POPSEstonia: The Singing Revolution
The Revolution started in the summer of 1987 In the June evenings of that year over 10,000 people a night packed the Lauluväljak (The Tallinn Song Festival Grounds), where they sang patriotic and national songs forbidden by the Soviet regime. In September of 1988, 300,000 Estonians gathered at the Lauluvaljak to continue their protest and to hear Trivimi Velliste make the first public demand for independence. Meanwhile, similar calls for freedom were being made by Estonia’s Baltic neighbours, Lithuania and Latvia, whilst in Berlin students were calling for the fall of the Berlin Wall. On 20th August 1991 Estonian politicians declared the nation’s independence even as Soviet tanks were rolling through the countryside to quell the movement. However, the bid was successful, and several key events mark the following days: August 21 - Latvia declares independence. August 22 - Iceland is the first country to recognize the independent Baltic states. August 23 - Lenin's statue

POPSThe story of Sartre and de Beauvoir as never told before If this couple expected their arrangement would spare them the trials and heartache of a conventional marriage, they were wrong.Their multiple affairs went on until World War II when Sartre was called up and their sex games had to be conducted through letters.Left behind in Paris, Simone continued to seduce both men and women, writing titillating descriptions of her activities to Sartre behind the Maginot Line, which reveal her heartlessness and the vulnerability of her conquests.Tragically, the lives of these girls, who were pathologically jealous of each other over their teacher's attentions, were permanently blighted. One took to self-harming, another committed suicide. Most remained pathetically unfulfilled and dependent on the childless Simone, who perversely referred to them as her 'family'. ... Sartre had always said the best way to learn about a country was to sleep with its women.

POPSSlavery Ended Up ; Amazing Change for 18 years William Wilberforce failed to bring his uncommon ideas to 'renew society' and was defeated time after time in the House of commons & in the British Parliament with his aim to abolish slave trade. He died three days after the act was passed giving freedom to all slaves in the British empire.

POPSEnough for one day.... ..... the more I see the harder it becomes to call myself a citizen of this country. We've lost our character, our Constitution and are now just a blink away from losing my freedom to the freaks that control our very destiny. I wrote a song a few years back called "I',m Done Now" but never recorded it save a cheapo cassette tape. I think it may just be time to get that one and a few more like it out there before they come after me.

POPSPersepolis I went to see this at the cinema last night. And I absolutely loved it. It's political. It's critical. It's naive. It's full of wisdom. It's funny. It's sad. Its message is simple. Its message is deep. Just wonderful!

POPSNietzsche: Jesus versus Christianity Nietzsche's 'The Anti-Christ', available online, is a powerful repudiation of the bourgeoise spiritual sterility of much of practised Christian religion. He writes too of his admiration for the original Jesus, and of Buddha.

POPSGirls and Women Women of Iraq have gradually let go of most of their 20th century gains and privileges in the last 4 years of occupation. Iraq turned from a modern country of educated and working women into a divided land of Islamic and ethnic warlords who compete in canceling women from the social realm........Read more Islamic Sharia law: a constant threat against the rights and freedom of women in the Middle East

POPSBush talks of Cuban Life after Castro Bush's speech rings hollow. Perhaps he thinks it's time for with war with Cuba. The Way History has proven Castro's 'Staying power'- He seems to be the last of a generation of leaders, that had control of international politics that ended in about 1980, perhaps with the exception of Yasser Arafat. Could be the tropical weather, and the threat of a cigar embargo. Castro is likely to outlive Bush.

POPSTwirling in red silk from a tree in Istanbul Van Nguyen came to Italy with her parents, refugee boat people from Vietnam. She was only a year old then.... They didn't make it on to one of the US planes so they fled in a small crowded dinghy... they were the few lucky ones... they were fished out of the sea in time by an Italian ship passing through those waters in South-east Asia... I met her in Trieste while she was a student at the School of Interpretors... Typical restlessness of the eternal migrant.... Mutant hybrids.... we cant stay put...

POPSHafiz 2 - Quotes i have collected 9 selected Hafiz poems in 3 clips from the book "The Gift" 4 wit, wisdom & 4 your joy .. ;-) This deliriously enchanting collection of 250 poems is one of the best books of 1999. Hafiz (1320-1389), according to Daniel Ladinsky (the translator) "We have not come here to take prisoners," writes Hafiz, "but to surrender ever more deeply to freedom and joy." In "Your Mother and My Mother," the poet writes: "Fear is the cheapest room in the house. / I would like to see you living / In better conditions."

POPSDemocracy manipulated by America I give credit to Ratilfar for finding this piece. We need more people to see the truth. Or one day we will be the people on the steps of our church being gunned down. Or randomly shot in the head by Government trained snipers.
