, ethnic or regional. Islamic fundamentalism in its present form was nurtured by the absence of democratic rule in the Muslim world; the short-sighted and exploitative terms of engagement employed by the western powers to deal with Muslim majority countries, which included support to dictatorships, monarchies and oppressive rules; economic injustice meted out to the majority of the population in collaboration with comprador local elite and western corporations; and finally the issue of Palestine and the sentiment it broods across the Muslim world.

But the move has raised the ire of some representatives in Congress. They are blocking the payment because they say the money was supposed to go towards counterterror programs. "We are concerned that the administration’s proposal to use military assistance to pay for the F-16 upgrades will divert funds from more effective counterterrorism tools like helicopters, TOW missiles, and night-vision goggles," said Howard Berman and Nita Lowey, heads of two key committees in the House of Representatives, in a July statement.

    by tommy2balmy  9-12-2008    1
no international relief agency (United Nations, Red Cross, etc) is in sight. Some efforts made by the local government have also run aground by rampant corruption and lack of will to acknowledge the plight of these people at the highest government level. Worst of all, neither the Pakistan or American army, whose bombs have displaced thousands of children, women and old men, fail to acknowledge the consequences of their actions. To them the matter is closed and is not worth discussing. Let us write to our senators, congressmen, our national and provincial assembly members, our presidents and prime ministers and ask them one question. “We can authorize billions of dollars for the bombardment of the region, but can we also authorize a few bucks for the betterment of the local people?” I have said it before, and I will repeat again, “No amount of bombing can win the hearts and minds of the disgruntled populace.”
