“I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.” – Martin Luther King in his speech: Beyond Vietnam: A time to break silence

“The United States must understand the importance of an independent judiciary, and that one democracy cannot tell another how to administer its legal system. We sincerely hope Foreign Secretary David Miliband’s fears are misplaced or, if not, that Secretary Clinton will see sense and withdraw this shocking threat to ordinary British people,” she added. Wake up, UK. As Henry Kissinger once stated, "the US has no friends, only interests."

Congress Objects to CIA Lies But Not Torture and Murder?
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  7-16-2009
So what do you call a country if not a "tyranny" when its top officials dispatch their henchmen around the world to murder their enemies? That’s how the Soviet Union’s Joe Stalin worked. "No man, no problem." Stalin was no believer in respecting the sovereignty of other countries or bothering with their courts. Just go in and kill the guy. Apparently, Cheney worked the same way. And like Stalin, he authorized torture. This totalitarian streak runs deep both in the White House and CIA. The U.S. had been involved in the assassination or attempted assassination of 37 world leaders and more than 50 U.S. foreign interventions, mostly by the CIA, ranging from blackmail to armed overthrow. Blum also cites evidence of CIA meddling in 30 foreign elections. The crimes of our presidents and the CIA today represent everything America’s Founders despised.

The Suppressed Fact: Deaths by U.S. Torture
    thisnamecantbetaken
    by thisnamecantbetaken  6-30-2009    2
The record could not be clearer regarding the fact that we caused numerous detainee deaths, many of which have gone completely uninvestigated and thus unpunished. Instead, the media and political class have misleadingly caused the debate to consist of the myth that these tactics were limited and confined. We should never, as a policy, maltreat people under our control, detainees. We tortured people unmercifully. We probably murdered dozens of them during the course of that, both the armed forces and the C.I.A.

Former President Carter wrote that the Red Cross, Amnesty International and the Pentagon “have gathered substantial testimony of torture of children, confirmed by soldiers who witnessed or participated in the abuse.” UNICEF was “profoundly disturbed” by reports of abuse of children in Iraq prisons. “Any mistreatment, sexual abuse, exploitation or torture of children in detention is a violation of international law,” UNICEF spokesman Damien Peronnaz said. Not surprisingly, “One of the biggest complaints (by Iraqis) is that the vast majority of (U.S.) detainees have not been charged with any crime,”

      1. Purpose. This SOP document promulgates procedures to be followed by I I P-GTMO personnel engaged in interrogation operations on detained persons. The premise behind this is that the interrogation tactics used at U.S. military SERE schools are appropriate for use in real-world interrogations. These tactics and techniques are used at SERE school to “break” SERE detainees. The same tactics and techniques can be used to break real detainees during interrogation operations. 2. Training. All interrogators will undergo training by certified SERE instructors prior to being approved for use of any of the techniques described in this document. Scope. Applicable to military and civilian interrogators assigned to JTF-GTMO, Cuba. Guantanamo Abu Ghraib

I couldn't care less who wins the elections. Looking at both candidates, it seems America isn't the least bit interested in real change. Is anyone asking the candidates about what they are going to do about the US' slow but steady slide into fascism? Or about limiting presidential power? Or about banning torture? Or about the return of Habeus Corpus? Or about extraordinary renditions and secret prisons? Or about preemptive aggression? Or about making your war criminals pay for their crimes? Hmm? Anyone? No. No. Let's just keep it entertaining, low key and unsubstantial. Let's talk about lipstick! Yeah! Blacks vs whites, Democrats vs Republicans, pro-life vs pro-choice, Christians vs atheists blah blah blah... "Divide and conquer!". The power elite working behind the scenes have that pat down and the US citizenry is blissfully (perhaps willingly) oblivious... *shaking my head in disbelief* Oops! No time to comment any more! Zoos in Canada only have regulations for native animals such as bears or coyotes. Keepers have no rules for exotic animals, including lions, tigers or kangaroos. "McElroy was brought to court for her manner with native animals and unfortunately it has nothing to do with Tyson's well-being," she said.

The Pleasure of Finding Things Out

    by thisnamecantbetaken  11-24-2007    2
I would see people building a bridge and I would say ‘they don’t understand’. I really believed that it was senseless to make anything because it would be destroyed very soon anyway, but they didn’t understand that and I had this very strange view of any construction that I would see, I would always think how foolish they are trying to make something. So I was really in a kind of depressive condition. I think a lot of troops coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan will have PTSD or depression, not just because of the dangers of combat, but perhaps also because of terrible things they have done, or witnessed others do. (Torture, abuse, rape etc) It's imperative we fight wars with as high a degree of dignity and respect for human life as possible, not just for the sake of our enemies and civilians caught up in the crossfire, but also for the long term sake and health of our own too. Guilt is a terrible thing to live with. Speak out against torture.

Bush said he wouldn't discuss the techniques of torture because he doesn't want the enemy to adjust... Adjust?? How exactly do you adjust to waterboarding? To being hung in chains from the ceiling for hours and days on end? How do you adjust to sleep deprivation? Or sensory deprivation? Or being beaten with cables? Or hypothermia? Or murder? How exactly do you adjust Mr Bush? You are so FULL OF IT. As for the use of secret prisons, (which are against ALL common decency, not to mention International Law) Bush replies: "Yeah, so what?" Yeah, perhaps you're right Bush. By accepting torture and secret prisons, USA has sunken to such depths of moral depravity and stench, that the only way is up anyway... so who cares? Can't you come up with some other horrors and atrocities? Waterboarding is getting a little old, don't you think? How about some pulling of fingernails or hot irons? Or being eaten alive by ants! Be creative, Sir! Hmm... do they have ants in Afghanistan?
